This is never anything any of us are ever going to be able to measure, but I also wonder how much of an effect on our talent the overall approach in the locker room has had. It's easy to say that Walters and company aren't bringing in enough talent, but what are they being handcuffed by? Agents aren't ignorant to this stuff, they know just as well as anyone else that Winnipeg isn't a team where you're going to get an opportunity. It's easy to say we should target a guy like Eberhardt compared to a guy like Tim White and I wholeheartedly agree, but does a guy like Eberhardt want to come here? Or is it obvious that he's not going to get an opportunity for an elevated role in the lineup? Are we going to pay a guy like that when all we seem to do lately is pay guys for what they've done in the past? It's easy to say get more players we can develop, but how many players are turning down offers for a practice roster spot because they're well versed in the concept that that's incredibly unlikely to lead to an opportunity here? For anyone new to the CFL, a practice roster spot is a low-salary stepping stone to hopefully more of an opportunity but what if the players are realizing that opportunity isn't going to come here? It's easy to say draft better talent, but same thing. Is Connor Shay a bust? It's impossible to even tell at this point. We have no idea because we don't give him any opportunities. When Jaylen Smith is a free agent at the end of 2027, is he going to walk to a team that's going to give him a better opportunity? Our franchise has become the retirement home, lifetime appointment type environment. That's the biggest problem of all and to me, that is why this all falls primarily on the coaching. The coaching staff has built that. The coaching staff has allowed that to be what they're content with. The other areas of this team aren't without blame by any stretch but when poor performance doesn't equate to consequences, nobody's playing for their job (or paycheque) and players are being allowed to coast off of resumes, this is what happens.

Don't discount the kick in the ass factor. Like for example a vet like Moxey gets Sat down because he's useless doesn't that light a fire under his ass? Doesn't that light a fire under everyone else's ass because it might happen to them... Doesn't that light a fire under the backups ass knowing that maybe they will get a shot. This country club we run where once you're tenured you're untouchable is damaging. Vets used to run the room? Great when your vets are that type but since that type isn't here or if they are are so far past their prime then the coaches need to take some of that responsibility back.

No, its still an over pay even with his step up. It's just less awful. OL is the position to overpay at, especially for young Canadians. Desjarlais is the guy we should've paid. The fact we squandered Gray and let both Dobson and Desjarlais walk is a big problem. We kept having NI OL walk for so long; we thought we would always have the next guy. And we just didn't. We had some bad OL classes, and the NFL started vacuuming up our top prospects.

Wheatfall is averaging 40 yards per game in his 3rd CFL season. He's not a good enough player to take an import spot in this league. See red, but letting him go wasn't a mistake. Lawler is doing basically nothing to help Ford out. 2nd last drive Hamilton had down 1, Ford put the ball out for Lawler on a scramble and Lawler casually jogged downfield, didn't catch up to it. Perfect chance for him to make a game winning play. I'm not one to praise Tre Ford for the sake of it but that was a great play by him. Lawler has his head up his ass.

I don't create threads very often but I was kind of missing a good ol' post-game thread. The title of the thread sums up my take on last night's game. Going from a Sunday game that went about as far into overtime that you can get to a Friday match against a high powered Calgary offense. This wasn't going to be easy. I'm not going to say that we win this game otherwise, but a lot of what I saw can be attributed to this. Everyone, to a man, was a half step behind. First few drives looked like we were trying to conserve energy. That was embarrassing, particularly our first defensive effort. At a point though, they all realized they have to give more if this game was going to stay close. That said, they were not able to overcome their physical limitations..and that really exposed that we are not a great team. Great teams have enough talent that they will find a way. The Good Our defensive front seven has continued to be a force. There is a lot of talent in this group. We had their run game bottled up and they were making life difficult for VA. Major Williams, to me, was the only DB out there that played well enough. He's a rookie though, and in the CFL you are going to get beat every once in a while. Our offensive line, I thought, had a solid night minus the last few drives when the game was pretty much out of reach (and one player that I'll get to). They were going against a very good Calgary defensive line. I'm sure some will bite my head off for this but I thought that Wallace even did a fairly good job at RT. I haven't watched the replays or watch every play after the fact. But the plays I watched him I thought he was holding his own. Demski and Oliveira were the highlights for me. When they are put into situations to play to their strengths, they can be very good. I just don't think this happens enough. It's hard to say that Dru Brown was good, but I think he's being put in a tough spot. As was brought up by @JuranBoldenRules in another thread, his options are all within 20 yards with DBs and linebackers all over the place within it. I think for the most part he's making the right reads. But he didn't have many open receivers to throw to. The Bad Offensive playcalling has to be number one for me. We have to put Brady in a position to make plays. We aren't. He is our workhorse. If anyone is going to thrive on a short week it is going to be him. But no, we continue to put him out wide for some reason. And we are running too many plays that are sending him east-west. That is not his game. Anytime we had him going up the middle tonight he was making something of it. This will be Stanley Bryant's last year. He is a shadow of his former self. Missing his block left, right and center. When Brox is healthy I'd say we line him up at LT and move on with Bryant. Defensive backs. A step slow tonight. Showed in their ability to tackle. Showed in their ability to adjust to the ball in the air. I get the feeling that Moxey is playing hurt. He refuses to do anything that requires making a play on the ball. It's pretty embarrassing. Nichols, for being a smaller guy, cannot be slow, and cannot be slow to react. I'm not counting him out completely but it isn't looking good. Holm had a terrible game and just didn't seem to be himself. The short week did a number on this group IMO. I thought the receivers had a similar problem to the DBs. We rely so much on Pokey Wilson and Tim White to get separation. They couldn't last night, and I think that lead to many of the interceptions. They didn't have enough and made the Calgary DBs look very good. As has been brought up elsewhere, we need some different types of receivers that can make plays in different ways. Special teams...half step too slow..was all of the difference. Also the 57 yard FG call when our defense was rolling and we could pin them deep. Hated that.

