  1. I always find it hard to browse the CFL's official free agent list so I re-organize it by position for readability. Still lots of time until free agency opens so this list is getting smaller daily.

  2. Someone has to be the first. Honestly some of you need to stop fretting about the guy. He is chasing a dream, whether it's likely or not is irrelevant. When he's ready to come here get excited until them he's just another dude not on the Bombers.

  3. I think almost everyone is in agreement on this.... But nobody should slight the kid for trying. I'd be more than happy to see an honest to goodness Canadian, trained in the CIS, QB make it down south... If for nothing other than to show that the CIS is growing as a legitimate talent source.

  4. To be fair, I think Mike was referencing his football career in general not specifically the nfl. But either way, you seem to be offended by his choices. As long as there are stories like Warner out there its easy to believe guys will believe in themselves and chase their goals. And if Streveler can get an NFL pension, Elgersma has at least a chance

  7. I have no problem with Elgersma chasing and NFL dream but sooner or later he’ll be in the CFL if he wants a pro career at QB. I may be biased but I think the sooner he comes to that conclusion the better off he’ll be.

  8. Not true - Rourke was also trying his luck with the NFL before he ever stepped on to a CFL field. He wasn't getting much interest as a QB though (the Giants had him try out at receiver) so he signed with BC. Yeah he got more interest down south after 2 seasons up here, but it was not his original plan (hence his unexpected detour comments). Elgersma is actually getting more NFL looks than Rourke did at this point in their careers so it's not hard to see why he might chase that.

  9. People need to also realize Elgersma has proven nothing...shown nothing to make a team want him in the NFL...but dominated somewhat a lil bit in the CIS In all honesty big flipping deal..he could amount to basically what all cdn qbs prior to him did...zero The most recent cis dominant qb ...Ford has shown exactly that...he ain't good enough Training and evaluation in the U.S is do specific and so detailed and investigated from so many avenues and by talking to so many people involved with a player it would blow your mind...I see it with the athletes I work with. Rourke got some legit looks and some legit playtime in TC and not just against other scrubs who had no chance to make it anyway...and had success but again...nfl politics were his demise...and he had pro game film after his first go around when teams didnt even wanna give him a qb look Difference...u.s prep school play...u.s college career...u.s legit chance albeit with the CDN bias against him...and he got punted and that was that Only other cdn qb i can think of...Palmer, who followed same path as Rourke had a limited existence but it also wasnt enough Sure a guy can chase a dream...but also needs to be realistic..a big arm...the prototypical NFL qb body type isnt a garuantee...there are so many guys who possess what Elgersma has coming out of u.s college with u.s football training that teams will always put first..and thats the reality. I also wouldn't hang my hat on him here in cfl to be this big success...why would anyone? Its a big jump to make...and if there was a legit thought he had it...he would have been PR'd all yr in the NFL.. and that didnt happen either And this pinning in Canada to almost force this idea thst a Canadian QB is needed and great is ludicrous too..who effing cares...find and or develop the best QB regardless...birth certificate should have no bearing on a position..best player should tho

  13. all true. it would also be expensive and complicated to get the rights to advertise stuff like that from other leagues. It could also come off very poorly if not done well. and the league hasn’t done a great job at any thing marketing wise in ages.
    3 points
  14. That would require the cfl to actually market the league and that is something they refuse to do. Basically the cfl is Winnipeg. We are a bunch of small little cities combined into one. People in st Boniface aren’t the same as people in fort Gary. It’s up to fort gary to promote itself. Just like in the cfl it’s up to wade and crew to promote the bombers, there’s nothing they can do to help Toronto or Edmonton. It’s a crazy cycle. CFL needs to do more. They basically do minimum

  15. I think when we drafted Elgersma it was kind of a 'throw away pic' ... and it was 'loooong term' whether he would show up in the Peg at any rate...With that in mind, I would say we were prepared to let him playout his dream down south and wait until he and his agent make up their minds in which direction they want to proceed in....Looks like he's exhausted his first shots at catching on in the nfl ,and just a little more time till he makes the smart move and heads north.. ....I think we'll see him at tc and get to see first hand if he's got the talent to play professional ball and stick

  16. Sure, so here's hoping we find out the verdict by him coming here. Doesn't work out so be it, no harm. Over the many years we've experienced our share of disapointment in QB's that have some and gone around these parts. Nothing wrong with holding a bit of hope that he may be one of the answers in our succession plan at QB.

  26. I agree. I don't think he'll ever start in the NFL. But I'm not going to get my nickers in a bunch over a 23yr old who believes in himself. If he gets a chance to join a PR maybe that leads to a roster spot....and who knows from there. Again as long as there are outliers who make it happen (and there are). I can understand why he'd doing everything he possibly could to get it done as soon as possible. Playing in the UFL this year he will make more money than coming to the CFL. If he gets a shot to play in the UFL and turns some heads, maybe he gets another shot at a NFL PR. And then he's only 1 play away from a roster spot. Sure he can come up here and light it up and turn heads...but he'd be making less money than he would in the UFL. And every snap could be your last. So make 100k USD or 85k CDN. What would you choose? I know what I would choose.

  27. Again, we'll see. Maybe that's what Elgersma needs to do. Come up here, play well like Rourke did his first season as a starter in 2022 & then try again. Or go thru this continuos cycle of tryout after tryout for nothing. Until the opportunities dry up. By now, most NFL teams know who Elgersma is & what he brings to the table throwing in private workouts. They don't know what he can do in game conditions. He has to play.

