There is a difference between someone being offended and hate. The Edmonton team nickname is a derogatory term put on a racial group by another racial group to make fun of them. Is everyone here good with team nicknames like spiks, wet-backs, spear-chuckers,etc? The argument seems to be that this is different because our society has used this particular term to identify that racial group for a century due to sheer ignorance. When people become aware of the derogatory nature of the term and still continue to use it for something as meaningless as a team's nickname, then it becomes hateful. You call a buddy "fats" because others do it. He tells you it bothers him. You continue to do so. Are you still his buddy or his bully?

  3. Calling for a blatantly racist name to be changed is not "being offended". It's "doing the right thing...which should have been done 50 years ago"

  4. I put the 2001 loss square at the feet of Dave Ritchie. One hundred per cent his fault. He let his players carry on & mouth off all week & it cost them on GC Sunday. Never should have lost to the Stamps but they trash talked, preened & bad mouthed their way out of winning that game. Meanwhile disrespecting a team with a lot of proud veterans playing for it. I still get angry thinking about it.

  5. For purely selfish reasons, this is my favourite Non Bomber player. Greg Barton. The former Philadelphia Eagle, Detroit Lion, Toronto Argonaut & Portland Storm (World Football League) qb. Not because of anything he did on the field but for what he did for my football playing son nearly 3 decades after Greg retired from pro ball to Portland, Oregon. Over the years, Greg transformed Tyler's throwing style from that of a Tim Tebow long windup with different release points on every throw to a quick, compact & efficient delivery with a constant release point. That took years of practice & patience to accomplish. There was no one in Calgary to teach throwing fundamentals to kids when my son played. Anyone that could wasn't interested in doing so. Therefore, we went down to Portland for Greg's tutelage at least twice a year for about a week at a time for over a decade starting in 2003. Greg passed away a year ago this coming August.

I have no problem with people in 1949 calling the team that name. Not sure why did, but I have no problem with people making ignorant decisions. Once they are no longer ignorant and refuse to fix it, it becomes spiteful. The very fact that they are only doing the right thing because they are going to be forced to do it says a lot about them though. Times change. I can be a get-off-my-lawn person because I don't like change. But I need to change if what I am doing could be insulting to others. I don't think that anyone is insulted because our team is named after an African American boxer. If it is, then it would be a reasonable discussion.

  8. Picking one is an impossible task. Philiion, Sanchez, Ferri, Cox... and that's just from the Montreal teams of the past. Ed Gainey & Nic Marshall are probably at the top of the current hate list - love when Darvin is in their face giving it right back to them.

  12. Yeah, the 2001 Grey Cup stings sure, but my absolute least favorite player, ever? People are forgetting some of the good things he did: 1. He referred to Regina's faithful as "a bunch of banjo-pickin' inbreds", and followed it up by 'apologizing' with "... the vast majority of people in Saskatchewan have no idea how to play the Banjo", you could argue he basically invented the Banjo Bowl, which is awesome. Also this is still funny to me today. 2. He's #6 on all-time playoff scorers as of the 2017 record book (this is the most recent available on CFL's site). 3. He played his entire CFL career with Winnipeg, and stayed here, he was also born in Manitoba (Dauphin). Would you honestly say you hate him more than the litany of terrible kickers our team fielded after him? Alexis Serna, Justin Palardy? DeAngelis? Between his last full year (2007) and now, the Bombers realistically had two stints of good kicking: (1) Hajrullahu's phenomenal rookie year and (2) The current Medlock era. Is he gonna have a statue outside IGF anytime soon? Nope...but worst ever? Don't know about that...

the entire notion of nicknaming a team after an ethnicity or race is just ridiculous and makes no sense. I can't imagine the world where it DID make sense...

Do I want to die by slow strangulation or by lazy piranha? My main takeaway point was that the 2001-2009 GOP administration was a giant shitshow. It's a natural thing to be nostalgic about, because we made it through that shitty time (so long as "we" doesn't include the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who were killed) and because GWB was someone who could actually read from a teleprompter, so he seems like a statesman compared to the 24/7 bedshitting racist uncle we have now. The thing that was really scary to me, as someone who was a brand new immigrant to the USA in 2003, was how the whole ******* country lost its mind after 9/11. 70% of Americans supported the Iraq invasion. America was cheering loudly as it carefully aimed an M-16 at its own wang. The GOP of today -- the heir to Bush's GOP -- is a proto-fascist minority party full of venal mobsters, televangelist crooks, and tiny Goebbels. Their prime directive is to loot the state. It's the USA they're ******* over. The wink at the Uighur genocide shows they don't really care about mass human liquidation, so long as the money is flowing in the right direction, which is basically how the USA has responded to most international genocides that it isn't directly responsible for, so no change there. But I think the damage they've done can be fixed, and I think that they have created energy for a counter-revolution that could do some real good. But I am an optimist.

