  2. Your hate for the guy doesn't mean you need to go on a tirade every time he talks. Go read the financial reports of the community teams. It is brutally obvious that the majority of revenue comes from ticket sales. This isn't a revelation for the CFL Ticket pricing will be optimized to bring in the most revenue. Selling 100 - $80 tickets brings in more money then 150 - $40 tickets The CFL has known how broken their model is for a long time. Again, this isn't a revelation. Teams on the brink of bankruptcy, delusional owners, owners owning multiple teams. They are here because of owners like Bob Young and David Braley have absorbed the losses for years for the love of the game. This is not new news and should not be shocking. The alternative here and what we have been close to so many times is the league folding.

    Covid-19

God do all you right wing nutters have meetings to get your talking points straight? Cause I swear it's always the exact same arguments from every one of you. Sweden is in no way shape or form an example that the USA could ever follow. Sweden is a small socialist country. They have a robust social safety net and well funded health care system... and they are still have issues no matter how much anyone wants to pretend they aren't. The USA meanwhile has pay to play Healthcare and sweet **** all for a social safety net. If they just let er buck with this virus it would be devastating to them because such a large portion of their population lacks access to Healthcare to start with. In the States someone could go bankrupt having to go to the hospital as easily as they could "suffering" through a lockdown. It is high time people stop looking at things like this in terms of it just being about covid-19. All cover has done is peel back the layers and expose which countries have shitty governments and systems in place. It's why I don't like the "but unemployment will kill more people!!1!" Nonsense that gets tossed around. It's up to governments to support their people through this making the conclusions null and void unless the government does nothing. In which case it isn't the virus that is the problem, it's uncaring government content to get rich off the plebs and if they die so be it, it was so a bunch of already rich people could get just a tiny bit richer. That is the real issue being exposed here. As a nation we can afford to take measures to slow the spread of this virus AND support people financially through it. It's not an either or choice. As I have said for ever, we aren't trying to stop this thing, only slow it down enough so that people don't have to die unnecessarily because too many people got sick at once. Herd immunity isn't something that only happens if everyone gets infected at once, it will happen as more people are exposed, which will naturally happen with a slow, phased re-opening of things. We take our time getting back to normal, we can care for the ones who get sick and still get that herd immunity (if it's something that lasts. These things mutate fast enough a new strain could show up in a few years that we don't have the resistance to.

^^ It would seem to be the logical path to take for many, many countries, and that’s why most countries chose that way. This is real and frightening in so many ways and yet some people seem to want to push other, illogical paths to treat all countries the same way. It just can’t be done. There are loonies out there and I’m not talking currency. They’ll sift through dozens of articles to try and find some that make sense to them. Them, and their counterparts. Oh, and remember, YouTube may be fun, but it’s not always a good reference site.

I've come to realize that the whole "Americans crossing the border" thing isn't really an issue. When talking about NHL, the feds have said that they can come over, but they have to quarantine for 14 days before they're allowed to do anything. So I'm not concerned about that at all.

  11. So, I love the discussion on this, but here's a couple thoughts from someone in broadcasting re:advertising/advertisers... -Shopping for anything and everything is down right now. If people aren't spending money at a business (Wendy's, Rona, Save On Foods, etc...) that business can't afford to advertise. That's sort of the world we're living in right now. All media corps are BEGGING for advertising right now...they've all seen a major drop off. So, asking the clients to pay more because "more eyes on the product" isn't going to fly, because they just can't afford to right now. I'm not saying anything is absolute, but the whole world of advertising has changed in the last two months, so I'm not sure what would actually work...

  12. One thing the "let's find a way to do the season" folks seem to be forgetting is that it's not up to them. It's the perview of Public Heath to determine if and how it can happen. People like Lyle Bauer (exactly why we would be listing to him escapes me) forget that it's not just about seating. It's entering into the stadium, the concourses, the vending lineups, the washrooms, the exiting of the stadium and a bunch of other situations where social distancing will be difficult to impossible to enforce. Not to mention the very likely possibility of a strong re-occurance in the fall all point to how dangerous this would be. Football's fun, but it's not life and death.

  19. The challenges of formulating a plan: 1 )You don’t have an agreement with the PA on the basis of a reduction of the number of games. 2) Logistically planning requires a known fixed start up date as all arrangements work backwards from that...you don’t know a date. 3) you don’t know if provincially, regionally or in all the cities what the rules will be and if you will be able to hold games. 4) Will players entering the Country be required to self isolate for 14 days? Where and at who’s expense. 5) What will the requirements for testing of players, coaches and staff be ? Costs associated with that and justification to others who are unable to be tested. 6) what happens when a player, coach or staff member tests positive? Normal requirements are that that individual and anyone who has been in close proximity are required to self isolate for 14 days. 7) what is the projected lost revenue on the basis of a reduction in games, associated reduction in TV revenue, reduced revenue from social distancing in venues, reduced concession revenues. what are the projected increases in costs associated with all extra precautions that will need to be put in place? Those are just some starters that government will want factored in. It is understandable that they want a detailed business plan.

Feds said today that they need a proper business plan from the league and PA before they can move forward on this. Read a quote from one MP who said "we can work with them, if they present a proper business plan...and the sooner the better". So I get the impression that things are relatively positive, but the league needs to get it's **** together in a real hurry.

Meet Bleska Kambamba, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ eighth-round pick in the 2020 Canadian Football League Draft. In fact, he is the CFL Draft’s ‘Mr. Irrelevant’, taken with the very last selection in the whole affair.“It’s about putting your head down and working harder. I’m excited about what I’m going to with the Bombers. They seem to see talent and then give you an opportunity. That’s all you can ask for as a player.