  29. How about, if Nathan Rourke can't make it then Elgersma will never get an NFL pension. Rourke showed signs of brilliance in the exhibition season when he got his chance to play to no avail & he was a starter in the NCAA. All I'm saying that no Canadian & U Sport trained qb has ever started in the NFL. We don't have the competition or coaching needed to play in the nFL up up here. Most Canadian qbs can't even play in the CFL. We aren't a country that churns out qbs for both leagues. The difference between Elgersma & Rourke is that he knew he had a financial payday waiting with the Lions as he had already played 2 years in the CFL before he went south. His rookie deal was finished. Elgersma has an $85000 rookie Canadian payday waiting for him up here. Not as much incentive to sign with us.

  31. You gave it your best shot, you little couch potato. It's a pipe dream, not a career. He's made zero cents. We'll see how he does in the UFL as I expect that's where he goes. If I was Waltwrs, I'd tell him to come up here & offer an extra $40,000 at him in marketing money to make his salary $125,000 Canadian. At least give an incentive to come & sign a contract.

  35. Life changing money? You're talking like Elgersma has a chance to actually make it down there. When was the last time a Canadian qb who played U Sports started for any NFL team? This is now Year 2 for him & as Mike calls it, his NFL "career". I don't see much difference between Year 1 & Year 2. As Booch says, other than a training camp per diem last year, he's made nothing.
    1 point
  36. Yeah the quality is very comparable....The top 10..15 percent of the NFL roster player is elite and just the best of best...after that the quality of player os comparable and in many case inferior to top CFL players....but the politics of the NFL play a big role in that
    1 point
  37. I've seen a bunch of players and coaches in the NFL say that the talent gap between the NFL and the CFL is not huge. We don't have the top-tier outliers, and don't keep them when we find them, but average imp starter to starter it is way closer than people realize. The consistency of players, coaches, and systems here is too much for the UFL to overcome. Even though we see a lot of turn over with in the league each year, its still a lot of guys staying in the league and with similar systems. The top tier in the UFL is very good. The problem is that below that, it drops off a massive cliff.
    1 point
  38. It's a hard call for him, to be fair. He's 23, about to turn 24, and easily 2 years away from playing here or in the UFL. By the time he has the base amount of film and experience to get back to the NFL window, he is turning 28, and at the end of his window. UFL pay will be close to what he would get here, and each will be about equal to a couple of weeks on an NFL PR. He's still getting workouts, and he played well enough in PS to be on an NFL PR. If I was him, I would play in the UFL this year, and try to make an NFL PR out of camp. I'm sure he would get a camp invite from someone. If an NFL PR offer doesn't come at that point, sign up here. With the coaching down south, and playing against that level of competition in 2 camps plus the UFL, he would likely be at the same level as a 2nd year imp qb out of camp. If not higher. Still plenty young enough to get good money and win a spot here. And still have a bit of long term NFL hope. I also think that is the best-case scenario for us. The seasoning he'd get in NFL camp and pre-season is far greater than he would get doing the same here. He grew up playing Canadian ball; the nuances are not so far removed for him. The worst case, for us, him and the NFL dream, is he doesn't get an NFL camp invite or ends up on a team that only lets him hold a clipboard, then sits and waits for an NFL pr offer that isn't coming and burns another year, while also not getting reps in the UFL. But even in that event, it isn't terrible for us if he comes up then. You sign him to a long-term deal and lock in cheap.

  39. based on his pedigree....where and what he came from...his BC as QB....His options were exhausted when Green Bay let him go and nobody picked him up by mid point of the season when all teams had a good grasp on their QB situ's and who what was available that was better Reality is a bitter pill sometimes...But he has the trifecta of "no legit chance in hell" attached to him...Canadian....Canadian trained...Undrafted.....no chance in hell...Plus he has an additional one...he's a QB who plyed his trade in the CIS.....Never...ever gonna happen for him...ever

  40. Elgersma, and probably other NATs as well, would already be here if the CFL didn't have the ridiculous 3 year contract for crap money on NATs. UFL pays QBs up to 100k USD iirc. EDIT: 64k minimum contract with some making 200-400k. I would think Elgersma would be on the lower end. However, we just saw the UFL MVP sign with us to be at best 2nd string. I can't imagine that Elgersma has more earning potential that he does in that league.
    1 point
  41. No kidding. The guy is 23 years old. One opportunity down south could be life changing money. He hasn't said a negative word about the CFL or the Bombers and he's just exhausting his options.
    1 point
  42. Yea I was thinking more understanding the game better at the CFL level. And while I'm at it I really hope we utilize our 2nd string QB this coming season more than short yardage snaps. I just can't get over the absolute relunctance in doing so. I'm not suggesting pulling the trigger everytime ZC struggles, I'm suggesting being way more strategic with the back up QB other than hat on backwards signaling in plays trotting out onto the field for 3 and inches fall forward and being ready to go if ZC gets blown up.

  45. Schoen is damaged goods. Why even weaste a penny on him? there are better free agents out there younger & have twwo healthy knees. And even if he signs elsewhere & has a great season, his body is a ticking time bomb for something to go off. Walters needs to spend money wisely & not foolishly. Move the eff on, already.

  48. I don't understand the hills you choose to die on, sometimes. If he & the coaches think he can do it, then they'll move him over to Center or Guard. The guy can still play. No one says he can't. It's time to work in a new guy like Vanterpool at LT to protect Zach's back while he can help us inside. He can still perform outside as well.