I’d like to know how O’Shea got talked into bringing Condell on board. Ignoring our power back and the gameplans we use don’t seem like things O’Shea would like. We have three starting recs under 180lbs and four under 6’0 tall. We were bullies in the Grey Cup years so it’s crazy to see how much that has changed.

I know you guys would make a different choice. And that’s fine. But don’t pretend 1991-2015 didn’t exist. And don’t pretend things haven’t been vastly different over the past 10 years. Because we’ve had decent seasons in my lifetime. We’ve had grey cup appearances. But we hadn’t won. And more than that, the success was never sustained. But 9 consecutive 10+ win seasons is unprecedented for us and that’s the reason they’re going to continue to get the benefit of the doubt. Not because they’re “buddies” with anyone.

Is anyone trying to put 100% of the blame anywhere? Holm, Nichols, Moxey looked like middle schoolers who have never played tackle football before. At this point in their careers, that's entirely on them. There's nothing a coach could have done. Condell scheming Brady wide, going away from the running game when it's the only thing working, calling hitches when the DBs are sitting on them, not having a hot route in motion for Dru to go to - that's coaching errors. Drafting Daniels (who I like but maybe should be a PR guy), ahead of some receiver options when apparently the plan was to go to 3 canadian receivers- that's scouting/GMing. Seemingly not holding players or coaches accountable and letting them work their way out for a questionably long time before making changes - if changes are ever made - that's on MOS. But there are way too many things going wrong right now for anyone to wear the blame, and the buck doesn't stop at MOS, it goes higher than that.

I won't defend the coverage scheme, it's not good. However, at the end of the day guys were in the position to make key tackles and whiffed and that made it worse. However, when your QB tosses up 4 picks you are going to lose that game 99% of the time. When guys let a guy free to block a punt, or allow a 118 yard missed FG that's not really on coaching. That's poor execution at a base level. We can debate whether a 58 yard FG attempt was wise, but we have Castillo and he makes those far more often than he misses them. It was guy after guy not doing his job on the field and I won't let the players off the hook for an effort like that. Now, I am in full agreement there should be consequences and if this is what we get next game then that's on the coaching AND the leadership in the room. There seems to be some people here believing that we have talent waiting in the wings. Point these players out to me, I'm not seeing it, and I haven't seen it in years.

Yep, no one else is that desperate. He's off the radar. If Schoen's speed is now somewhere between Lawler and Corcoran, he'd be an upgrade if he can stay healthy. Maybe he could coach up the rest of the wr core on what to do when your QB is running for his life too. I don't think he's on even our radar, though. If we see a rash of imp injuries, maybe they will call him. Otherwise, I doubt it.

Alright, using your logic... Players that can't execute a game plan, are poor tacklers, can't play mistake free football, give up bad plays at inopportune times, wilt under pressure, don't recognize coverages, continually make mental errors & can't make big plays when needed while continuing to play these same players. Then that is on the entire coaching staff as it's their decision to play them.

