  1. It is, but the thing about the NL is those guys could sit for 2-3 years or be removed in 2 weeks without an offer. It'll come down to what kind of ends we sign and if/when/how many Nts/Dts we bring in. I mean, do you understand the physical toll and wear that playing 0-1 and 4i puts on your body? The transition from 3 tech to 0 is extremely rare amongst pros, and non-existent for guys 30+. They ran less 30 front in 23 in edmonton than we did last year. That year, they used Ceresna all over the DL in 40 fronts. That was also maybe the worst D in the league in 23. I detailed a bit of the issue with 4i vs 3t. It is a gigantic difference going 1-on-1 with a Canadian guard vs playing the gap between the T and G. We ran as much assymetrical nose based 40 fronts last year, and significantly more in all the years prior to 24, than we have 30 fronts. On the bombers site it sounds like they plan to keep broxton on the left side, slide stan to right, and have Rando battle for rt/guard, while Vanterpool also battles for a guard spot. If we go 3 imp or more on the OL, and stay reasonably healthy, this team is gonna be worlds better than what we saw the last 2 years. Back to winning games in the trenches. Also, we are gonna maul teams in the pre season. our 2nd team OL unit is crazy deep.

  3. Hi, I'd like to introduce you to Mike O'shea. Head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
  4. Lawson is really good. Though his versatility between being able to play all the dt alignments are his greatest strength. The issue is, you need 800-900 snaps easy from the nose in a 30 front. Lawsons peak is 550. Even if he stepped up to the 800+ and held up, you need insurance policies and some one who can spell him. The whole off season is winding into the point of, will he or won't he, when it comes to mos finally rostering the best players.
  5. JSK is two years younger and better than Wilson, so I don't hate it. Don't know why they re-signed Wilson still though

If Zach stays clean, and trusts it, I still think he can surgically rip teams apart.
  9. Haaaaaavvvveeeee you met Osh?
  10. he is not a 30 front nose tech. Not in his prime, or now. He's a 3tech. If any thing in a 40 you'd slide him to the edge. He has played some snaps in his earlier days on the edge in a 30 and 40 in a pinch.
  11. I got a sick feeling in my gut that they are only ever going to be allowed to play teams.
  12. Buddies and I laughing about it being the most Osh move ever... "If our aging vet goes down, we need another equally aging vet to replace him!" "But Osh, we drafted two young stud LBs that need the reps...." "Aging Vets!!!"
  13. 100% disagree. It's one thing if you have someone like prime Streveler who can be really effective in giving you that kind of look that can put a D off-balance. But for the most part you're not getting that level of production from backup QB's. They have so much information and pictures available now instantly that this tropey **** about "seeing some snaps from the sideline" and putting the backup in just to provide that has no purpose. If you have a weapon like prime Streveler (he was not that guy in his return from the NFL in 24-25), yeah use him. But that's pretty rare. I don't think you'll see someone play consistently bad and not get pulled if there's a belief on the team that the next guy up would perform better overall.

I like Walter's work this yr, and he is kinda setting the table and taking away some of the past inefficiencies...that being said, until shown different from Osh....I just cant trust yet in him doing the right thing...let alone the smartest, and you nailed it and if JSK has to take a back seat to any one of Jones and Wilson....then Osh should get and deserve all the crticism possible I think we may see a lot of variations of the 30...Ceresna can handle "some" nose but not ideal...so hopefully we unearth a body mover/consumer Cersena tho in a legit 30 would be a really nice piece on one end for reps, and if we have the legit nose will thrive in that part of his role...he did before already Gonna be interesting what JY cooks up as our kind of defensive identity/base...We seem to be piling up a glut of larger bodied LB's for this camp and how they all shake out and who/what is kept is gonna be interesting
  17. Not exactly true - just based on our current neg list, we had added Anthony Campbell to our list prior to last season & Xavier Carlton during the season. Neg lists are pretty fluid so I would have to dig around to see who else may have been on there and was signed or dropped but we definitely have had some prospects. That said, we have added a much bigger number of them over the last month (6 by my count) so it is a position they are focusing on right now.
  18. Yep, not all of the DT's on our Neg List are recent adds either - a couple of them have been there for months so it's more of an indication of what they are targeting rather than a clue that they'll sign soon. Neg List moves are all over the map too - some guys sit on there for years & some only for a few days. Some get signed while others get dropped. Some even get dropped and then are re-added later on - recent signee Khris Bogle is a good example of that. He was added 2 months go, dropped after a month only to be re-added a few days later before he was signed (Calgary also had him on their list at one point).
  19. They've cut their teeth on special teams. How else are they supposed to earn reps? How many reps do they get at practice?
  20. sadly...I doubt he will.....again....and be our demise...Walter's so far has literally set him up with a no fail plan, but If there a way...I sure Osh will mess it up...TBD....And I say that as history has shown us that...over and over
  21. In all honesty JSK is better and more versatile than Jones and Wilson at this point in careers...so this makes sense if he supplants one right off roster...and the guy he should is Jones...and allow the cdn rooks to get ..earn and maintain reps and also allow one of the intruiging guys brought in with serious upside a chance to develop...does Osh tho have the ability and moreso the acumen to see this and go with best combo based on skill..upside.. versatility?? God no...hes severely handicapped and biased in that regard

