  1. I'm giggling about how tweaked Riders fans are going to be about this... "THEY ONLY PLAY TEAMS THAT ARE FULL OF INJURIES!!11!!"

  2. A few moments from 1953 - the year that "The House that Jack Built" opened In July, the Bombers brought in Tommy Thompson to be the backfield coach. Thompson played QB in the NFL (1940-1950) and guided the Philadelphia Eagles to championships in '48 & '49. Speculation was that Thompson was really in town to play QB. When training camp opened, Thompson was in full gear. He impressed enough that he was the opening day QB for Winnipeg. He would start 3 games total. At 35 years old & blind in one eye, Thompson was unable to play defence. Teams could dress 8 imports (all starters) so If he wasn't starting at QB, he wasn't dressing for the game. On October 1, Thompson was released as a player and he left town. Jack Jacobs was in the doghouse of Coach George Trafton for most of the season. In this era, it was a 10 yard penalty for "Coaching from the sidelines" if there was any communication from the bench to players on the field. It was up to the QB to call his own plays. The problem - Jack Jacobs had an obvious tell. Edmonton figured it out in 1952 and by 1953 every other team was aware too. If Jacobs called a pass, he had the offence in a spread formation. If he called a run, the offence was in a bunch formation. The linebackers would adjust based on the formation. Trafton tried to get Jacobs to mix things up so it wasn't obvious what the play call was but Jacobs wasn't able to oblige. With 3 games to go in the regular season, Trafton benched Jacobs and replaced him with Joe Zaleski. Heading into the playoffs, Jacobs was relegated to 3rd string QB behind Joe Zaleski & Geoff Crain. In the first game of the semi-final, Lorne "Boom Boom" Benson gained 163 yards on 23 carries including a playoff record 6 rushing TDs. On defence, the Bombers intercepted 8 passes. Bud Grant set a playoff record with 5 picks - the others went to Jack Jacobs, Tom Casey & Neill Armstrong. In game 1 of the west final, Jack Jacobs replaced Joe Zaleski at QB for the 2nd half of the game. Zaleski remained in the game at flying wing because Trafton wanted him to call the plays for Jacobs - that didn't work too well. All told, Zaleski started 9 games in a row leading up to the Grey Cup. Jack Jacobs was given the start for the Grey Cup game.

  3. Bomber D-Line vs Elks O-Line. Harris knew what was coming, so he escaped the pressure really, really early.

  5. As an OSU fan I have watched a fair bit of Taylor Cornelius, and even watched him in the XFL because he was OSU alumni. Here is the skinny based on what I have seen. Strong arm and can really zing it. Accuracy a big time issue on anything outside the tackles. He will look to make hay in the middle and seams. BIG, and strong, and actually really mobile. Not an easy sack at all and a surprisingly effective runner. The Bombers DL need to wrap up on this guy. Interception prone as he telegraphs some passes but gets away with it a lot more than he should because of his arm strength. When he's in a rhythm he can be very good, when he's bad...he's really bad. Bombers need to force him to make throws outside the hashmarks and not escaping the pocket by breaking tackles. That's my 2 cents based on what I've seen.

  7. WINNIPEG SURGING This week, the Bombers head to Edmonton looking to improve to 6-1 on the season – a feat they have not achieved since 2011 when they started the season 7-1 and reached the Grey Cup. Prior to that, they reached the mark in 1984 when they won the Grey Cup. This season, Winnipeg has scored the most points (136) and allowed the fewest points (76) for a +60-point differential. Winnipeg leads the league in several key categories so far this season: Points allowed (12.7 per game) Touchdowns scored (16) Touchdowns allowed (6) Turnover ratio (+12) 2-and-outs forced (32) Turnovers forced (17) 30+ yard completions (12) Lowest passing efficiently (73.7) 12.7 points allowed per game is the fewest since 1966 (Ottawa with 12.6). Winnipeg’s team record was set in 1958 (11.4) during a season in which they finished 13-3. In the fourth quarter this year, the Bombers have allowed a total of three points. Bombers receiver Kenny Lawler leads the league with 15-second down-conversion receptions, accounting for 47 per cent of his catches. Zach Collaros is tied for the league-lead with nine touchdown passes. Mike Miller has had multiple special teams tackles in each game this year and stands at a total of 15 to lead the league. Jackson Jeffcoat is tied for the league lead with five sacks and leads the league with four forced fumbles. https://www.cfl.ca/2021/09/16/cfl-ca-game-notes-look-week-7-4/

  8. Yeah, injuries are a part of that football. How many more Grey Cups would the Bombers have if Dunigan and Glenn didn't get injured.

