I'm going to talk myself into liking this trade but I feel gutted to lose Laine. He's just special. But, fit and attitude matter.

Not at all. Laine is a great player, no doubt. But the Jets added a bona fide #1 center today. Jets fans WAY overrated Laine and are continuing to do so.

Center depth is how you win in the NHL. Scheifele PLD Stastny Lowry. That's how you ****ing win.

Okay, the Jets finally made a long-term deal to address a shortfall in their team, a centre. We moved from an area of strength, the wing, and added a piece that will mean out centre depth is set for many years. We have goal scorers and two way centres. We obviously need help in the back but we have a few pieces already and a few coming up. I feel like we should be a contender this year. We're better than Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa and Montreal. We may be better than Toronto too. This team will be a top 5 team for the last quarter of the season. I'm saying we come out of the northern division on the playoffs and compete to go to the Stanley Cup.

For this season, no, but we definitely did for next year. Scheif, Ehlers, Connor, Morrissey, Lowry have all been drafted and are better.

Two big things to be seen before I decide who won the trade; Do Laine and PLD sign with their new teams? My guess is we'll have a lot better chance with PLD's dad around. Laine could very well still be on the move and a rental for CBJ When they sign long term, how much? Sounds like Laine is gonna be expecting a huge payday, and he'll get it get it somewhere because of the "flashiness". PLD may very well be a better value . Could we have fit Laine's contact and keep key pieces? I doubt it.
    3 points
  8. Gotta love our size and skill at centre now. PLD won't score like Laine, but it's not like we lack the talent to score without him. PLD's all-around game is better than Laine's, and he plays a more important position. His fancy stats are very good too, for people who care about that.

But Stastny should be in your top 6. He's better than anyone else in the bottom half. So, you have a player that can take faceoffs, if needed.

That's three guys who wanted out and Rolso is not a top player at that. Wheeler, Scheifele Connor, Morrissey, Wheeler, Hellebuyck, Byfuglien, Little have all signed long term deals. JCon beat me to it. But every team will have some guys who are not happy with their situation. Grass isn't always greener.

Interesting article in The Athletic today grading the trade. Won't post it all, because it is behind a paywall. But one thing that was mentioning is that Dubois was in their their recent top 100 players and Laine was not. Here is how they grade this trade for both teams: Custance: Columbus: A- Jets: B+ Luszcyzyn - Columbus: B Jets: A- Pronman - Columbus: B+ Jets: B- They love Laine's goal scoring, which is a rare commodity. But his defensive play can be a liability. If we get Dubois from the playoffs last year, will have the centre depth with Scheifele and Dubois that teams dream about. Trade will ultimately come down to which team can sign who in the long term and which player can thrive with their new teams. https://theathletic.com/2341048/2021/01/23/nhl-trade-winnipeg-jets-columbus-blue-jackets-laine-dubois/

I've seen this nonsensical "we can't keep anyone" thing going around. Scheiffele, Connor, Ehlers, Morrissey. Just to name a few. Drafted, developed and signed long term deals. The draft and develop thing can and does work.

  20. Well since i called this trade a while ago. I'm happy with it Roslo like Armia has the chance to be 20g guy but it's not going to happen with Wheeler/Laine ahead of him and Laine still ahead of him. Laine on top line in CBJ now but whose his center? 🤔 Cap space? We save 1m+ Schief/PLD/Stastny/Lowry After 1 game Laine finally became the Jets best RW and never played for us again 🤷‍♂️ Trouba would have left any Canadian team if that matters.

I totally agree. My rational side says this is a good deal on both sides but my heart wishes he wanted to be here and score 50 goals a season. 14 days. He'll miss 7 games. 26% to make the deal work. No biggie because it comes out of Thompson's pocket. We don't need cap space this year, anyhow. I think it means that the trade could have taken longer and he would have been stuck in limbo.

