I do have my own database. It's the CFL's play by play and then my charting going back to 2015. I used to have access to the CFL's play-by-play database. It was gone after the switch to Genius, and I'm working at learning how to access their stuff. In the meantime I rip each game's play by play PDF into various Excel files. From there I work on charting, field goals, punting, 2nd/3rd downs, run game, expected vaule of field position...a whole bunch of things that I think have value for future discussions.

Montreal will have a short week of practice. Evans is a question mark and it looks like the Als will be dealing with a few other injuries.
  4. 4 points
he could possibly be a good player, if he reigned in his gambling he’d have a chance. If he hasn’t gotten past the reckless play he’s gonna be another bridges. The league has seen plenty of db injuries, and no one else has brought him in. I like Dandy coming back. he was one of the guys that should’ve stuck in camp. Sucks that cooley is gone, but we can barely make use of brady, and peterson has shown he has legit talent. wouldn’t mind if cooley is back in camp if he doesn’t get picked up. Im glad we’ve made moves, i wish we brought in more wrs though. that’s a bigger hole than db.
  5. Dandy was great in pre-season. Physical, aggressive to the ball. Looked like a guy who has the skill set to play boundary corner in Canadian Football.

Yeah...but look at Strevs stats too...Rourke had more polish and pre season success too..means diddly in NFL politics meat grinder Also...non drafted...Canadian...cis school...he has the triple death card ...he may languish around a PR or 2 if he so chooses...but the nfl meat grinder will spit him out if not thos yr...next If he wants to actually play...make real nice money and be a big fish in a small pond he knows where to go Take it for what it is but I hear he likely gonna be cut...and prob no PR spot offered....doubt immediately any other team grabs him for PR...if at all Hopefully he has the sense to say i tried...time to go back on a new deal in 120-130k range to finish out the yr prorated and then look for a 2..3 yr deal next yr if he tears it up again

NFL experience now counts against their CFL rookie deal so if they spend enough time down there, they don't need to sign a rookie contract. "Among the miscellaneous items of interest to fans, Canadian players returning from the NFL with more than three years of experience will no longer be required to sign slotted rookie contracts. Each year of NFL service will count towards one season of their CFL rookie deal." https://3downnation.com/2022/05/26/details-of-the-cfls-new-cba-salary-cap-increases-ratio-changes-and-guaranteed-contracts/
  8. Tony Ortiz is going to be huge, trust me bro.

agree. zach is a problem. so is the ol, and wr core. but oc is the biggest issue. thing with zach is, he’s been hurt twice this year already and was beaten up a lot last year. he’s played what 3? games at the level you need in the past year. and we’ve seen him fall into this cycle before with ssk and ham. at his age i dont think hes got another turn around in him even with an improved supporting cast. Qbs are hard to replace though. ocs, and wrs pretty easy. that’s the starting point imo
  10. 3 points
dude is playing other 6th stringers, and we’ve seen better pre season mvps get cut at qb. elgersma isn’t in the running for ar, he’s in a battle for the pr spot. He was a flyer and tc arm. Willis is their previous 3rd round pick, who they’ve been grooming. hes a good mobile back up and at 26 is already good enough to be a career ar qb in the nfl for as long as he wants. Their other back up, clifford is a more recent 5th round pick of the pack. hes got rookie strev levels of athleticism, but with 4 years of starting in the big 10 where he won 32 of 46 games, started and won the rose bowl, threw for over 10k 86/31 adding over 1k rushing and 15 more tds.

It's fascinating how narratives shift. Earlier this year, the consensus was that we shouldn't overpay for Lawler, Ford, et. al. Not criticizing, just making an observation.
  12. 3 points
he isn’t sticking long term, he’s already done more than any cis qb in 40 years. he was a front runner to be cut before the pre season. i firmly believe this is the best case scenario for him and us. a year on an nfl pr would be phenomenal for him to catch up to the higher level of competition. his chances of sticking with another wave of rookies who also have great arm talent and drastically more polish will likely spell his demise down south.
  13. That's for guys who already signed here and went down in the middle of their rookie deal. Like when Ford was gone he ran down a year. Otherwise for guys who have never been in the CFL they would need to be on NFL 53 man or IR for 3 games in a season for it to count. PR doesn't.

Houston has exerience in league....knows the players and the standard sets in the CFL and has familiarity with basically most our defense so if anything thats a plus Has he evolved his game and is more cerebral about his approach and picks a better time to gamble?....we shall see.....I really don't recal his CGY performance tho....did he reign it in a bit there? Dandy I also agree...why he was let go is beyond me....other than the typical Osh tendency to keep hold overs even if not the best choice....and brings a lil more physicality too which is needed Imagine if from game 1 we had dressed Person....Allen...say a Dandy, had Schmeck from game one as opposed to the what in the hell Korn rostering...Even J.Jones tho he still gets limited reps....how much further along we could be on defenc with cohesion and guys getting reps/experience
  15. Lawler has averaged 11 games a season since the shortened 2021 season. This is the first season he's been healthy/not in trouble since then.

