Y2K was definitely not a conspiracy theory -- it was a massive and largely successful effort by IT folks to upgrade systems to deal with a very real bug. If we'd done nothing we would have been in some trouble. I was at Nortel in the late nineties and the phone switch folks took Y2K very very seriously. The power grid was legit a big worry, what with its continental scope and tricky-to-understand cascading failure modes. The 2003 eastern North American power outage was caused by a single failure at a single utility in Ohio .. and that knocked everything from Maryland to Thunder Bay down. Multiple utilities going down unexpectedly could have put us in serious uh-oh territory. Some of the reaction to CV19 reminds me of the reaction to Y2K -- since it wasn't as bad as it could have been, the threat was imaginary.

One thing is certain - it's about time meat packing plants stopped flying under the radar. They used to pay higher wages and provide better working conditions - thus they had long term employees. Now, they have 80% - 100% employee turnover every year. And none of their 'savings' have been reflected in the price of meat.

I think I was at that game too. I remember my brother and I going to a game against Calgary around that time where the Bombers were down big late in the game and we left early. Leaving the stadium we heard the crowd cheering and cannon go off. Then soon after, before we got to the car, cheering and the cannon again. So we raced to the car to put on the radio and find out what was going on!

Later in his career the TSN Hype Machine really tried to make him a legend. He was a Top 5 for sure all time but not the greatest all time. And there's a big difference between #5 & #1.

I would never say Geroy wasn't a great receiver...... but he's MASSIVELY overrated.

Personally I find myself more productive working from home. But if I had to have endless video conferences that would get annoying. I do hope my company allows people to work from home who want to. There’s no good reason not to allow it now. And it makes sense to have a percentage of workforce split between office and home. Other things too. Our company has field workers and over the years many would have their work vans at home and go straight to their first appointment. Company got rid of that. You have to meet at an area office every morning for manager face time. During this pandemic they reverted to home dispatch. Only makes sense to continue. Far too much connectivity to think your staff is ditching work without you knowing.

Man, that was a great team. If only Dave Ritchie could have contained some of those huge egos & big mouths during Grey Cup week they'd have been champions. Bolden ran his mouth all week. Real shame.

I'm one of those employees who needs the structure & discipline of a dedicated workplace. I don't think I'd do very well working at home long term. Now, under a pandemic maybe I'd have changed my mind as I'd be forced to but I sometimes lack the discipline to do well at it. I was an Independent Claims Adjuster in Thompson 30 years ago. I travelled all over Northern Manitoba. I had a small one man office & a secretary. I routinely put in 50-60 hour work weeks including weekends so I know I can work independently. But I left my home every day. Put on a suit & away I went. I didn't work in my pyjamas, not shave everyday or go without a shower. Being a school bus driver now in the twilight of my twilight working career I'll never find out if I could have made the change either. I always looked at it that my home is my shelter away from work or a boss who was a prick. (Had a couple of those). When I wanted to get away from the workplace my solitude was my home. I didn't want my work brought to it.

As I've said before, the most infuriating thing to me with this guy are the intelligent people who remain undecided on whether they would support him or not. Not the zealots, not the "I'd vote for him no matter what' type people, it's the the intelligent ones that have shone they critically think. That's beyond mindboggling and maybe I've overestimated them somehow, maybe he is truly showing some peoples real colours we have never seen before. This has NOTHING to do with differing political ideologies, differing policy positions, stances on socialism versus capitalism, health and crime issues etc. I wouldn't want him coaching my sons football team, not because he may see sfootball differently than some others, it's because I would fear for my son's and his teammates safety and wellbeing along with the other teams and their fans, along with all the referees , all the football officials, media, anyone who comes in constant contact with him. I work in the area of leadership and team development, I don't pretend to know everything and I'm always learning more about human beings and how they operate and thus far everything I've come to learn and experience shows that if you do everything opposite of what he does, all will be good.

I work for a health and safety consulting firm, I am aware of how things work. And i can tell you right now it always always always comes down to are the supervisors and management enforcing things. Workers by and large are ignorant, they need the supervisors and management to enforce thing. Cause you can't have someone from ohs on location all the time. So yeah the blame ultimately lies with management. When I go to a site I know if it will be good or bad simply based on which company it is.

I haven't looked at job postings at other organizations once during this whole thing. Used to do it pretty regularly. Wasn't actively looking to move on, just liked to see what was out there. Working from home is awesome, and has removed 90%+ of any desire to look elsewhere. You want to retain employees after this, show that you've learned something from this and give them at least some flexibility to work from home.

Helpfully, my workplace said "hey since the state of emergency was extended, we're going to keep working from home". I wasnt in the meeting so I couldnt ask the obvious follow up of 'um, are you suggesting you were planning to have us back in the office in May?' I sure hope they arent stupid enough to bring us all back into the office in the next month or two. I think its this weird aversion to Work from Home. Some businesses just despise the notion of employees being happy and comfortable.

I'm losing a lot of respect for the Calgary Stampede Board & their (so far) unwillingness to cancel the Stampede. Calgary City Council has banned all public gatherings to June 30th & the Stampede starts on July 3rd & runs to the 12th. So, just 3 days after the ban may be cancelled & the fact that BC has banned public gatherings such as weddings, etc till the end of summer, then why hasn't the Stampede cancelled? I've been living in Calgary now for over 30 years & I have to admit I'm getting a little sick & tired of hearing how much this City NEEDS the Stampede. When we had the floods in 2013, again all we heard was just how much we needed the Stampede. People's businesses, homes & lives were ruined but public funds that were supposed to go to stricken neighbourhoods or for relief were redirected to clean up the Stampede grounds for the Big Event. Now again we hear just how much we need the Stampede again. Vendors are saying they won't survive if it's cancelled. Civic politicians are saying how negatively the psyche of the City will be affected if the event isn't allowed to go on. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said that he had a dream. The dream was he woke up on July 1st & the pandemic was over & the Stampede went on as if nothing ever happened. Blah, blah, bah, blah. I just look at it is a no brainer. Last year, over a million visitors came to Stampede Park. With the US border closed & travel restrictions on international flights even if the Stampede went ahead there'd be nowhere close to a million people attending for 10 days. But let's say just 200,000 visitors show up. If just 10% are infected, that's still 20,000 Calgarians sick & overwhelming hospitals here. The risk is just too great. The responsible thing is to cancel. If the Stampede Board refuses then the City & Province have to show some guts & do it for them. Unfortunately, the Stampede Board is a very powerful organization with connections to the City & Province. Wouldn't surprise me if the Stampede will be allowed to go on with the Stampede as restrictions will magically be lifted on June 30th.

I did a lot of reading on this back in 1999 - even wrote a paper on it for my grade 12 English class. Right up until we reached the year 2000, banking computers were supposed to shut down, the power grid was supposed go down, etc. etc. They said many countries had taken the steps you describe, but it would all be null and void because places like Russia had not upgraded, and any contact with them would compromise our IT systems. Just to clarify - that’s what I was referring to.

Other than quacks who get discredited very quickly scientists have no agenda, only the search for answers. This is what I was going to say. Manitoba jumped on the restrictions early comparatively and that is one of the biggest reasons for the low numbers.

Simon was absolutely one of the best ever, but Stegall in his prime was still better, IMO. His on-field awareness, his superb route running, his buttery smooth hands, his attention to detail, and his ability to elude and confuse defenders were all second to none. To me, he embodied the prototypical receiver meant for the CFL game and field.
