Kicking Discussion

I don't even care if that's the right spelling of his name, it's been perfectly obvious since he got here that he's a terrible place kicker. I don't know how in the world a management team that can win back-to-back Grey Cups still keeps trotting him out.

I’m wearing shorts until Liegghio makes a Grey Cup winning kick.

  • Legghio is, if not the best kicker in the league (is he the only one doing all 3 jobs?) then he's second best after Paredes. Kicking 90+% on the season. **** anyone that wants to **** on him.

The idea that Legghio is a top CFL kicker might be the most asinine thing I've read here since that hot take thread on Zach got bumped.

know how I know you don't read your own posts.?

An NFL kicker that has a game like that and stays on the roster would have Justin Tucker levels of trust built up.

An NFL kicker who did that would be cut. There'd be no second chances. Seen it a hundred times.

For everyone saying Castillo is the answer he is kicking 78.3% right now for FGs. Legghio is 82.6% on the year.

For converts, Sergio is 8/10 (80%) and Legghio is 25/29 (86%)

Legghio also has a better punting average (47.4) compared to Castillo (38.5) though I'd attribute that more to our STs play being better than the Elks.

He's no world beater, but Legghio is Cdn which matters, if you want to airlift someone else in, you have to factor in where you'd start another Canadian into those decisions.

Castillo may be 78.3% but most of us would trust that he'd kick a game winning FG in a regular season or Grey Cup game when it was all on the line. We don't have that same trust with Legghio. I think we all knew at some point, he'd cost us a game with his inconsistency. Someone name me the pressure kicks he's made to win games for us when everything is on the line the past 2 seasons. I sure can't because he hasn't.

No YOU don't have that trust. Legs is having a real good year. it is a shame he screwed the pooch tonight but that doesn't define him or his career. He is having a very good year.

There’s basically one kicker I’d trust in the league right now and he’s in Calgary.  Whyte is good but his range is getting shorter.

I don’t know if bringing random Americans in solves the problem.  I would have liked to see some guys in for training camp not Mourtada.  Now anyone in and on the roster is going to be under a 1000x zoom microscope and every missed kick will be a call for their head.

I don’t really want to pay Castillo more than what half our starting receivers make to kick 80%, although yeah he was big in the Grey Cup game.

Liegghio gets to have this feeling and hopefully builds from it because I don’t see a white knight with a big leg in our future this year.

You absolutely trust that Legghio will make a pressure kick from 37 yards out when the game's on the line to win a playoff or Grey Cup game? How can you have that much trust when he's never shown he can do it?  I really want to trust that the guy will do it & I was starting to come around to him this season. Like maybe he's somehow overcome his nervous inconsistency & now is mentally tough like a pro kicker needs to be. And then tonight happened...

because his growth as a player is obvious to anyone who doesn't fly off the handle at every misstep.

You still hate Harjalahu because he dared to have ups and down as a rookie now he's an NFL level kicker.

Legs wasn't the only reason we lost but no I don't trust he can do the job. You do & that's fine. I hope you're right & I'm wrong. Right off the bat, Legghio has to somehow learn to be a lot more mentally tougher. Don't let the last miss affect your next kick. Throw the negative thought aside. Just go out there & kick the damned ball through the uprights.

I recall half the city wanted Hajrullahu's head after that Calgary game. The Bombers cut him at season end. They brought in other kickers like Castillo & shut Lirim down for the season. He never played here again. Did O'Shea hate the guy too or was it just a business decision that he wasn't good enough at the time?

And he did make a Grey Cup winning kick.

I think a point to be made here is that pretty much all kickers have these games.  Medlock had one against us in 09 and it’s the entire reason he was up here to start with because he blew it in KC and Carolina later on.

Anyone got an idea of kickers that are available right now?  I mean the NFL guys are hanging around waiting for someone to screw up to get another shot.  Who’s been cut this year?

Is Crapigna healthy?

Id like to withdraw my more personal commentary on Mark. Calling him a loser etc. Heat of the moment.

Still want him gone from the team tho.

Fair enough. I removed it for you.

Damn near the whole team was poor last night, Oliveira the exception. Zero pressure on Harris from d-line, alouette receivers wide open in the secondary, o-line manhandled, offense stagnant. Having said that the team was still in position to win the game. Gotta make those kicks. Imagine that was the Grey Cup?? Yikes. If Legghio cant kick in big pressure situations then we are in real trouble. If this was the NFL he'd be gonzo.

You guys can cry about legs all you want. He ain't going anywhere. So put your pants back on and continue on with your time.

The thing that pisses me of most about the kicking was that he didn't even have to make the last FG. All he had to do was kick it out of the end zone and he couldn't even do that.  Take the rouge and escape with another W. The offense moved the ball when they needed to to get tot hat position.

Can Legs fix it? I think so since he's doing so well in the other kicking departments

It was a mis-fire on the kick. **** happens.

You know how you get mentally tougher?  You have a bad game and learn from it.  You have a bad game and realize that your team mates are still behind you.  You learn that you're never going to be perfect and that you don't have to be.  And you learn that every other player on the team screws up too, many times in a game, so the loss is never just on you.  Those are the things that one learns in order to be mentally tough.  Oh, and the other thing that you learn is to ignore the chattering masses who have zero clue of what they are talking about.

Exactly. He's already shown mental toughness coming back from being benched last year to win the starting gig this year. Kicked a game winner, week 1. Missed a few kicks at the end of the BC game and bounced back to kick lights out for a few weeks. Kid will be alright.

I don't want Legs cut and I even forgive the miss in OT.  That being said, that effort to win the game was inexcusable.  If you can avg 60 yards on kickoffs, all you have to do is not hit the upright to win.  Don't care about the bad snap - you have to be mentally prepared to know what you have to do and I hope all concerned with that play learn from it and become better and tougher for it.

The Bombers have already won some games somewhat dubiously this year.  This could have easily been another one.

I don't want Leggz cut, but he needs to get the job done and he didn't last night. It wasn't just once either. It was twice in a row. Once to put the game into OT and once to lose it. Most kickers redeem themselves when they get a second change. Leggz didn't. That's gotta raise an eyebrow or two.

What irks me the most is that he went for sloppy seconds... One choke is regrettable, but forgivable- Two chokes one after another... that's weak, and needs to be addressed. Not saying that he should be cut, but we should be looking at improving that position in someway.

Sucks that Leggs missed out on mentoring from Medlock b/c of Covid.

Wondering is Trevor Kennard a close comparison to our kicking situation? If I’m not mistaken he shanked a few game winners at the beginning of his career? He played mostly before my time though so I’m not sure if it’s apt or not.

I also feel Liegghio is the best punter in the league right now, it’s just the clutch FGs and converts. I’d at least cut Mortada and audition some FG specialist imports on the PR.

I am old enough to remember Kennerd. He was good before he got shaky. So different situation IMO. Leggs has been shaky the whole way. Totally looks overwhelmed/nervous/about to caca the pants every time he steps out, esp for the "must haves". I have zero confidence in him. He HAS rounded into form as an excellent punter, so agree there.

Castillo 5 for 5 in Grey Cup.

You're right. He's not going anywhere. He's doing a very good job as our punter & kickoff specialist as well.
