I think that’s why you do go to the pa though. It’s divisive changes that you need to consult over. a change like, each team has their own side line, doesn’t need discussion it goes with out saying. The game has 3 stake holders. the players, the fans, and the league. one side making sweeping large scale changes with out consulting the two is how you kill your market. Even if it’s what I suspect in the worst case, that we are a couple years away from being a 4/5 team league with no tv deal, being open with the risks would garner understanding and positivity. As it is, half the player base is pissed, and a huge portion of the fan base country wide is pissed. I think they could’ve gotten people on board for more of the changes with a more transparent, inclusive approach.

Consulting the players means talking to the PA. Not like everyone gets asked individually.

That's the big concern though, they're making these changes which will do nothing to attract new fans, while at the same time upsetting the existing ones. The rules are not and have never been the issue with regard to attracting and retaining fans. The effort that the marketing teams put in, the game day experience (see Winnipeg), and to an extent the results on the field (see Edmonton for the negative side) are what will bring people to the stadiums and drive revenue. Even if these rule changes did drive up the scoring and 50 points became a regular thing, it would do nothing to attract new fans. These changes are short sighted and lazy as far as I'm concerned.

The game against the Lions was a pleasant surprise But in the other two wins, DST has 2x the touchdowns of the offense and Streveler has 4 turnovers... that's not exactly a recipe for winning football.
  6. No one has been able to describe even a single reason why the NFL has any interest in any business that is CFL related. The NFL already has a feeder system, it's called the NCAA. The vast majority of players coming into the NFL are from there, there are maybe a handful of players who fall through the cracks and end up in the CFL and then get another shot that way. Heck, with the advent of NIL there are probably 30+ teams that are paying more to their players than a cap-compliant CFL team would be paying to theirs. The only two markets they probably care about is Toronto, which has close ties to the Bills, and Vancouver, who seem to favor the Seahawks. Winnipeg is reasonably close to the Vikings, I'm not sure what East of Ontario favors but i'm guessing whatever team is dominate the time... I can't imagine Quebec catching on with an NFL football team. Alberta and Saskatchewan are both quite far away from any NFL markets, and not desirable media markets.

he had an excellent, maybe his best game manager play before being hurt. Hogan for sure is a problem, wrs have been one but I think are solid to good now. the ol has been all over the place. As long as kola is in it isn’t gonna be great but it should be good enough. if they’d put Vanterpool back in it’d be better but they won’t.
  9. Here's hoping..... I firmly believe this to be true. This is exactly why they brought him in the broadcasts this year...

Strevellers problems are clearly that the goal posts are in the way, check back next year he will be mop
  12. Also, with more punts deep to pin an opponent you probably get less scoring as well since it becomes a game of kicking unreturnable balls back and forth to each other. It's just pants on head ******** logic.

Definitely need Zach back.. and good timing for Sterns.. now let's ******* protect the QB and give him time to cook.
  14. Thats another thing...If the league wanted to be more visible...open up to more eyes and viewers...time to start breaking up their broadcast rights into multiple packages and market them to new stations...TSN is embarrasingly bad....and more times than not...especially with the Kate led panel cringe worthy to watch...and thats being polite...if someone was happening to be just channel surfing and stopped on some of their sctick for a moment....it ain't drawing them in...Up the production Bring in a NFL ran broadcast entourage....graphics...camera views....pbp and panel people... how they go about producing the game....It would be likely unrecognizable to the CFL fan....and in a good way
  15. You're absolutely spot on ..

I agree. It seems like a shady way of changing the rules so that the league can open up future opportunity to more align with the NFL ruleset - possibilities including farm system for the NFL, a partnership (and thus fully integrating into the NFL ruleset), or even worse - selling out the league to the NFL - where they could eventually move our teams out of our cities. Yes, I am thinking the worst... but nothing else makes sense.
  17. There is lots of weird math that is going on The league is suggesting that the presence of the goal posts along the goal line is somehow surpressing scoring, but teams are 221/360 for red zone opportunities (61.4%) this year. I can't find the NFL as a league average, but in 2024 that rate would put the CFL at number 10, behind the Panthers at 62% and above the Packers at 59%... and none of those teams have to deal with goal posts.
  18. Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, my friends. Forty per cent of all people know that.