So a 2 game segment is your basis of 3 QBs? You can disagree if you want but the proof is in the pudding overall. Check out all 3 guys average completion yardage and it is dink and dunk numbers. Did they have moments where they didn't look overwhelmed? Sure. We got much better outings from Dru Brown than any of those 3 ever had.
  23. That's fair. He was also a part of one of the worst defenses in the league. 3 years ago this is a solid signing. History tells us that Wilson will not be a special teamer and that the two LBs they drafted will be kept at the bottom of the depth chart....at least that's what I'm worried about.
  24. Don’t see how he fits in with our log jam linebacking core. I know it’s weird to think but he’s 6’1 233, would they consider using him in some schemes as an end?
  25. Can't say I understand this one...unless they know something about someone's health that has just happened? Why did they draft those two CNDs so high last year?

Yea...and I am of the opinion that unless a game is completely out of reach you play your starter. It's why he's paid the big bucks. In the CFL we have watched teams come back from double digit deficits in the last 2 mins of a game on many occasions. This isn't the NFL where that would be insurmountable. I don't want my coach to ever throw in the towel on a game for the sake of getting QB2 or QB3 some reps. Just my opinion.

I did the same - I got a lot of the references but not everything so I looked into it. I've never once listened to his music so might not be part of the target audience and it's not going to make me go out of my way to listen to him but I appreciated the opportunity to see/learn something new. They could have done much worse (and have) so I had zero problems with the half time show.

  32. pretty much average usage in an outlier year league wide. Lots of injuries to qb 1s, idk if any qb3 seriously stepped up. some teams like edm had poor qb play and flipped between two guys. Has wilson had a great opportunity? no. has he had opportunities? yes. has he shown any growth, no. Is the whole league drowning in poor qb play, oh hell yes. Any good/easy answer for a qb2? nope.

that would be a big surprise to see. Dude lets players play through their struggles and doesn't even like to take out Collaros when the Bombers are on the good side of a blowout. Not pulling struggling Zach doesn't bother me so much -- Zach's upside is far far far greater than that of a Terry Wilson or even a Streveler. Multiple times over his career he's gone from zero in one quarter to hero in another. If it was someone like Taylor Powell or MBT or Brown on the bench behind Zach, someone who's proven he belongs in the CFL, I might feel different. So unless MOS abruptly changes his ways, only a ZC8 injury will result in significant backup reps. Zach has been actually been pretty durable the past few years -- started all 18 games in 2022-2024 and started 13 last year, and one of his missed games was the BS piss test one.

  36. If you watch Perkins in the UFL the offense is basically zone read or a fire drill every snap (there's tons of UFL stuff on YouTube, you can basically find every snap he took). I don't think he'll be able to do much from the pocket in the CFL. The ball doesn't move quick and he never sets his feet so the ball doesn't get anywhere on time or accurate. He's a fadeaway passer, lobs the ball. He is a complete run/scramble style QB. So he's not going to be able to function in an offense anything like the base offense we will be running around a guy like Collaros. But you could build something around him as a backup that relies on Zone Read, either hand it off, run it or chuck it up hope someone runs under it. The intermediate pass game will not exist for him at this level.