If they televised all the games as normal...with no fans..viewership would more than double as more eyes would be on the TV's...so Companies paying for advertisement on the broadcasts would get way more bang for their buck..so there is an upside to that Gate revenue and concession revenue is the big loss in this scenario, and there is no way around that....I still tho don't see the league folding in the scenario when a season is cancelled...a majority of team costs come from salaries to players and staff and all support staff with game day and event personel...so save for the bonuses already paid out there is not a whole lot of huge $$ having to be put out in a no season scenario. maybe the CFL will have to go with hand out to the big bad NFL for some kind of "assistance"...150M is a drop in the hat for them, and the CFL existence is something the NFL most likely wants around as it helps it more than it hurts it

  26. Here is what Lyle had to say https://www.facebook.com/people/Lyle-Bauer/100018570634620 There is still a lot wrong with this scenario. There is going to be an increased cost in playing the season in testing players before / after games. All businesses that are operating right now have had to increase costs to put in plexiglass windows over the counters, extra staff and supplies to sanitize and clean regularly, cost of secluding players in secure hotels. Closing off tables and taping out squares people can stand in. You are asking the CFL to decrease revenues by limiting the tickets sold and increase costs of operating. Lots of questions on if you can even get American players into the country right now to play. I also wonder how much appetite the fans would even have in being comfortable in attending games. Big risk that attendance is way down. And a big question that even the NHL hasn't answered in their talks to restart is what happens if you go through all this trouble and testing and a player on a team tests positive? Doesn't that whole team need to quarantine for 2 weeks as well as the teams they've played? You've spent all this money to get the season going. And now what? You have to stop it all? I want to see the CFL play again as much as the next person on here. But equating a non-essential service like professional sports to allowing people to shop at grocery stores and use public transit is a little ridiculous in my opinion. Some risks are necessary to take, others aren't. You also don't have the same number of people in a store or bus as you would at a game, even with reduced attendance. Listen to the experts, and don't put people's lives at risk if you don't have to. This thing is very likely to flare up again big time in the fall, right in prime CFL season and playoffs.

    2019-20 CFL Offseason

So here's just a few problems based on my years in gov't reviewing all sorts of funding proposals. I've seen stadium/arena proposals. I've seen plans to create 5 meter x 5 meter gardening plots. I've seen almost everything in size and scale under $500 million. I've also seen a lot of people coming forward who don't even know what they need. They can't articulate it. But... 1 - You need to come with a real plan. Sure, you can get through the door, gets someone's ear about your plight but, if you don't have a plan, waiting for gov't to develop one can be problematic. 2 - If you're relying on gov't to have a plan, you better have a lot of time and not be approaching them during a crisis. Like now. The gov't analysts are working OT already trying to come up with plans and formulas to tackle the bigger problems facing our economy right now. This is not a small ask. Someone needs to analyse all the data and determine what the economic impact would truly be if the CFL folded. Also, what are implications for bailing out the CFL? Who's next on the list? How much are you going to hand out and how do you pick winners and losers. 3 - If gov't is going to bail them out, they need a policy in place to rationalize it, which goes back to the previous issue. It sounds like the CFL has identified that there is a problem and have found some ways to contribute back through offer advertising but they haven't come with a plan. That's what I'm reading.

If you read Ayn Rand's novels which are the GOP/right wing gospels, its all about personal gain over the common good and the hindmost be damned. Ironically, even though she railed against any government involvement in society as that would favour the unfit, in her latter years, when she was ill and debilitated, she had no hesitation in applying for and accepting financial support from the public purse. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the GOP/right wing thinking in its clearest.

  34. I been thinking alot about the plight of our great sport and league and here's my 2 cents. Start a "gofundme" for each team in every city, I would immediately give $100 - $200 dollars towards saving the CFL no problem, maybe the Feds would make it tax deductabie and that could be their contribution. Is this a crazy fan talking out his butt or would it possibly work.

  36. Interesting idea about asking the NFL for some assistance. Wonder if the CFL brass has considered it? I wonder if the NFL would consider it. I agree on both your points - the NFL could definitely afford to provide some type of assistance, and the CFL's existence is a good thing for the NFL. My only question/concern is that once you accept that money, create that relationship, you likely change the CFL to some extent. You'd have to think there would be concessions to the NFL. Maybe not a full "minor league" arrangement with the NFL, but, I'd think they would want more control over players, free agency, etc. Maybe not a terrible thing though. Might be time for a formal working arrangement with the NFL.

  37. The PPV idea is fatally flawed. TSN makes it's money selling ads. The more people who watch the games, the more those ads cost. PPV greatly reduces the number of folks who watch, which in turn, greatly reduces the amount TSN can charge and bring in. They'd be better off putting all the games on TV and giving the CFL the contracted amount of money for the number of games televised.

Sweden is testing conservatives’ preferred coronavirus response — and it’s not going well ( Written by Daily Kos May 7, 2020 Many conservatives are in love with the idea of Sweden’s approach—no lockdown. They don’t take into consideration that half of Swedes live alone, or that they have a top-notch universal healthcare system. They just think “no lockdown” is a better response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. If nothing else, Sweden’s alternative response to the virus was … a good control group. And what we’re learning now is that failing to shut down hasn’t just led to more deaths, but—surprise surprise!—it also didn’t prevent its economy from tanking. In fact, Sweden is poised for more economic pain than its neighbors. https://www.alternet.org/2020/05/sweden-is-testing-conservatives-preferred-coronavirus-response-and-its-not-going-well/
