If you are hypersensitive to criticism, you should stay out of professional sports, stand-up comedy and politics.

Absolutely. But as a professional you need to keep that stuff to yourself and rise above it. Use it for fuel.

This is a terrible measure, winning a Grey Cup is a team effort. By your logic, Milt Stegall, Charles Roberts and Jack Jacobs are all bums
  4. 3 points
Irrelevant. Besides that Nichols isn't nearly as mentally weak as Glenn. He's probably a less talented player with a stronger mental game which puts them on roughly equal footing.
  5. 3 points
The nice thing about Matthews is they got him signed in low 6 figures with decent bonus structure, very little up front, because he literally had no market. It was very low risk for the Bombers, and that's really the only way he fit in here.

This team is built to be this team for exactly 1 season. Sure some guys are just starting three year deals, but about 1/3 of the team will be free agents at the end of this season, including many key Canadians.

-it's both, the chicken and the egg... Nichols isn't all that good and Lapo doesn't trust him with more than he is currently giving him... so Lapo thinks he's doing everyone a favor by giving Nichols what he thinks he can execute but it just makes everything more predictable and easy to stop... it's amazing that Lapo doesn't see it... I think Lapo is trying to keep Nichols from spiraling completely into the abysss… he doesn't do Streveler any favors either, or the team for that matter, by giving him what he does... it has become equally as predictable.... which you could make the case that this is the reason for some of the O line trouble as it doesn't take much pressure to get Nichols to bail...

A few things.... I dont remember Buck Pierce dumping it off all the time. And with Charlie & Sellers... that's a two headed monster that any OC with half a brain would have utilized no differently. Drew Willy had an atrocious O-Line, so to compare him & Nichols is difficult.. Nichols played behind the best OLine in the league the last couple season and still looked mediocre more often than not. And finally.....LaPo isn't the one making reads and throwing the ball. He doesnt call nothing but 6 yard routes. Nichols just panics and gets rid of the ball early 70% of the time. Call a play bad if you want, but I bet many routes dont even get fully run before that ball is gone.

I'd expect a 9 year vet to be able to make a pass over 5 yards and without the receiver having to contort or dive to catch the ball. Their is reason why people have zero patience with the guy anymore. The easy stuff shouldn't be such a massive struggle for the guy to perform. He shouldn't require every single player around him to be playing at an all star level just for him to make a few passes.
  12. 2 points
He didn't become anything, he's the same guy. 2002 #1 receiver on the team Milt Stegall, #2 Arland Bruce... #3 and #4 Charles Roberts and Mike Sellers. Dumping the ball off is what Lapo has always done. Cripes he did the exact same **** when he was head coach too. Remember all the complaining about guys running 7 yard patterns when they need 10 yards? He is the exact same guy he has always been. Can draw up a good playbook and must do a good job during the week, but as a play caller he absolutely ******* sucks because he does 2 things, he outsmarts himself and he calls a passive game. I have more faith in Ritchie Hall than I do Lapo and that's saying something cause Hall isn't the best coordinator out there either.
  13. 2 points
Say what you want about his play, but he loves our city, his daughter's middle name is named after our city. People here say he's a crybaby, but nobody on this forum (except maybe Tburgess) has had even 1,000 people angry at them at the same time. That stuff stays with you, even if you are a professional.
  14. 2 points
Conversely, you and your ilk appear prepared to excuse Nichols no matter how poorly he plays.
  15. 2 points
I don't think Glenn was mentally weak, its just that he didn't give a ****. Nichols seems much more fragile. Crying to the papers about getting booed and all.
  16. 2 points
Well for starters, I don't believe Nichols is a bad player so your argument really doesn't get off the ground there. Neither do I think Nichols is a great quarterback either. I think he's a guy a lot like Kevin Glenn where he can do enough to win games if the rest of the team is on board with that. So here is what I think, I think that Lapo is a horrible play caller, and that's been something that comes up every stop along the way. It's not that he's a bad coordinator, he is just a horrible in game coach, which makes it hard on his offense to run at a high efficiency regardless of who is behind centre. Look no further than BC for an example of a known good qb struggling without the support from a good game plan (because let's face it, Reilly could get a lot more help from his OC despite the talent problems on that team). Guys like you have written Nichols off as terrible and there's just no two ways about that. He's a guy who isn't terrible though, he just needs a lot of help to get the most out of him and right now he's not getting it from his OC who likes to play passive in close games or with a lead. It's the whole ******* reason he was fired as head coach here!

