  2. And “with Chris Jones’ Elks on the rise, Saskatchewan going all in on hosting the Grey Cup , and the perennial Stampeder playoff appearance, will the aging Bombers be on the outside looking in this coming November?” By guest writer Jamie Nye, on loan from cfl.ca

  3. What a great analogy from McManus: https://www.bluebombers.com/2021/12/23/goveia-mcmanus-extended-2023/ “It’s like when you’re building a new house and you need a well and you have to find out where the water is,” McManus explained. “So, you’ve got holes all over the backyard trying to find out where the water is. But once you land that water and the pump gets going, it gets easier.

Staying close to home with a very limited gathering of family and friends. This sucks, but if this is the price for both staying safe (wife is immuno-compromised) and keeping others safe, so be it.

we've got my inlaws and one straggler. 5 adults, no kids. Everyone triple vaxxed. I'm still really uneasy about it. Going to MB on Monday to visit various people (all triple vaxxed) and EXTREMELY uneasy about that. My wife is relatively safe and vaxxed, but refuses to cut back on social gatherings after being "locked down" last year, so we're at odds, to say the least. I just want to hide under a pile of coats and someone call me when it's all over.

With the exception of last year, I host a Xmas Eve dinner with my wife and kids, my mom, grandma and my in-laws. I prepare everything from scratch, including the bread to make my stuffing. It's a ton of work but it brings me happiness (usually). We have decided again to host it. My mother and grandmother are triple vaxxed but not my in-laws yet. We debated up until last week about whether or not to host it. Even yesterday we were discussing the situation. I am very uneasy about it.

  21. The news reports out of Ottawa said it came down to money. Arbuckle got a huge signing bonus ($210,000) in 2020, collected salary for a year when the league did not play (although he did take a pay cut), and then would not renegotiate his deal for 2021. Was going to make almost $500,000 and was due a $150,000 bonus three days before he got cut. When Nichols (who was due his own bonus and was cut by Toronto in a cost-cutting measure), Ottawa had an out and jumped to sign him and cut Arbuckle. Toronto, now short a QB, grabbed Arbuckle since all other teams were settled at pivot. It was also mentioned that Nichols veteran status at QB was more roster-beneficial according to CFL rules for Ottawa. The “LaPo forced Marcel’s hand” angle was overblown (he certainly had input and probably ID’d Nichols as a solution once the Arbuckle contract talks broke down) but became the new narrative for some (especially 3Down Ottawa writer and not-so-subtle Desjardins backer Santino Filoso - who apparently writes out of Brazil, by the way) once the move went sour after Nichols showed his injury was more permanent then anyone knew and Marcel was being thrown to the wolves by the fan base. In Toronto, Arbuckle had 2 hamstring injuries that slowed his progress. Again, he was getting starter money, including his $150,000 signing bonus with the Argos, but once MBT emerged as a guy who could win some games, John Murphy was quoted as saying they could not afford to pay two starting QBs and fill the other holes that needed filling, and Ryan Dinwiddie said MBT won the starter’s role. So off to Edmonton he goes. Now, despite not playing a single down in Edmonton, the club has re-upped him for 2022 at a cost of $340,000 but only a $5,000 signing bonus this time), so it would appear they consider him a starter for that kind of dough (if that means anything given the non-guaranteed contracts of the CFL). At least this is what I gleaned from the various newspaper reports of Arbuckle’s last couple of seasons. He may still be very good, but he has been given some pretty big salaries for a guy with 11 career starts, and those salaries seemed to play a role in teams abandoning him, especially with COVID wreaking havoc on CFL finances.

  22. The question that has to be asked is how the Bob Irving retirement will affect Auston Matthews once the season resumes? Will the news of Bob leaving also affect the rest of their roster. Tune into TSN & Sportsnet as they discuss the matter.

I'm double vaxxed. Not eligible for booster yet (which some reports say may not be the best thing) (I'll get it when I can tho) Parents are fully vaxxed (booster) so that makes me feel better about our 8 adult 2 7 year Olds and 1 4 year old Xmas gathering. I mean... prob 3 dogs too lol. But. See them multiple times a week now and ya... cousins are cohorts and single vaxxed (obv 4 yr old is not) 1 adult is not but... rapid testing foe work for that person

  26. I could see us losing Goveia at some point, but I get the impression that McManus is with us until he's let go or retires. His scouting job allows him to keep living in the US (Florida, I think), and he's probably pretty comfortable there. Goveia seems to have some aspirations to be a GM some day and the right fit will come along for him eventually.

    Covid-19

I try to survive with two young kids who will be given lots of candies/chocolates from family and no school or activities for them all while working from home. I may need to reload on booze to make it through the holidays. Other then that the family gatherings this year will be limited since half my family is away on vacation so each visit is with ten or less people.

If it weren't for the kids, I would not be hosting it. But, other than my grandma, these are all people within our regular sphere of people. And, my grandma sees my mom frequently, My mother and kids are the highest risk of contracting Covid, due to school and my mom's workplace.

  36. Yeah, but we lost Sayles and Rose in 2019 and Walters found Alford and Nichols to more than adequately replace them. We have stockpiled Grey and Tui on our o-line as back-ups who could slide in. And if Lawler goes, maybe that frees up cash to take a run at bringing Lucky Whitehead back (his West Final appearance in the stands has me hopeful he is pining to come back). All in all, my faith in Walters’ and our scouting staff’s track records have me less concerned than I might otherwise be.

  37. Desjarlais should get a solid NFL look. Teams are always looking for lineman, I think he has the skills to stick also. The only thing that might go against him is his height. He would probably have to move to centre. I think the two DBs also have a decent shot. I am always a little hesitant with the slot back to nfl transition that Lawler would have to make. Having the waggle is a big advantage especially for guys that might not be explosive. His 4.60 fourty time 5 years ago kind of shows that is him. I would expect him to maybe get a look but if he does I think he would be a guy that ends up north of the border again next year.

Media is already announcing...that there's nothing to worry about. Well okay...other than maybe the rubber bands snapping. 🙂 It is completely stupid to take the chance. But I know some people who had Covid in 2020 & got double - vaxxed in 2021 They had exposure to Covid again - did not get sick or test positive.

  40. How did you miss the pages of discussion on this?? They private bussed up from Ham to Toronto, so he was able to travel with the team.
    2 points
  41. The team traveled as a unit by bus, which is permitted. If they had to fly somewhere he wouldn't have been allowed to, so Hamilton got extremely lucky that the rules, unintentionally, favored them greatly.

  44. And yet in the biggest game of the year both times he was outplayed by the guy he lost to. 2019 Jefferson puts up 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles to Lawrence’s 4 tackles. 2021 both Bighill and Simoni get 5 tackles, but Lawrence disappeared in the second half and blew downfield coverage on both Demski’s and especially Adams’ TDs as well as the Bailey 2 point convert. Was wildly out of position on the convert and had initial coverage responsibility on the Darvin TD play, left flailing his arms in confusion both times. Bighill meanwhile got stronger and made two huge plays late, first making a TD saving tackle early in the 4th near the goal line to keep the Cats from going up 26-10, then stuffed the screen play in OT on 1st and 20 to force the 2nd and 18 INT throw. And when Stanley Bryant was truly snubbed for lineman in 2019 against Van Zeyl, he didn’t complain, he let his Grey Cup play show how badly the voters had messed up. Just like true winners do.