If Edmonton had changed their name in the 80's, when a group of people decided that Eskimos was now a racist term, then you'd have point, but they've been the Eskimos since 1949. Your putting a 2020 filter on a name that was perfectly fine when it was given to the team. I'm all for it if Edmonton wants to change the name to match today's sensibilities, but I'm against them being forced into it.

  28. I'm offended... OK. I'm offended, you have to change... Nope, just nope. It's the same as My religion says I can't do this... OK.. My religion says you can't do this. Nope, just nope. What it is is blatant censorship that does nothing to change peoples opinions or the way they think. It's just a waste of time, effort, and money to placate some offended folks.

  29. While I agree they are free to say what they want and call themselves what they want, they are not free of consequences. "Major sponsors" are prepared to pull their $ from the Esks. Sticking to your guns may result in a hole in your foot... For the record my understanding is the Inuit et al are not as offended by the team name and actually often embrace the Esks as 'their team'. They just want more engagement and positive representation.

  35. I’m not either, the 01 GC will always live on in infamy and I probably won’t ever get over it. However, he picked fights with Rider fans and coined the Banjo Bowl nickname. That alone removes him from being my least favourite. I’ll have to go with EJ Kuale there. He was awful, committed stupid penalties, tried to justify it and MOS kept him in the lineup. God I didn’t think MOS would make it back then. As far as a favourite is concerned, the obvious ones are Khari, Milt, and Doug Brown. However, my favourites were always Charles Roberts and Mike Sellers. Those were two guys I could never get tired of watching. I wish Roberts had the work ethic and mindset of Milt, he could’ve gone down as the GOAT RB in the CFL if he did.

  39. Historically, that's a tough one... So many douchecanoes from which to choose. But active players? It's an easy one: Simoni Lawrence. I can't stand his cockiness and lame chirping, and so watching him during and after Grey Cup 107 was some of the best schadenfreude I've experienced in ages.

TRUMP CAMPAIGN VOWS TO DEFEND JESUS!!!! Trump campaign vows to defend famous statue of Jesus — that’s located in Brazil. President Donald Trump’s campaign is making a solemn vow to supporters that he will never allow the destruction of iconic statues located in foreign countries. The Daily Beast reports that the Trump campaign over the weekend sent out a new ad featuring a photo of the Cristo Redentor in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro and informed supporters that “WE WILL PROTECT THIS.” The Cristo Redentor is perhaps the most famous landmark in all of Brazil, but apparently no one on the Trump campaign realized that the statue was not located in the United States. (I told you this was going to be crazier and crazier)

  49. Empire means oppression. People conquered & oppressed by another. Offensive. Both England & France conquered vast tracts of land in Canada, South America & Asia. It is a sign of white oppression. Spain & Portugal in South America. Europe was a continent of racists that conquered vast continents with their Empires. White entitlement. White oppression & White settlers. Blue Bombers. Offensive. Named after an aircraft that reigned down terror, death & destruction from the skies onto civilian & military targets below. Snowflakes would demand Winnipeg change it's name. They would say that anything associated with war is offensive. That any team that is named after a war time bomb dropping flying machine should be banned. Roughriders... Offensive. Teddy Roosevelt's Roughriders. He was key in American aggression, expansion & oppression in Panama, Cuba & the Phillipines in the 19thy century. On top of one of his famous sayings. "Walk softly & carry a big stick". He also said that he didn't think that every good Indian was a dead Indian but nine out of 10 were. And that Phillipinos were nothing but Chinese half breeds. How long until the snowflakes demand that Saskatchewan change their name? Stampeders & Cowboys. Offensive. They are racist as they went to war with the First Nations in the US & are a symbol of White Supremacy. Cowboys also treat animals like horses & cattle cruelly. (See Calgary Stampede). How long until Snowflakes demand Calgary & Dallas change their names? So many words. So many words offensive.