Given what we've seen with Zac, we need to do everything we can to protect him. If Vanderpool could help do it, even if it means not adding woods, or OShea forbid Ayers. How effective Zac will be given that likely he wiil be dumping off the ball at first sign of trouble or relying on a quick passing game ( not his strength) is a question, but cant be worse than the alternative

Neuf is also turning 37 this year, and the biggest part of the rules won't start until 26—there's very little chance he'll play long enough to see them. One guy caring than others isn't much of a point either.

I won the Alberta provincial pee wee championship in 2009 as a coach using the Wing T. I had a talented 12 year old qb. I adapted the playbook from the qb being a spinner to doing RPO which he picked up & read beautifully. There was so much misdirection that we easily racked up 300 yards rushing every game. We were extremely lucky as we had 4 outstanding running backs as starters. We struggled the first couple of games going 2-3 But then going undefeated the rest of the way for the regular season, playoffs & championship game.

The biggest issue is that this is clearly just the first step... They'll get people used to this and then move in to the spicier meatballs like the 4th down...
  24. Whether these changes are going to be good for Canadian football or not will need to be seen. Sometimes you just need to stir things up. The thing that bothers me though is they announced these major changes right in the most important time of the season so all the talk is flowing away from the last 1/4 of the season when all thought should be on playoff possibilities. Would have been a lot more effective to make this announcement in the off season and good or bad would get people talking about the game.

One of the things they are using to try and sell the goalpost move is that their analytics says there will be 60 more TDs per year... that's less than 1 per game (72 games per year), but did they measure how many less field goals there will be because you need to get up inside the 30 yard line before you try for one? If there are 2 less field goals per game, the change is awash, but I believe that the change of kicks happening from the 45 yard line (and sometimes further) to the 30 yard line will reduce the number of field goals by far more, so now you've reduced scoring overall and made the game less exciting. Sure TDs are more exciting than field goals, but multiple lead changes because of more opportunities to scored is also more exciting. Overall 0.83 more TD per game is not going to be more exciting than the lead changing 10 times (like the Edmonton & Hamilton game last week).

100%. I wonder if Sterns goes in at Wheatfall's WR spot, or if he goes back to slot and Mitchell finally bumps out to the WR spot? If the fit with him is as bad as it seems with zach/hogan/the offence, maybe we put some one like Wilson at that premium spot. Wouldn't mind if Echols got the look and sterns got an extra week to recover and prep for return. Haven't heard about Clercius but that looked bad, so I'm guessing corcoran goes in and cobb comes on. Wish we'd shake up the DL.
  28. Regardless of whether the changes become successful or not, NOT consulting the players and coaches is comically bad.

Hey don't insult us Single Wing Dudes - I was actually referred to as "the spinning back" on our H.S. team. And to boot the Iowa State Cyclones ran Single Wing until probably late 1960's. Then we all upgraded to the Wing-T and Double Wing-T formations (thanks to Forrest Evashevski (Univ of Iowa Head Coach).
  30. MOS hates these changes? MOS is in my good books again. Mike, if you want to roster 30 DBs, go for it.

So you are saying that this is a brilliant marketing move akin to new Coke (for those old enough to remember)? - Put out a new worse product - Get everyone upset and emotionally involved realize they care. - Bring back CFL classic in a few years and watch ratings soar!

  33. ^^^^^^^^^ This guy gets it. Obviously the on-field product needs to be worth paying for along with the entire game day experience. The former is obviously trickier. The latter can be taught by those that seem to have mastered it *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*....but the majority of fans view most of their games on a screen. As someone that has extensive experience with broadcasting and promotions don't ever discount the power of a good promotion. In radio we didn't have the benefit of visuals...or the ability to advertise on competing stations like TV can do with other channels. When's the last time, if ever, have you seen an add for the CFL on a channel other than TSN? How many channels does Bell control? Frankly it comes off like TSN/Bell doesn't really give a dump about the league.
  34. The more I think about it, Luke Willson is prolly good friends with Johnston and was used by the commish to call out the so called blemishes with the league. Willson has been saying the CFL needs to get ride of the rouge, change the last 3 minutes etc. And anyone that doesnt agree with him is stuck in the past and is afraid of change.
  35. This has nothing to do with the NFL....or any possible fluid relationship....NFL doesnt need it...never will. I think this fear of only the beginning is also just fer mongering...League will never go to 4 downs...what point would that make. I believe every tall forehead knows that one little decision would be the death blow and basically ruin the whole thing Changes can also be reversed too, if the fall out and the loss of fans which is the key driver...either by viewers or seats in butts affects the bottom line. Look how many times they changed the ratio requirement...the league still continued, and really if they truly wanted to create more scoring and exciting play, and maybe attract some pockets of fans they are missing right now, then as much as many if you have bemoaned it before....reduce the ratio...and have better players actually play, or of you have a 3 yr or more vet Canadian to your team you can account for 2 ST demon's as part of your "starting" 7 allowing teams 2 more valuable import spots on offence or defence And really....do people really come out in droves to watch below average at best Canadian guys running around chasing kicks and punts? If you do...Support your local CIS and Junior/high school football teams

