TORONTO — The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced on Monday that it will mark Canada’s 150th birthday with special #CFLGameDay pageantry at Week 2 games across the country.

The CFL is tied to Canada as the only professional sports League that is uniquely Canadian. This year’s CFL brand campaign #BringItIn is a nod to the Canadian values that have come to define the CFL through its diversity, inclusiveness and equality.

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday the CFL will be adding special Canadian visuals to each game being played in Week 2, sharing the stories of Canadians who have impacted the League and kicking off 150 tweets leading up to the nation’s biggest game – the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw.

All host stadiums – McMahon Stadium in Calgary, BMO Field in Toronto, The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton and Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan – will have special CFL-branded #Canada150 field paintings to commemorate the country’s sesquicentennial.

Each game will also feature a specially-made custom Wilson game ball with a CFL Canada 150 logo and red laces (instead of the traditional white laces) to be used for pre-game warmups and during the opening kickoff as well as kickoff for the second half of each game.

Other elements to be incorporated:

HELMET DECALS: the CFL has distributed specially-designed Canada 150 helmet decals to all teams to be worn on helmets all year long.

SPECIAL SIDELINE APPAREL: the CFL has unveiled custom “Legendary Canadian” t-shirts to all teams that feature a notable Canadian player (selected by individual teams) to be worn on the sidelines for non-playing personnel as well as during interviews and/or day before walkthroughs.

CFL.ca will publish digital profile pieces on each player and of those wearing these iconic “Legendary Canadian” shirts to share their stories and impressions of Canada, as well as their hopes for the future of our country and our league. Stories will be published online on Tuesday June 27.

The featured Canadian players include:

Montreal: Peter Dalla Riva

Ottawa: Bill Hatanaka

Hamilton: Rocky DiPietro

Toronto: Pinball Clemons

Winnipeg: Chris Walby, Doug Brown

Calgary: Sugarfoot Anderson

Edmonton: Normie Kwong, Don Getty

Saskatchewan: George Reed

BC: Lui Passaglia

REFEREE UNIFORMS: referees for all four Canada Day weekend contests will wear special jerseys bearing red stripes and the Canada 150 logo.

IN-STADIUM PROMOTION: home teams will show a revised CFL #BringItIn brand spot with a Canada 150 animation end slate to be featured in-game at all Week 2 home games.

150 CFL MOMENTS/TWEETS: Follow @CFL for 150 days beginning July 1st to discover some of the League’s top moments, rare facts and photos from our rich history in this country.

Week 2 games occurring over the Canada Day long weekend include:

  • Thursday, June 29th: Ottawa REDBLACKS at Calgary Stampeders, 9:00pm ET
  • Friday, June 30th: BC Lions at Toronto Argonauts, 7:00pm ET
  • Friday, June 30th: Montreal Alouettes at Edmonton Eskimos, 10:00pm ET
  • Saturday, July 1st: Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders, 9:00pm ET

The game between Winnipeg and Saskatchewan on July 1st will be a central celebration of Canada 150, as well as of the opening of Mosaic Stadium, with additional ceremonies and performances to memorialize the occasion.

While many special festivities are planned for the Canada Day weekend and Week 2 games, the CFL will continue to honour Canada 150’s history throughout 2017, culminating at the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw, which will take place at TD Place in Ottawa on Sunday November 26th, 2017.

Fans can purchase tickets to all Week 2 games and join the celebration at CFL.ca/tickets.

Reynolds - on July 1 halftime show
"Its going to be large scale...there is going to be over 200 people involved."

?‍? There is no further word if this show involves the Riders practice players or not...

And another 300 hidden away in safe houses "just in case"

You know given that this is the rider fan base I am legitimately concerned that it's actually going to be a real circle jerk in the middle of the field.

They'd only be screwing themselves.

Pinball became a Canadian in 2015 apparently... kind of a stretch to call him one of the CFL's "Great Canadians" if he was an American until years after his playing career ended.  Find it hard to believe Toronto has never had any great Canadians. Mike O'Shea? The guy that broke Kevin Glenn's arm?

That special football is awesome, but man are those referee uniforms hideous.

Take a moment, sit back and realize that someone was paid to design those uniforms. Now take a moment to realize that his/her superior (who is likely getting paid MORE) was like "Yep, that looks great!"

On an interesting side-note, it will make them blend right in with the Stamps / Redblacks colors... when we said the best reffed football games were ones where you didn't see/notice the refs, that isn't what we meant!

Has anyone else picked up on how much of an honour this is for both teams, to take the field on the 150th anniversary of the birth of the country we all love? Regardless of what we may think of the Riders and their fans, the rivalry has been a great feature of the game and the (mostly) genial sniping between both provinces. This is truly a once in a lifetime event and an inauguration of a great new stadium. Nobody close me had better die, because I ain't gonna miss this.

To be honest fellas. I WAS about to say that the refs uni's were a refreshing change. I WAS going to say, they were nice. Oops.

Any one know where a bomber blue camo jersey can be bought? I think it would be good customized with "Kelly", "Reinboldt" or "Mack" on it.

I don't mind them. Something unique for Canada Day. Red and black goes well together. And they could be much worse.