I've alluded to and touched on this before....and some similar things....not far off the mark on your take he did not if the type of player and attributes they are asking for coming from coaching tho...thats what I wanna know...where is the disconnect A good example was Holm...we cut him out right,,,not good enough and brought back due to injury,,,was defaulted in and all of a sudden when he got to play was praised and had the best feet since Fred Astaire...where was that assessment prior to that?...and who knows how many other instances has that occured but nobody gotthe good fortune of a vet slug getting hurt? Most recent the Jenkins/Reese situ....this isnt isolated...ho9w many games did Josh Johnson get when apparent he just wasn't good...Mitchel after him....on and on...Singer now...outperformed everyone in camp... truth.. the bench...or apple and roadmap is a good start for if anything a couplegames...allows the slacker to get message and 2 games gives a failry good idea if the new guy has any upside as to who...well Corcoran out for Clercius is an up grade...Singer tho for the Cobb spot easily....Cobb can stay on as he actually possesses some positive attributes and is athletic...doable by either dropping the imort center as it is no better than Eli...or one of the import linebackers... Korn as well is pointless...add the Global kid to see what he has....Peterson would give us more usefulness The big ger issue and you allude to it in a different post our PR is total crap...and we keep guys with no chance and no better than what we have for no apparent reason as opposed to up grading and continually bringing in guys...now is that the HC saying we good...The G.M refusing to accommodate a coaches' ask?....thats the quation but based on many many Osh decisions in roster, in game decisions...inability to accept fault...I think it's a coach issue I pretty sure a group of 4 or 5 of us on this forum were handed the keys we could do a better job @wbbfan @JuranBoldenRules @GCn20 @Mike @SpeedFlex27 looking at you guys...amoung a few others nobody is worried about losing a job here...hence the malaise and lack of urgency....Coach included... You sit one vet and let it be known it was performance related....I guarantee you see a different attitude and vigor thru whole squad

I might give Jauch & Deslauriers a pass (for now) - this is only their 2nd year with the club and our scouting issues pre-date them. We also lost Sunderland to Hamilton, after his one and only season with us. I don't think anybody replaced him so that isn't helping matters. McManus & Gulakow have each been here for 12 seasons now so I'd be looking at them first. That can be said for MOS when it comes to letting the OC/DC choose their lineups. If they keep trotting out the same guys, then as HC, he needs to step in and say nope that's not working.

This is exactly it. We're not going to get away with blaming the players for everything. I'll use the 118 yard MFG return as a perfect example ... did the players execute on that play? Absolutely not. Was it smart coaching to put that many OL and DT on the field in that situation? Also absolutely not. We can't use that as an example of just poor execution, it's also terrible coaching.

Weird to mention cherry picking stats and point out Wheatfall has 655 in 16 games when Nield had 530 in 13, but he didn't record any stats in the first two games back from his injury so who knows if he even saw the field... Riderville mentions the Elks week 8 game as the first time he suited up despite showing up on the depth chart in week 7 Wheatfall was also misused as a defacto WR2 here until Wilson showed up and he just isn't gonna be that guy. He was 2nd on the team in targets (among WRs, Brady had 3 more). Nield had similar game over game production in the role he is filling now which is that 4th receiver or someone who can step up a bit when the injury big hits... Although the Bombers are targetting him quite a bit more downfield than the Riders did last year

See no one is absolving the players of the mistakes they make or the poor efforts but when you have seen things slipping for the same issues for years now you need to look at who's running the team and what's the issue there where the same problems are recurring.

