  1. well this is a crock of ****. Bailey has had a fire lit in him since the first game he ever played (Banjo Bowl 2019) and likely goes back way farther than that. He's also been very consistent for a long time...he just doesn't get targeted as much as others.

  5. Right out of the Trump playbook. Predictable and embarrassing as a Canadian and world citizen. Here’s hoping this lazy unoriginal mother f’er and his band of morons, dweebs have completely misjudged (not in their favour) how well this approach will work with Canadians across this fine country of ours.

  7. Isn’t that the whole point of an anthem any way? I wish more areas of each country had their own ritual like that for their anthem. It adds to tradition doesn’t take away. I won’t get political, some groups in this country have a more American leaning and would rather be poor man’s Americans than Canadians. And down south the anthem is a big deal. It’s incredibly pretentious. I’ve seen terrible stuff happen to people too slow to rise and remove their hats or who had a coughing fit and more. no one has more fun on this roster than yoshi. We are lucky to have a guy like that. It’s one of my greatest hopes for this club that he remains involved with the team after he retires.

  8. It started in appreciation of bringing the Jets back. Something that meant a lot to many people in the city. Alternatively, if people don't want to pay for Jets tickets, then the team will leave again. The mediocre part comes and goes. I suppose long term we will find out if Winnipeg can field a competitive team given the challenges of a smaller market team. Probably need to give a GM a chance outside of Chevy to really find the answer though. I do pay for Jets tickets (mini pack). I don't participate in the True North chant. Don't begrudge those that do.

  9. That's the thing with shallow populist ideas, they don't actually have to have a plan. Shout "Justinflation!" or "Freedom" over and over until the rubes are frothing at the mouth. The goal isn't to deliver anything, it's to claim power.

  10. Bailey amongst his teammates: 2nd in targets (4th TPG), 3rd in receptions (4th RPG), 5th in yards (6th YPG), 7th in avg. yards per catch, 3rd in TDs. His numbers are down on average from his last two seasons (about 0.5 targets, 1 catch, and 15 yards per game), so it is fair to say he has underperformed statistically this year. And all of those numbers for this year were buoyed by the last game, his best of the year. So saying he hasn’t performed well is in fact an opinion up for debate and can be bolstered by certain numbers, just as the eye test of other factors such as blocking and character and effort can be pointed out in favour of the opinion that he is playing well. But to say “he isn’t playing well is not an opinion it’s just wrong” is inaccurate, and calling it “a crock of s*it” and insulting other posters by saying they should feel bad for having a differing “wrong” opinion is unnecessary. Maybe we can strive for more civilized debate around here, seems there has been a lot more mud-slinging , bad language, and general mean-spiritedness in posts in the past few weeks IMO (maybe back-to-backs with the Riders and all the vitriol spewed about them, their players, coaches, and their fan base has carried over). Let’s all try to be as classy as we say this Bomber team is, and not be as low class as we say the Riders are, can we? Anyway, here is a picture of a puppy and a bunny to hopefully make everyone more pleasant.

  12. Opinions don't mean you get to say whatever you want and have it not be questioned. For some examples: "I like vanilla better than chocolate" that's an opinion and they is valid no matter what anyone else thinks. "In my opinion the earth is flat not a globe" is not an opinion and is just wrong. Similarly thinking Bailey isn't playing well isn't an opinion it's just wrong.

  17. So why begrudge someone else for the breaks they get? Jets generate a lot of revenue for the city in terms of tourism and rise the international profile of the city. Are you personally hard done by because they get some tax relief?

  18. Without huge tax breaks and gifted lottery revenue, these extremely wealthy people would not have returned the team to Winnipeg. The city and province are expected to provide True North Sports & Entertainment with $13.4 million worth of subsidies in 2015, according to city budget documents, as well as the terms of the revenue-sharing deal struck between the province and the Shark Club, True North’s gaming centre at Cityplace mall. The largest government-enabled source of cash for the Winnipeg Jets is a $6.79-million projected rebate of the 10 per cent city tax levied on events held at the MTS Centre. This refund is up $390,000 from 2015, thanks to increased revenue projections for the arena in 2016. True North is also in line to receive a city business-tax refund worth $232,000 as well as a break on city and provincial property taxes expected in the vicinity of $890,000. For tax-portioning purposes, provincial legislation allows the MTS Centre to be treated as recreational space, as opposed to commercial land. True North is also expected to receive an estimated $5.49 million worth of revenue from 140 gaming machines at the Shark Club. Under the terms of the deal between True North and Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, if the Shark Club generates less than $6.1 million a year in gaming revenue, True North gets to keep 90 per cent of the house, which works out to a maximum of $5.49 million. If the revenue is somewhere between $6.1 million and $7.3 million, True North receives a flat payout of $5.5 million. And if the machines generate more than $7.3 million, True North gets to keep 75 per cent of that first $7.3 million — $5.48 million — plus 20 per cent of any revenue beyond $7.3-million. Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries takes the rest of the cash under all three scenarios. David Thomson, the 3rd Baron Thomson of Fleet, is a Canadian businessman, media magnate, art collector who has a net worth of $50 billion. David Thomson is the Chairman of the Thomson Reuters corporation and his family is the richest in Canada.

