Game 24 : Chicago

Funny story... I'm in the midst of reading Kelly Hrudey's book, and in it he mentions that if you ever see a goalie playing too deep in his net, he's having confidence issues. Goalies feel safer closer to the net, so in bad times, they will be playing way too deep rather than confidently challenging the shooter and cutting down the angle.6 points -

The game is facing pressure for a whole lot of reasons. One is that they seem to be losing youth in this country and they don't seem to be growing the audience to new immigrants. That's not to say that minorities are not playing, they just don't seem to be watching. The DIS campaign was to help reach out to those communities, highlighting how diverse the league is and has been. I don't understand your criticism that the CFL is not diverse, so it shouldn't be patting itself on the back? It is, in fact, diverse and is over represented by minorities. But, at the same time, is not growing the minority audience. An odd juxtaposition, for sure. But, it's an advertising campaign meant to advertise the league.4 points

It's not even about politics. It's about being a decent f*cking human being! Diversity is what makes our country so amazing and our league is a reflection of the country as a whole. Let's celebrate what makes us awesome!4 points

I get somewhat annoyed at this narrative that football is losing fans and losing the younger generations. The television ratings for the CFL were up this year. About a month ago, 15 NFL games were the top 15 rated TV shows in the US since the beginning of September. And both leagues have their best growth in the younger age groups. Sure, the negative perception of player safety has hit youth football enrollment. But have you checked out what has happened in Manitoba with high school football? There are now 5 conferences and 3 divisions in the WHSFL at the varsity level and two JV leagues (12 man and 9 man). The football scene is expanding in rural Manitoba as well. Then there is the girls and women's football leagues. This is huge expansion from the 90's when the whole thing was stagnant. In every one of these leagues and levels there is growing diversity. This are not just a bunch of white English speaking boys.3 points

I get the criticism directed at Hellebuyck and agree with it to a point, but he's not getting the help in front he got last season. Team D and netminding work hand in hand. Neither is working at the moment.3 points -

Any negativity toward the DIS program stems completely from a cynicism that is at least SOMEWHAT a byproduct of not wanting new immigrants into Canada. I'm not going to straight up use the R word to describe anyone on this board, but Canada is better for our multiculturalism. It's part of what makes us a desirable nation to live and work in.3 points

Quit digging and reaching for reasons to dump on something and whine about it. It's a great campaign and the consensus indicates as much. Go have a read and spare us your bitching: https://www.cfl.ca/dis/3 points -
The Diversity Is Strength campaign is one of the best things the CFL has ever done!!! Players and fans all loved it. By far the highlight of Ambrosie's reign.3 points

There is "idiocracy". It's not that far from what we have now. "During the 2016 presidential primaries, writer Etan Cohen and others expressed opinions that the film's predictions were converging on accuracy, which, during the general election, director Mike Judge also said.[40] At the time, Judge also compared Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump—who later won and became President of the United States—to the movie's dim-witted wrestler-turned-president, Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho"2 points -

True, but the message has to be collectively delivered by a number of organizations of different types, whether it has to do with sports, education, etc. It's not enough to make up a special day and have the prime minister make a speech or deliver apologies. It has to come from below as well. Whatever counts2 points -

When you consider that visible minorities make up less than 20% of Canada's population, it's not a surprise that the majority of players are white. But why dont you go tell Chungh, Harris, Demski and all the other non-white Canadians, on our team alone, that they need to embrace the game more 🙄2 points -

I still believe our record would have been no different had Streveler played all season. Nichols didn't win 10 games this season, the team did. Some, they won in spite of Nichols efforts. Fact remains that he only played 2 relatively solid games all season. When you're hoping he has a good game, but the percentages say he more likely won't, then you've got a problem. Averaging 220 yards passing per game isn't going to get us to the next level when there's even more focus on the running game next season.2 points -
Let's not forget, an area that the CFL knows that it struggles with in terms of marketing and ticket sales, is with first and second generation Canadians. Highlighting the diverse background of the CFL players is part of an overall marketing campaign to grow the brand. But as @Jpan85 said, the timing was changed due to outside factors.2 points

Also, because racism in Canada still exists, we shouldn’t take pride in our diversity as a nation? In what country does racism not exist? Who in their right mind would have a problem with this campaign?2 points

Sure, but I don't think the CFL is wading into the some of historical inequities that our country has had. We can certainly see a lot of Canada in the CFL but I wouldn't heap all of the social issues onto the CFL. It's sport. Sport, along with the Arts, has a special way of reflecting the good and bad of our society.1 point -

To not acknowledge the diversity of our country is also ignoring our past problems. So because we have a bad history of racism (this is quite an understatement), we're supposed to sweep it under the carpet and move on like it never happened? That's how historical revisionism happens.1 point -

That could very well be the case. That and getting injured/recovering from an injury are not mutually exclusive. The injury he sustained in training camp was a strange one and it does seem as though he was rushed back into action this past season. It makes me wonder if that got to him and affected his game from a mental standpoint. He had a very pedestrian season and was downright awful a number of times, too. He has to do whatever it takes this off-season to return to his 2017 - if that's even possible. It's not a good place for him or the organization, IMO. Especially with that bump in pay. I doubt he goes under the knife this off-season. What I hope happens is he and Walters can renegotiate a restructured contract, something that is more appropriate for his level of production and more team-friendly.1 point -