I'd say this also applies to Brady (and given recent events, I believe Logan Stanley agrees).
  40. I hope so. You have that backwards. We ran what we changed to partway through 24 due to personnel limitations. Then we moved sharply back away from it last year in camp and stayed away. Idk if JSK has that in him still. He had it in spades the last year here, then we didn't see even flashes of it afterwards. If he does, boy, that would be a great fit. If he doesn't, and we do want to use a jack, we do have a chunk of smaller tweeny end prospects. We need guys who make the AR to round out our front anyway you cut it. We should have a really good idea of what we are looking to do between now and the weeks before camp. We have also prolifically recruited Nose/Dts in the past. Never done well at the edge, but if we do go back to a 30, they should be able to find studs to make it work. The best Ds in the world run modular play calls these days. Breaking down front, pressure, and coverage seperatly then combining them into plays. Which creates a massive amount of utility and customizability to the situation. We've done that with JY more and more. Did it some with Hall too. I think the Modular style of D play call, with 30 base front, is ideal for the CFL. With the yard off the ball and holding calls enforcement rarer and rarer, you have to focus on disruption and hits taking sacks when they come. It's not like the US, where you can semi-frequently blitz for hits/sacks. It just doesn't work up here in this era. But you can push a C back into a QBs lap and mess up his rhythm. You can flush a pocket, move around and close passing lanes, and exchange droppers/rushers leaving the qb with no idea on any play who or how many are coming. And the best way to do all that stuff, is with the 30 front. But like everything else, D in the CFL, it depends on the versatility of your AR. If we have guys who can play inside out on the line, guys who can rush from a 3pt and stand up while playing lber or db, lbers who can cover in pass or dbs who can play down hill and in the box, we can take it to offences like you seldom see from Ds these days. I hope so, we are all betting on it happening. I mean, only place to go is up. And with a better OL, wrs, and a competent offensive system/playcall, zach couldn't ask for more.
  41. 1 point
We ran what we could do last year because of personnel. Younger likes 30 fronts, it was the defensive system he played a lot in as an Argo. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that what we are doing seems to align with his love of 30 fronts. I would suspect our 30 fronts wouldn't exactly be the traditional 30, more of a 30 using a lot more LBer blitzes, which is one of the reasons we signed JSK in my opinion. A Lber that can blitz from depth which Jones didn't show he was particularly great at.
  42. Makes sense. You really need a stud DT in the middle for a 30 front to be successful. Enter Jake Ceresna.
  43. 1 point
Didn't JSK play some MLB in Hamilton? Could work better over Tony Jones in Jordan Younger's style of defense...blitzing/coverage.
  44. 1 point
Out of reach is a tough one, that depends as well imo. If you are in a qb controversy, qb2 might give you a much better chance to win if changed early. Outside of that, yeah, the game should be cooked when you swap. That point, imo, is generally pretty obvious when it occurs. You see the ol/dl and sometimes the D in general just gas out from the exertion and getting their tails kicked. It's hard to go off score to say when the game is over. Sometimes we've seen this team buried by 10 points or less in the last 2 years with tons of time to play. But we've seen other versions of this team come back from massive deficits. I think you also have to look at protecting your QB1 as well. If you are in a game where the QB is being pressured/hit half of all drop-back snaps, keeping him in to try and throw his way to victory in a lost cause is extremely risky. If you are throwing to run the clock or running, you may as well have a backup to do that. Dru brown became what he is by and large part being forced into games and coming in to clean up. Also, after the field changes next year, I doubt we see the comebacks very often anymore. That is doubly true in the CFL during this era. The thing is, you don't get to fully develop guys without playing them. Clean-up reps are a nice stepping stone to being able to take spot starts or step in early during a game. This used to be a luxury, but with the state of QBing, it's almost a necessity that teams identify and develop QB talent urgently. When I look at what the QB situation in this league would be 1-3 years in the future, it feels like I'm walking through a graveyard and picking out a plot. Rourke and Alexander turn 28 this year and Brown turns 29, Arbuckle turns 33 and Vaj turns 34. And thats the young guys lol. Guys like Brown, Alexander, and Arbuckle might be flashes in the pan as well. Qbing in the CFL, is worse than the CFL draft for being a crap shoot now.
  45. The more your starter plays when a game is out of reach, the more risk for injury. To me, if we're up 21 points going into the fourth quarter, I'd be pulling the starter to protect him. Also, if I was HC, i wouldn't have some clueless rookie as my backup behind Collaros, That's just plain stupid (but we're talking Osh here). I'd be screaming at Walters to sign a veteran qb who has played & has experience like MBT.
  46. See this is where I think this approach is more complicated than meets the eye and I don't necssarily agree ZC given full reign no matter what trumps all of the other benefits of changing things up. Yes of course your #1 guy is your #1 guy and needs to know that by giving him tons of rope to works things out when he needs to. However in the same breath, a coach also may need to make some tough decisions at certain points in the game if he's not progressing thru his struggles (not someone else's struggles, his struggles) and give the 2nd QB a few reps so he can maybe see the game from a different view, give him some time to collect his thoughts, have a chat with the QB coach whatever he needs to do to reset. I think it's finding that balance of ZC knowing he's the man with we are good to go if we need to change things up to get us back into the game.

Sure. These are the drop-back snaps for QBs who were the QB3 overall or at some point. BC, Masoli had 91, Brice had 4. Cal, walker 66, vaughn 32, love 8 Edm, snider 0 Ham, Dole 0, powell 9 Mtl, Morgan 98, Evans 37, Dukes 2 Ott, Adams 69, Shiltz 57 Sask, Coan 9 To, Duggan 20, Horn 14 Again, Wilson had 26. Pretty bad for sure. Bellefeuille was a chunk better than hogan still imo. Wr core, bit of a push imo.
  48. 1 point
According to PFF, 68 snaps last year, 28 drop-back snaps. 24 of his snaps were designed run, keeper, kneel, etc. It also lists him as having 2 "big time" throws and 3 turnover-worthy plays. In 24, he had 6 drop-backs, 24 designed runs, on 40 total snaps with 1 turnover-worthy play. I don't put any value other than crude entertainment on their own metrics, but as a fun fact, Wilson was their worst rated qb and worst-rated passer in the whole league last year. They had Wilson as a 42.2 overall and 29.9 as a passer vs strevy at 62.2 and 57.4. They only had strev as the 9th-worst passer and 15th worst qb. Which seems wildly inaccurate, and deeply depressing at the same time. Im not sure a clear downgrade exists from Hogan, strev, those wrs/ol.
  49. Where's a stat guy when you need him. How many meaningful game speed reps has Terry Wilson been given since arriving here? I'm not suggesting anything with this question, just curious.