Nichols hasn't been nearly the biggest issue in the secondary. Both the field and boundary sides have been awful. No one should be married to the starting spots, but the one who has been all bad is Moxey. Otherwise, the primary cause of our struggle has been the scheme. This has been for 2 primary reasons. 1, we are reinventing the wheel yet again, and 2, the complexity has all the DBs playing extremely tentatively, which leads to getting burned. We used to take a LBer off for 1db, who would play between the half and the LBer. We would also, for that part of a year, take a DL off and run an extra deep cover DB. What we are doing now is taking a Lber off for a DB, but putting that DB in as a 2nd Safety. But then we are playing those safeties shallow to the box. We then rotate coverage to add a DB to the box in a blitz or to play a shallow zone. This is causing havoc with who is picking up the deepest targets. Normally in our system, either the corner carries his man to the Half then covers under that, or he carries his man deep if he's playing on an island on the wide side. Then the SAM or the dime sub db would wall off the lane/seam inside to pick up crossers. In Cover 3, the halfs and S would generally have deep 3rds and be the guy a WR is carried to. Sometimes that would be rotated over 1 spot with a SAM going up and a half playing short. Usually this would happen vs an unbalanced WR set to the wide side. We've changed how many DBs we play, and some roles, but largely it's been the same scheme going back to Hall. The idea is that the DBs play in backpedal as much as possible, facing the QB and rallying to the ball to make plays. That's why we have long coveted big and athletic DBs. Hall tended to play more vanilla in coverage and played with a larger cushion. Generally dropping the seam and short zone to the first down marker. Which is why we saw so many catch and runs for first downs back in the day. (the Fire Hall thread era complaints) JY plays with less cushion; he likes to blitz more and use complicated rotations to change the gaps from blitzing. Whereas Hall counted on 4 DL to create disruption, with the LBER blitzing when the RB didn't vacate the backfield, but really just eating up an OL to keep the 4 dl in 1on1s. Hall would do more with the front to create pressure; the cheetah pack we used is an example, twists/stunts, and layering pass rush lanes so that we wouldn't get QBs in 2 seconds, but they wouldn't see 4+ second pockets. Previously, Nichols was either playing a wall/seam on first down so he could be used in the run fits, or picking up a target pushing deep when he was in the intermediate range, knowing he had an S in the middle to anchor his leverage off of. So short zone player under and usually outside to leverage the WR up to him and a S to leverage the inside. He would then read the route and either take the outside away or go downfield stride for stride. What we are doing now in coverage is running a lot of Cover 2, with far less consistency in who is the 2nd deep cover guy. When we do run Cover 3, we are often running it with a corner on a deep 3rd instead of inside DBs. The 2nd S is playing so shallow/blitzing so often that the deep cover guys are too far apart to be leveraged by anyone who isn't right under them. And the 2 guys taking deep zone assignments are so infrequently the same guys that no one is comfortable or able to leverage off deep cover. Watch the first Calgary passing highlight at 35 seconds. It looks like a traditional 4-2 alignment in the CFL pre-snap. But by the time the ball is snapped, Kelly the S is right up behind Jones the Mac. Pause when the ball is caught at 41 seconds. Williams the corner and Nichols are at the same depth. Holm was the only deep player, and the ball is thrown to the target under him. Moxey has been pushed deep by his WR. In the past, this would've been a pass off of the wideout to Holm, with Moxey coming up to the short pass with the Sam playing the wall. But Holm is the only deep man, so they both get pulled off. The Sam, Griffin, is pulled in by the play action and jet motion of 17 for Calgary, creating the immediate gap in coverage. So the motion from 17 causes an overly complicated response from the D. Kelly moves up to the box, Griffin moves up for the PA and the motion, and Nichols switches to man, leaving Holm with the decision of being the only guy left in deep cover with 2 guys pushing deep, or coming up on a short to medium route. This looks bad for Holm, but he made the best decision possible. It's a no-win spot for him, though. No matter which decision he makes, we are giving up a completion for a first down. Then, of course, the tackling is poor because the pursuit angles are frantic and no one has good leverage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIRmxVOqF-k In the past, instead of having 4 guys in the tackle box, the SAM would kick out further outside to pick up the motion from the wr and the S would stay deep. If you watch the next play at 52 seconds, you again see us start in cover 3, with the deepest man only 10 yards off the line of scrimmage; then we move the S up to the box again into cover 2. Nichols and Holm are the only deep guys, which leaves us with open gaps in the run fits. That leaves us with 1 more gap than players to fill it, despite the crowded box. That also relies on DBs to close interior gaps. 1.44, we show cover 3 and drop into it, but this time we have Hallett and Kelly in the 2 S set both playing deep. They get it out quick to a WR for an easy first. If you pause before the ball comes out at 1.44, you see 5 Calgary WRs past the line with no DBs playing short. That pass could've got to any WR on a short route for an easy first down. VA just has to hit a guy quickly who is away from the LBs. 3.00 we get a sack on showing and dropping 3 deep in a more traditional 4-2 with the SAM wide and corners up. But if Va wasn't locked in on 4, who is open, he'd have seen 87 was open for a first right in front of him. Because he is running a drag route vs the Wil. These aren't cases of the DBs just getting beaten. It's our scheme being beaten and giving Calgary what they want without taking away anything really. Normally, you aim to take away some of the looks the offence likes while trading off deep cover and run fit balance based on down and distance. Instead, we aren't really doing any of those. We are giving up the high-percentage throws to the wideouts; we aren't taking away the deep ball with sound deep cover, and we aren't running the run fits well. The field is too wide for frequent Cover 2 use, and not having some consistency in who is the deep cover makes it very hard to hand guys off. Nichols and Holm aren't being asked to do the same job they have been here, and are all over the map in what they are doing snap to snap. The Canadian contingent in deep cover this year is largely playing the role of scarecrows. But no one is afraid. Kelly has actually been the best of those 3, which is problematic in itself. Most teams these days play 1 Canadian back there doing this stuff. Nobody is playing 2, especially not with the frequency we are using cover 0-2.
  43. Osh cooked Schoen for good. He should start planning on shopping for a knee replacement in another decade or so when he gets into his 40's. Playing him with a torn ACL made sure of that.