The two week delay is going to pose some major problems for the Republicans: GOP was crying about the Dems "unfairly" rushing things through, and not providing Trump with enough time to mount a "adequate defense" Some more time is not going to help in that regard - there is no adequate defense for what happened. No lawyer of note, wants to touch this thing with a ten foot pole. The esteemed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed the papers calling for the impeachment of Joe Biden. You also have the impeachment of Donald Trump. The comparison is going to make the Republicans look like a joke, and serve to further highlight imaginary vs actual crimes. The Republicans biggest problem though..... is looming on the horizon: Watchdog Says Organizer of Capitol Protest Turned Riot 'Received Explicit Support' from 2 GOP Reps https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/watchdog-says-organizer-of-capitol-protest-turned-riot-received-explicit-support-from-2-gop-reps/ar-BB1d0nvz?ocid=msedgdhphttps://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/watchdog-says-organizer-of-capitol-protest-turned-riot-received-explicit-support-from-2-gop-reps/ar-BB1d0nvz?ocid=msedgdhp Trump planned to oust acting AG to overturn Georgia election results: https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/535510-trump-planned-to-oust-acting-ag-to-overturn-georgia-election-results “The President Threw Us Under the Bus”: Embedding With Pentagon Leadership in Trump’s Chaotic Last Week https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/01/embedding-with-pentagon-leadership-in-trumps-chaotic-last-week These stories are coming out on a daily basis. In the next two weeks, there will be many more. The full extent of Trump's attempts to overturn the election, the stoking of his base to "do something" about the "stolen election" and GOP complicity is becoming clearer by the day. The pool of potentially damaging witnesses and submission evidence grows larger, by the minute. Democrats will have the ability to showcase this stuff at trial, and put people under oath. I believe that this thing is going to morph into a trial of the Republican Party. Trump has thrown countless people under the bus, over the years. Now Republicans may have to think about throwing Trump under the bus, to protect the GOP party at large. Also the realization, that no matter what they do - Trump's gonna Trump. A real Hobson's choice here: Impeach Trump and deal with the enraged cult who are capable of anything and Trump in the background calling for civil war on the GOP, or a new patriot party or whatever passes as revenge. Acquit Trump despite the evidence and have Donald paralyzing things with threats to run again, and watch the GOP's reputation, as far as the donor class, swing voters and new demographic and young voters.....go straight into the tank, for a long time. Took longer than I thought......but Trump is now truly the Republican tar baby.

I just really really really think Chris Walby was something special and a guy that would never have played in the CFL, had things been different in the 80s (because he would have been an automatic NFLer...)

  27. Not sure it's Heinola love as much as it's a desire to get Niku out of the lineup. Heinola looked much better last year, as an 18 year old, than Niku did this season. Small sample size for sure, but imo he deserves playing time more than Niku does.

  28. Guys will always sign here. It's the guys we lose that we don't replace that is the real issue. So, they move Stasny to wing? Put Dubois on the second line. Just saying Wheeler has a huge say with what goes on with this team, it seems. Maybe too much influence on a certain coach. I'm pissed off but I'll be okay in a day or so....

It'll be very interesting to look back on this trade and judge which team came out the winner..That will take time and anyone rushing to a decision will most likely end up with egg on their face...As things stand now, I believe each player has his own strengths...we'll see by the end of this season whose strengths shine the best...GO JETS

  34. Pretty shocked but I guess it turns out the rumours regarding Laine's contentedness here were, at the very least, partially true. A real shame to lose such an offensive talent, IMO. But the return is good - and better if Dubois re-signs here in the near future. I was hoping for something higher than a third rounder for Roslovic but it is what it is at this point. This team looks lethal down the middle and that's crucial in today's NHL. I just hope whatever attitude problems Dubois had in Columbus stayed there. I don't think Tortorella is a good coach with younger players and Dubois didn't seem to be an exception. Looking forward to seeing him in a Jets jersey, anyway. He's a very talented centre.
    1 point
  35. Emotionally this may feel like the Selanne trade, but the return here is a legit 1B centre, not some prospects and pixie dust in Kilger and Tverdovsky. Selanne ended up in the HOF. We will see where Mr. Laine ends up. As was said earlier, not likely Columbus.

  36. also my info is you can have a concussion without contact. Kurt Warner video showing that Lamar gets no help at all from the offensive play designs . I would add that he had no time whatsoever, o line was awful.

I caught him couple times last year. I would have said he was 2nd maybe 3rd year Schief but gritty.

  38. 3rd for Roslo / Laine for Dubois if you break it down. Was hoping a 2nd for Roslo, but meh. Wasn't progressing with us. C always carry more value than W in real life (vs fantasy) but I do think we should have got a higher pick or a prospect than we ended up with. Neither team was in a great bargaining position.
