I'm an aboriginal man, and i consider the term eskimo to be in the same vein as calling a Canadian a canuck or an American a yankee. It's more of a nickname that can be used as a slur depending on context. I'm not opposed to changing the name, but i don't feel its necessary.

  5. Above 50% of the Canadian population required to look into it is a ridiculously high standard. For perspective, the highest % for popular vote for a party in a federal election was 56.93% (1917) ... and that was back when things were much more a two-horse race.

  13. You know, maybe I'm just clued out when it comes to the discussion here about changing the name Eskimos. I was never told or taught that Eskimo was a bad word. It was a designation given to people who live in the arctic. Not just in Canada but the US , Northern Europe & Russia. As I see it, it was a name given to people who lived in one of the harshest climates in the world & thrived as a people. Able to live off the land with their own unique culture & language. I always thought Eskimo meant a proud people & heritage. I don't know anyone who considered the word Eskimo as derogatory. Edmonton named their team for the Eskimos as a compliment & acknowledgement of their proud way of life & that is how & everyone else including me has looked at it. It's not a derogatory name like Redskins which should be changed. There are no teams called the Pale Faces. The word Eskimo is supposed to be a proud team name. If the Inuit community overwhelmingly wants a name change, okay then do it & make the change. If they think Eskimo is a derogatory name then who am I to say it isn't? But if all this is is just the work of a few activists in their community being picked up by the Cancel Culture while the majority of Inuit are silent then no, it shouldn't be changed. I say, put it to a vote. If the Inuit community votes for change then change it. That should put an end to this once & for all.

  14. That's not even how we elect our leaders. Do you think Calgary should ask 50% of canadians where their new football stadium is built? Or what the design should look like? I'm guessing you want 50% of america to vote on the new NHL team name in Seattle?

  17. Virtue signal much? EE have done their due diligence and did not find a broad calling for a name change from the Inuit people. This drive is nothing more than false 'white knights' being offended on behalf of people they consider their pets. It's disgusting. Born and bred Western canadian and I've never heard someone used the term Eskimo in a derogatory fashion. The original term, Esquimaux refers to either 'eaters of raw meat' which is true! ever been up north? OR referencing snowshoes......you guessed it! Also true! Doesn't matter really, the Marxists behind all this made-up offense just want to burn it down, they don't care about you or the Inuit people or any person of any colour in the U.S. or elsewhere for that matter. Call me a nut job, go ahead, won't bother me. (see? words are just words) But they're not even hiding anymore, the founders of BLM are self-avowed Marxists and have convicted murderers/terrorists working with them. It's all the same big push. Open your eyes to the division they are sowing. Merit, soul and character matters, not skin colour or class.

FYI trivia: A slave ship en route to the US during the Revolutionary War was intercepted by the British navy and was told they could not deliver their human cargo. Not having the food or water on board to go anywhere else and being humane enough to not throw the captives overboard, they decided to detour to Nova Scotia where they stopped and dumped ashore the slaves. These were from several different racial groups with no common language and were taken in by the locals, fed and sheltered. As the months went by, the disparite people learned to speak Gaelic. Eventually, the British decided this wouldn't do, so they sent a ship, gathered up the former captives and transported them to the coast of what is now Mauritania. The Brits were kind enough to provide these folks with the means to build a community- tools, food, seeds and so forth, so they did, and flourished. So, today there is a black costal community in Mauritania where the inhabitants all speak Gaelic

For those interested, CBC is re-airing the 2015 mini drama series “The Book of Negroes” starring Aunjanue Ellis, Cuba Godding Jr, Louis Gossett Jr, and Jane Alexander. The onset of the Revolutionary War helps Aminata flee her new owner in New York. Knowing how to read and write, she lands a job registering Black Loyalists for escape to freedom in Nova Scotia. Do or Die's exclusive interview with President Trump Do or Die: So just how did that cognitive testing go? President Trump: "The doctors, now these were big men, with tremendous hands ....they all said 'Mr. President, sir... We've never seen anyone pick out a picture of a elephant, as quickly as you did in the history of testing. Truly, it's like nothing ever seen before. Verily, you are without a doubt, the most brilliant and intellectual president that ever existed - you must surely know more about virtually everything, than anyone else. They said this with tears running down their faces. So many tears, believe me. It's because I have good genes, the best genes. Those kind of amazing unheard of genes. As far as the fake media, and crazed Democrats talking about my being stable - just watch me drink this little cup of water --- with one hand!