I stiil say for the immediate we talk To Rhymes...pay him a nice pro-rated deal...we can afford it Run out White, Pokey, Rhymes, Demski, Clercius inside as defacto starters...Neild super subs all over...Stop running BO out wide...Use Eli/Wallace/Neuf as our interior and Use MCI more than we use Daniels...I'd even sit him right now in lieu of Peterson and allow him to grow. Dump one of the seldom used DA LB's or the DB/Tweebner and roster Singer. We hardly use that DA on defence but could use the hell outta Singer...and If he doesn't push the needle...Use Womack....and actually bring in more for a lok see if neither do much...But I bet just the presense of either would drastically improve the production elsehwere. That be my oline fix and If whoever comes in at RT looks workeable...Leave them there when Broxton back...Make the shift at LT, Reserve roster Stan an as a pure vet and total team guy he wouldnt become a distraction and work him in practice exclusively at guard and see how he looks there That be my offensive tweaking in the immediate...and would be loads better than whats occuring right now... Defence...gotta think a bit but for starters we need to bring in some earth shaking DT's and drop em right in for Fletcher...They are a position that you can just plop right in with minimal learning curve and if we have to swap out one after the other until we find one...Do it!...They are not hard to find...only for us...Give Smith sole possession of WIL...and figure out the best bang for your buck outta 2 of Wilson..Jones..Ayers until Woodbey is back...I'd also be giving Shay reps to see what he has...and if nothing..move on..My gut says if given reps...and chance to develop...he's become a fixture...but he being blocked by fav's and vets and hold overs .

Thanks for the breakdown, and you chose to stay optimistic, despite what we all saw... Completely agree on Big Stan... I don't think he has many supporters left, other than the HC, OC, and OL coach... so I guess he's running out the stretch at LT... better or worse... if Pontius comes in a looks good at RT... the smart move would be to continue playing him there, put Broxton at LT and scratch Stan... but we all know that's not happening... As for Nichols... if this was a 1 game issue, I wouldn't be concerned... but to my eyes, it's been a 7 game issue... either he's injured, or he's cooked... either way, he needs to be sat... exactly the same thing applies to Moxey too... why can't we have good a DL and good DBs in the same season?!

What did The Trinity really do from 2022-25?? We got to the GC from 22- 24 just for our HC to continually eff up playing injured players. We choked against the Argos. We couldn;t hold a lead against the Als in the final seconds. Ever seen a roller coaster go slowly up. up, up, then level off just to go down, down, down even faster. We're going down as a team very fast while living in the past. The time for change was this past off season.

Wheatfall has speed & can catch so that makes him more of a threat than Cobb From the role I saw that he had when Mitchell was playing he could have been an effective pass catcher in our offense. He's not a #1 or #2 receiver but he puts up numbers that defenses would have to account for him unlike what thety're doing for Cobb. As I said, if Walters & Osh didn't want Wheatfall then replace him with a free agent signing with someone better. They didn't.

Made two great plays on their 2nd last drive. Too bad his receivers are taking penalties and quitting on plays. Two plays that would have got them into FG range from deep in their own end. It's crazy how many divas Hamilton has in that receiving core. The only one who can somewhat back it up with his career is Lawler.

It would be nice to see a different tackle in for Bryant, a third american WR in the starting group and somebody like Jackson or Allen for Nichols or Moxey imo. Don't expect it but it would be nice.

I can’t even guess at broxton. he walked off a little gingerly but under his own steam. Could be back soon or in trouble. I stopped the other pgt because it, the gdt and season thread all seemed to be bleeding into each other and causing repetition. But idk if it’s better with out it. The thing that kills me is not playing to win or pulling guys to get better. We passed on soo many opportunities to go for it that when we finally did it was pointless and a poor spot. And in the end we didn’t get a good shot at turning the game around and didn’t use reps to protect guys we have and get young guys reps.