So fun Collaros stat Bombers have had 6 home games. Collaros has missed 2 (Suspension Week 2 vs BC, Injured Week 9 vs Toronto), been knocked out of 2 (Week 7 vs Calgary, Week 14 vs the Riders) and started and finished the game twice (Week 4 vs Edmonton, Week 11 vs Ottawa). Based on this, I expect Collaros to play this game, get injured again vs Saskatchewan, and then miss the Season Finale vs Montreal.

zachs right that they didn’t change any of the most important parts. but they did just about every thing under that. They have no place to go now but into the critical territory. I bet they had their new stats place do it. which means the info would be worthless lol. Agree, we see far more punts and far less fgs. I don’t think we will see any significant bump in tds. If they really wanted to boost scoring, which we don’t need to, they could formalize new blocking rules. it’s all over the place in terms of enforcement, but far far from the rules currently.

  43. As wbbfan noted, a good employer would consult stakeholders before major changes are made.
  44. A good employer would 100% consult with their employees, managers and stake holders before large changes to the identity, branding and product of said company. edit: Doesn't mean that the employer needs to heed all or any of the suggestions- it's just good business sense to consult those mentioned above.
  45. 1 point
Yep, and Usports. They should've tried to get a bunch of the Usports teams trialing this change before us if any thing.
  46. 1 point
It will put a whole lot of pressure on them for sure, but that is going to happen any way with the clock being started automatically. I bet it will be a gigantic mess the first time any team goes into hurry-up/no-huddle, and when it's late in a half. If the clock is running and the O is lined up, the ref crew will have to rush to set the play. The refs are going to have a big big adjustment in this. It's been pretty slack for a long time. Same goes for when they huddle up after a play to figure out if they should've tossed a flag when they didn't.
  47. Those who are NFL devotees and look down on the CFL will continue to do so with these changes. They are effete snobs who are willing to put up with the grinding predictability of NFL games for the "benefit" of worshipping at the altar of the hype. Nationalism has something to do with my feelings, but it has to do with the differences. I believe all this will do is dilute the CFL game and alienate CFL fans without gaining much more NFL fans.
  48. 1 point
With the upright change, and FGs basically being XPT range or Hail Marys, If I was a coach, I would be practicing the on side punt every day and start running it out. If you're on the 40-25 and looking at a 46-yard field goal or longer, and if you have to go more than 5/6 yards to get a first, the onside punt will make a whole lot of sense. The automatic time starts as soon as the previous play is blown dead, which could allow an effective hurry-up or no-huddle team to paralyze defenses. I also don't think anyone is really looking at the slower game/teams either. We've seen lots of 5-8 minute clock eating drives in the past. plays that keep the clock running, with slow teams (like us) will take a lot more game time, rather than making the time it takes to play the game longer. I could see Quarters where you see 3 or fewer possessions. Especially if you are grinding a drive from deep in your zone. No it isn't. But I think this is a stepping stone. Some one said we are frogs in a pot of water and the element has been turned on. I believe this is a move to prepare the fan base for far more americanization of our game. Why would you push this through part of the approval process, not bringing it to the PA or the rules committee or CIS, this late in the season? If this was the main chunk of changes you were going to make, and you really thought it would make the game better, you would announce this during GC week. If you didn't think it would go well with fans, you would do it right after the GC. I believe the UFL came calling, and I think we will see more news of this nature or of merger/joint partnership etc with them before the start of the next season. Either GC week, or before free agency.
  49. Not surprised. Dude still can't comprehend the designated nationalized American rule, and is reviewing Streveler game film from 2019.