  20. I hate the True North chant. Don't understand why so many people are shouting support for extremely wealthy people who are taking their hard-earned money to watch a very mediocre hockey team. Gets even worse when you hear it at your kids' science fair awards.

  21. The other thing about “true north”, when in another city and another teams arena or stadium, it’s pretty darn cool to hear the volume of “true north”, indicating friendlies in the venue.

    NHL Owner Subsidies

It is not your money. And why would you get a say as to whether he should stay or leave? You can choose whether or not you pay to support the Jets. You can choose who you elect who makes the decisions to provide subsidies or not. There is no reason for him to keep a team here when it loses money and doesn't get similar tax advantages that other cities will offer. Again, it comes down to what a majority of people want in a democratic society.
    3 points
  26. Its fine to say you want more out of a player but I think you need to acknowledge the roles and responsibilities of the player. Bailey is playing a role, doing his job. I wish they all got a TD and 100 yards per game. That would make for an exciting season.

  28. As you said it is not a simple question to answer and even that report doesn't come close to painting the full picture. True North does get a tax refund from the tax charged on tickets (along with gaming revenue and tax breaks on the arena), but there is no guarantee that money would be going to the city if the Jets weren't there. The downtown is dying with many abandoned buildings. Would there be tax revenue on the block of real estate without the Jets there? Hard to say, but I suspect things are only going to continue to get worse for downtown with hybrid work models. The majority of cities now a days will give tax breaks to professional sports teams. It is a reality of todays sports climate. If enough people support it, it will continue. If enough people are against it, the team will leave. Pretty sure the Jets don't make a lot of profit on their balance sheet year to year with the economic realities of having the team in Winnipeg. You aren't really subsidizing rich peoples pockets with more money, you are subsidizing to keep the NHL entertainment in the city. Owners make money as the value of the franchise rises. They will pay taxes on that if / when they sell.

The RCMP cruiser *should* have a dash cam video but legally they can't release this to the public. Phillips would have a much stronger case if he had his own dash cam video and or had taken a cell phone video of his own. Because if he has no proof then it sure would look like someone using the race card to try to get out of trouble.

  37. Why do we have national anthems anyway? It's probably a throwback to the two World Wars when we were actually fighting for something. Today, it's just too political. Look at how things went with the Star Spangled Banner in the US. What a **** show that became. If it was up to me, I'd ban O Canada entirely. Dickenson has to go. I think he knows that even with a crossover he's done. And he should be. Lousy coach. Too many excuses for everything. The discipline issues continue. The Riders just won't stop. That on the HC.

(Following the last wave of surrendering from Kharkiv, Monday morning) Also, Putin has retreated to his bunker in Sochi! Slava Ukraini! 41. Didn’t we co-opt the “glorious and BLUE” chant from the Riders, who said “glorious and GREEN”? (Which at least sounds like “glorious and free”). I always thought the BLUE yell made more sense replacing “True” in “True North” plus then we aren’t cheering for the Jets at a Bomber game.

Sounds like the entire campaign is teetering on collapse: The military command of the Russian federation has stopped sending new units into Ukraine following a dramatic Ukrainian counter-offensive that has reshaped the war and left Moscow reeling, the general staff of the armed forces of Ukraine said Monday. “The military command of the Russian federation has suspended the sending of new, already formed units into the territory of Ukraine,” officials said on the general staff Facebook page. “The current situation in the theatre of operations and distrust of the higher command forced a large number of volunteers to categorically refuse the prospect of service in combat conditions,” the statement continued. “The situation is affected by information about the actual number of dead, while losses from private military companies and those mobilised from temporarily occupied territories are not taken into account. The situation worsens due to the general attitude toward their own wounded. In particular, in Russian hospitals, diagnoses and the nature of combat injuries are deliberately simplified and no time is given for rehabilitation in order to quickly return servicemen to the combat zone.” This information could not be corroborated. The Kremlin has yet to respond.