Regarding management of our current and potential QBs, I agree that our organization both currently, and historically, has been horrendous at managing, and developing quarterbacking talent. Regardless of Nichols success/failure this year, Streveler has got to be the guy going forward, O'Shea's logic of essentially never pulling/resting starters has completely backfired in multiple scenarios, and worse it has resulted in our backups being greener than they need to be when called upon due to inevitable injuries.

Could we run him out of town on a rail? I’ve always wanted to run someone out of town on a rail.
  25. 1 point
Oh? Because I've been signing Nichols praises to the high heavens have I? Maybe go back and read what I've actually said... I've said he's not been playing well, I've said he's a flawed qb, but what I'm not doing is laying it all at his feet because that's bullshit. All I am doing really is arguing with you folks who are ready to run the guy out of town after he's led the best team we've had in almost 2 decades.
  26. 1 point
I think that the irritant is not just Nichols inconsistent and often disastrous play, but also that the Bomber braintrust refuses to give Streveler opportunities to display his abilities or lack thereof. And equating criticism of Nichols' play (not character) to hatred is a false equivalency.
  27. 1 point
There seems to be a chicken/egg scenario. Is it Lapo calling garbage games or is it Nichols not being able to execute? I am no fan of Lapo but I refuse to believe after all his years in the league he has become braindead and is calling a bunch of 5 yard outs on 2nd and 8. I think its Nichols being too risk adverse and wanting to get rid of the ball too early before the plays have developed/guys get open. I remember last year after one of his shitshows he threw the receivers under the bus saying no one was open all game. Like give me a break. Maybe if you would hold onto the ball for more than 2 mississippis someone could get open for **** sakes. He's like the anti-Mike Reilly. Reilly will wait until the last possible second to throw just as a 300 pounder buries him into the turf. Not saying that's a better outcome but somewhere in the middle would be a nice spot for Nichols as opposed to dumping it off cause he felt a slight breeze.
  28. 1 point
So then if Nichols goes out and has a good game there can no longer be any argument about Nichols place? I somehow think that even if he goes off and has a big game you and your ilk would just wait in the weeds for the first bit of trouble to appear and pounce again. There is literally nothing Nichols can do to appease some people because at the first slip up they will be back on him.
  29. 1 point
Now I was kind of drunk when that last game was on, but it looked to me like Kongbo knew how to get into the backfield pretty consistently, yeah losing Jeffcoat sucks but really not worried that we don't have replacements ready to go at that particular position.
  30. 1 point
Drew Willy never looked the same after his knee injury in 2015. Oddly enough, Nichols career has a similar story line, albeit with more talent around him (thus resulting in a better overall record).
  31. 1 point
Right, and my concern would be that by then it will likely be too late to do anything about it.
  32. 1 point
No - Nichols had his struggles when he first arrived. In his and Willy’s defense though, they had no one who could stretch the field back in those days.
  33. 1 point
Or maybe that Nichols isn’t all that much better than Willy was. No one is suggesting that Lapo is great. Most reasonable people on here agree that he’s largely a mess, but your hatred of Lapo is making it so you think that bad players are bad because he makes them bad. There’s a lot of blame at the feet of both Lapo and Nichols. This is the guy Nichols was in Edmonton as well. He has one great season in his career. Mediocre to bad QBs have good or great stretches or seasons all the time. He’s resting on a season from two years ago and we’re going to pay the price for it.
  34. 1 point
I still say the biggest impediment to winning a cup is our offensive and defensive coordinators. Cripes remember the change that happened to Drew Willy the more time he spent with Lapo and how Nichols was a breath of fresh air? And now the things people are all over Nichols for sounds a lot like the things they were on Willy for? Immobile, checks down all the time... can't improvise... maybe it is time for people to consider that Lapo is a **** OC for a qbs development.
  35. 1 point
The Oline? The guys who blocked for harris all night? Nichols wasn't under pressure all game long vs Argos.. Ya they had pressure at times but it wasnt constantly. ABN tho. Anyone But Nichols