  25. I was just pointing out the dichotomy between numerical assignment, and how it can be (in some instances) good (that is, a SIN # providing social support etc.) and in other cases bad (in the case of residential school numbering). I was not attempting to discount or justify the Residential School system.

I don't think it will stick but bad optics as an excuse? Please. You award a contract for nearly a billion dollars where no others are considered to a company that has given large sums of money to various family members over the years and that's not questionable? Then throw in you saying that the civil service made the decision and then its revealed that you lied about that because it was a cabinet decision and you didn't excuse yourself from the discussion as you are supposed to. Plus one of WE's heads is on video saying the PM called you and offered the contract and then he backtracks on that when there's outrage by people. Aga Khan, SNC, WE, how many passes and excuses does one get? Heck I didn't mention the incident in BC where he sexually harrassed a reporter, something that would have ended others careers, the broken promises (changing the electoral system, being more open and transparent).

  32. In all this confusion of posts, has any groups officially protested the name of "Eskimos" or was it only a sponsor wanting to pull out? My personal thoughts... most people do not associate the word Eskimo with something derogatory. This isn't something black and white such as Redskins. I agree with Tootoo and if the group of Inuits are not wanting it then change it. I can't stand when white people try to speak for other groups and assume that they know better. If it comes back that they would like the team to change the name, then it's not like the Edmonton Eskimos brand is some red hot brand that the merch sales hold the team up and generate so much revenue. It might give them a new opportunity to rebrand to something more attractive which could give them a nice boost of sales if done right. I still say if all else fails.... Edmonton RoughRiders....

  35. Why is all the discussion around whether the term is an offensive way to refer to a minority group or not, when really the question should be "why the hell do we need sports teams named after minority groups"? We can probably all agree that "transgender" isn't an offensive term for a specific group of people, but calling a team the Transgenders would be more than a little messed up.

  39. Cherry made Ron Maclean. Before CC he was just a young CBC sportscaster from Red Deer that nobody knew or cared about. Cherry made MacLean wealthy as well because his show was so popular & he rose up through the CBC ranks on HNIC because of it. Conveniently he saved his ass over Don when the chips were down. I think Cherry's time had come but Maclean went & saved himself. When Cherry went on his "You People" rant there was MacLean sitting in silence & nodding his head yes.

Is it really a racist name though? Not trying to be a knob but rather a legit question..Would it be wrong to call them the Edmonton Inuit as well?...It's a proper name for a group of people...Are the Irish soon to follow and ask Notre Dame to drop the fighting Irish moniker?..how bout any offended BoilerMakers...And lets stop offending the Ragin Cajuns...I hear they don't like that either...like where does it stop??...people are wayyyy too ultra sensitive now and just looking for a cause..or a fight I can see the point with the Redskins name, as that was an offensive term...But Braves?.Chiefs?...cmon...thats like a rank in an Army in a sense...heck I played on a travelling Baseball team back in the day..An Indigenous based team for that matter and they used the team name Braves for their ball team, and Chiefs for their hockey team and it wasn't an issue...still isn't You could go on and on and on with amateur..college and pro teams who have a nickname or support a phrase or a cheer that the snowflakes in this world will deem offensive...let it go man

If Edmonton had changed their name in the 80's, when a group of people decided that Eskimos was now a racist term, then you'd have point, but they've been the Eskimos since 1949. Your putting a 2020 filter on a name that was perfectly fine when it was given to the team. I'm all for it if Edmonton wants to change the name to match today's sensibilities, but I'm against them being forced into it.

  43. For purely selfish reasons, this is my favourite Non Bomber player. Greg Barton. The former Philadelphia Eagle, Detroit Lion, Toronto Argonaut & Portland Storm (World Football League) qb. Not because of anything he did on the field but for what he did for my football playing son nearly 3 decades after Greg retired from pro ball to Portland, Oregon. Over the years, Greg transformed Tyler's throwing style from that of a Tim Tebow long windup with different release points on every throw to a quick, compact & efficient delivery with a constant release point. That took years of practice & patience to accomplish. There was no one in Calgary to teach throwing fundamentals to kids when my son played. Anyone that could wasn't interested in doing so. Therefore, we went down to Portland for Greg's tutelage at least twice a year for about a week at a time for over a decade starting in 2003. Greg passed away a year ago this coming August.