Maybe the Als will just pull a Byron Leftwich and carry him down the field.
  18. Yup...Ford was definitely a no go...that's a position easily filled every 2..3 yrs with an entry level deal if your scouting is even just average
  19. Ford, still even with the Injuries we have, I stand by he would not be worth his contract. Lawler in hindsight was a "miss" even at his contract value......

3 of our DI's take almost no reps on O or D, obviously one is a kicker. We wouldn't be losing much if Ayres or Jones weren't dressed if the trade off is a solid, reliable OL. We have 3 good Americans. OL is the most crucial position group. Make that strong as possible we have a chance at a consistent offence. Get the run game going so we can consistently use playaction and open up space down the field. Leave it as is, we are what we are. Look fine against teams with shitty D, can't do anything against any of the teams with a quick DL. I'd also be in favour of moving on from Kolankowski or Neufeld, or kicking Neufeld to C. Again...are we playing to win the Grey Cup or develop Wallace for when he signs with BC in 2027?
  23. Our receivers aren't the problem? Hamilton, Ottawa, BC, Saskatchewan, Montreal. Calgary and Toronto all have much better groups. I'd say that's a huge problem.
  24. Well the GM obviously envisioned a group of schoen, Mitchell, demski, clercius a d wheatfall/sterns... which is better.

Playing mtrl its a contrast in gm approaches, Mtrl locks up their key players on 2- 3 yr contracts , when they have injuries they look anywhere for replacements ie Ciante Evans, Dandridge, Hollins,Dukes We on the other hand dont, and end up losing young talent like Dobson, and Ford.and potentially players like Wallace. We only seem to do 1 yr contracts once the season is over and seem to be scrambling. There are a few exceptions but rare. Currently our depth in dbs is lacking and we try to bring back players we' ve cut. Oh one exception, we resign an aging quarterback whose play is declining. Its frustrating at times

and with all that, he’s better than dobson was at the half way point of last year. he’s close to as good in run pro, but significantly better in pass pro. dobson is very likely an east all star this year, and imo wallace will likely be better than him out of camp next year. Boy the ex bomber ol around the league is looking pretty good. hardrick, dobson, couture, desjarlais, and broxton.

  31. Pro coaching and also shotgun to Big Stan will help him along immensely...too bad he has to play handicapped with a brutal center Hes also just figuring out his best body composition too...which once he where he needs to be will help him thrive...has all the tools and once he gets his technical stuff refined for pass blocking dude gonna be a regular all star...we better pay up this time

  35. As long as the team keeps making steps in the right direction... Keeps getting healthier... Keeps bringing in guys who can play.... I'm happy. Fix the OL and give Collaros more time, and I think he (and the whole O) starts looking better...

My thinking is, we're not maximizing the benefits of starting 3 Canadian OL anyway, so we might as well start 3 Americans It's obvious that Eli is not going to be the starting centre at this point, so, as JBR suggested, slide Neuf over there Bryant, Vanterpool, Neufeld, Wallace, Randolph
  38. 1 point
    Sooo many holes...
  39. He takes some chances. I don’t mind him fighting for a job we need some help in the secondary with the injuries. He has a lot to prove fighting for a job so you hope best case scenario he comes in hungry and plays smart, worst case scenario he doesn’t cut it and he’s off the roster. Low risk move in my opinion.
  40. Go back and read the off-season thread. Just about everyone on the board said it sucks to lose Lawler but no way he’s worth the $300k Hamilton paid him.
  41. and he's really cooled off lately too.
  42. 1 point
I much prefer schoen to Lawler but that's me. Lawler can be amazing, but some games he wasn't amazing. We can debate schoen coming off the injury and whether he was ready or not but I'd have picked schoen over Lawler too.
  43. 1 point
With schoen on the IR who is that receiver you turn to when you absolutely must have a play? Demski... but history has shown he is at his best when he's the #3 type guy. Wheatfall is too inconsistent, sterns is limited by his size. Clercius is still young and not the real dynamic make plays all over the field type anyway. So yeah, receivers are a big problem

We would need to all of a sudden get really healthy... Like Schoen at 100%, 3 healthy IMP OL... Secondary continuing to gel.... DL with a heavy rotation and nobody taking a lot of reps.... It's th only hope.

As much as he irritates me, it’s true. Fajardo outplayed Zach big time in the 2023 GC too.
  47. Yeah but it's going to be similar to Dobson in terms of what he gets to on his next deal. You'd like to see a bit more progress heading into next season, last on his rookie deal. He's got way better feet that Dobson and I like that he is seeking out contact...but too much opening the gate in pass pro to do it, turning his hips, chasing blocks. Teams 100% have deemed that B gap vulnerable to blitz if they run stunts with their tackles to move Wallace around. I don't think we should have 3 Canadian OL (of who we have) on the field this season unless we had some crazy injury bug. Once Vanterpool is back they should be starting him, Bryant and Randolph.