The way they lost is concerning - it’s a movie we’ve seen before.
  39. 1 point
With one game left on the 6 game and the Bombers’ struggle of late - I don’t think he’ll play.
  40. 1 point
No question the O-line stunk against Hamilton, but against Toronto, Nichols had all the time a competent quarterback needed. Nichols has no excuse/reason/justification/rationale for his performance.
  41. 1 point
The counter to this would be, with this core how many more years can we waste using the whole “time will tell” excuse? Nichols is who he is. It’s clear that even with this stacked offence, he frequently isn’t even adequate enough to beat a previously winless, mess of a team. How much more do we have to wait and see? This more or less happens every year.
  42. 1 point
I get this. And I feel the same. I'm just not sure how losing game 7 of 18 changes the overall goal? In fact I would bet that it doesnt at all. I know losing to the last place team sucks, but when good teams play badly....theyll generally lose. Is the goal to win every regular season game? Or to get to the playoffs and fight for the GC? If people thought 18-0 was even slightly a possibility, they were delusional. I'd rather this team lose to the Argos and ticats than the stamps and esks. The only time we will really see if Nichols and this team has what it takes to win a GC is October-November. Everything else is just preparing for that. As of right now they're still in a good position.

The reason he ain't good enough ?
  44. 1 point
OL was not good vs Hamilton, but was fine against Toronto. Nichols did not see a lot of heat, had tons of time and was cycling through his reads then dumping off to Harris. Really issue comes down to Toronto playing quarters coverage and taking away deep shots, Bombers have very little intermediate passing game with lack of trust in Nichols to hit tight windows, throw behinds and other throws that potentially put ball in harms way if slight bit inaccurate. That intermediate passing game is really important in having a balanced offense, if it's not there very easy to defend passing game in general. Bombers have the receivers/backs to do damn near everything, you've got Lawler, Wolitarsky, Matthews who are BIG targets. You've got Whitehead and Demski who bring a lot of speed and YAC potential once they have the ball, you've got Petermann who can do everything but is especially reliable in the middle and also a guy who tends to gain YAC, they had Rasheed Bailey dressed who looks to profile as a thicker Denmark type of steady guy. If a QB can't make the throws to enable this offense to function pretty seamlessly I think that's a tremendous problem in isolation of the rest of the team. Lapo's excuse for not riding Harris at 20-0 was incredibly faulty and gives some insight into his mindset. Mostly it's just sickening to hear the excuses given what he has to work with. See bluebombers.com.

Nichols requires a completely clean pocket to be even remotely effective. He’s the type of QB who makes his line look far worse than they are because essentially any pressure wrecks the play.
  46. 1 point
I agree - but he does need to be able to make some plays when he's not completely clean in the pocket - plays other than dumping it off to Harris.
  47. 1 point
Yeah I am, cause we saw it happen here too with Khari Jones and we saw it with the other QBs he had when he was head coach too. Streveler is a different kind of qb, teams defend him differently because he is such a threat to run himself, but defences know that to defend a lapo offense you give em an opening on a dump off that's where you can force the ball. Again, I ain't saying Nichols has been great these last 2 games, far from it in fact, but it's also a fact he ain't getting help from the playcalling, especially when Lapo goes into protect the lead mode as he did against Toronto.
  48. 1 point
I just can't buy the play calling excuse. Are you suggesting that LaPo is calling for 4 yard dump offs to Harris and having all of the receivers running routes as decoys? I keep bringing it up but last year when Streveler was in , immediately guys like Wolly started getting targeted 10 - 15 yards down the field on plays that start out exactly like the ones that Nichols run. Also you can't fault LaPo when Nichols has time in the pocket and his receivers have to dive, jump, fall back just to catch the ball. If I were to put a blame % between the two... it would be 80% Nichols and 20% LaPo. My only gripe with LaPo is that he doesn't use more sweeps and other plays (i.e. hand off to whitehead) when it's obvious late in the game that they will be running up the gut.

It's the devil you know vs. the devil you don't...they could make the switch and end up worse off in the long run. Besides, there are other facets of our O that haven't performed well.. Matthews only had his first TD reception in the 4th against the Argos, despite his injury-riddled season and inconsistent play, nobody seems to be calling for his head.