  9. Almost makes you want to sit Collaros and continue clown-pounding the league with McGuire.

  12. TSN: How much involvement will Khari Jones have during Bombers game? https://www.tsn.ca/CFL/video/how-much-involvement-will-khari-jones-have-during-bombers-game~2281948 I am hoping no involvement. That would be really weird. Who is with me?

  13. Speaking of Arland Bruce, one my my favourite memories was a game vs. The stamps where they got behind and everyone headed for the exits only for khari and Bruce to connect a few times for the comeback and everyone was pressed up against the gates trying to see what they walked out on.

Manitoba is not even close to being out of the woods, yes we have vaccinated for the most part and restricted where the non vaccinated can go but we have our share of incompetence and stupidity here

  20. Ummm has fajardo not started every game for the riders thus far ( Bombers kicked his ass twice in a row by the way) Harris has been in the whole time for the elks up til now... so why is it just an excuse now that the Bombers record is better than everyone else's? I will say this, the narrative that the Bombers are just lucky with injuries is crap. Our team has depth. Full stop. That is why it doesn't appear injuries have impacted them. Get a GM that does his job and you can replace guys lost to injury. Kyle walters is the hardest working most proactive Gm in the cfl. Change my mind.

  22. More hard hitting analysis from Canada's backwater. "If their starting qb goes down they're not as good" Thanks, Blair. great work out there. Low level hack

  23. So basically, Bombers need to employ the same strategy they used on Fajardo. Collapse the pocket, stop the run and make him throw.

  24. I honestly prefer it this way. In 2019 all you heard about was the Hamilton juggernaut and how it was on track to be an all-time great champion. Even after we pummelled them in the Grey Cup, the talk at the start of this year was not the returning champs, but the redemption tour for “team 14-0”. The more we fly under the radar, the better IMO. Seen too many defending champs pull off an underdog win, carry that win to a dominating regular season where they suddenly play up to the level of their championship win, get praise heaped on them as being the new power, and then get taken down in the playoffs (think St. Louis Blues). If TSN wants to try to convince viewers there is still parity this year, let them. Let’s just keep on quietly winning all the way to another Grey Cup, then we can bask in the long overdue accolades. Being the Week 7 champions in the eyes of the media means extremely little to me.

    Covid-19

They seriously need to consider regional measures for places like the Bible Belt in the South. The pandemic is almost 2 years old, vaccines have been administered since December 2020(!) and some people still choose to endanger others. Time to stop coddling the fools. If Manitoba can lead on Vaccine Passports, they can lead on this as well.

His whole plan was to be premier in Albert's when oil and gas rebounded and take over as leader of the cpc when they blew another election and be prime Minister. He is ambitious, but thankfully he has failed so spectacularly in Alberta his government career should be over.

  39. The scoring stats don't mean much since we've played 6 games (and Calg) and every other team has only played 4 or 5... however, that makes the defensive stats even more impressive...

  42. June 21, 1984. B.C. Sucks Lions play the Blue at Winnipeg Stadium. We hated B.C. then. Huge thunder, lightning, and rain storm delays the game. On the east side under the stands a foot of water has people slogging to the beer lines during the delay. Beers get completely sold out. Game restarts and the sidelines are still covered in water to about 10 yards onto the field. B. C. Receiver gives up misses a throw because he didn’t want to get his feet wet near the sideline. The place was nuts. Next seasons season ticket motto was something like “Feel the Thunder”!
