Ads on this site

Is it just me, or are there way more ads on the site now? I'm getting them popping up in the middle of threads now, and they're much bigger at the top and bottom of the screen.

It's only this site that it's happening to me.

I noticed the ads between posts.....it is not good.

Mine is half the page.

Yup I’m noticing them too.

I know everyone’s gotta eat, but this isn’t good. I’d much sooner donate a little bit if there was an option for that. This just compels next to use an ad blocker or stop visiting the site.

I always assumed everyone runs an ad blocker no?

Same. I'm not getting any pop-ups when I'm here.

Me either.

I notice the ads on Firefox mobile (they take up the entire screen), but at home on my PC I have no ads with Firefox / AdBlockPlus

Have looked into this a bit ...

Google has implemented a new feature called auto ads, where it basically uses AI/ML to try and better serve ads and placement.   I had turned it on a while back, but with restrictions.  I found this email from yesterday:

A few weeks ago we introduced you to a new, more customizable and powerful Auto ads. We tried to match your previous settings as closely as possible, and sent you a notification on your AdSense homepage about the settings you needed to review. Because you didn't make any changes to your settings, we applied our default settings for you.

As someone who works in software, this is something that really pisses me off.  You never unilaterally make changes to how a customers account works.   Most people never read those emails, and I almost never log into the account to see notifications.

These have been turned off.   Let me know if you are still seeing them.

Yes, they're gone. Thank you.

Same. It was just my phone.

Still on my browser.

Install Ublock Origin in your browser.

I am hesitant to complain about ads on a site I like unless they're very very intrusive. I noticed the change on my phone and I was like "eh that's annoying but whatever"

I'd second that...we don't pay anything to use this, so as long as Rich is getting what's coming to him, and it's not making my use of the site super difficult, I'm okay with whatever...

but if you ever put auto playing video ads that pop up and block my screen then I will raise no amount of hell.

Unrelated to this site but I hate websites that ask to send notifications, I wish there was a way to block every site from sending you a notification.

Don’t run the site to make money.  I’m happy to break even.     The ads do pay for hosting, software costs, prizes for Pick ‘Ems and Lock of the Week, and we’ve donated a pair of season tickets to allow those less fortunate to see Bomber games every year running the site.

So if they are detracting from the enjoyment of the site, I’m generally against them.

That’s rich.

Thanks Rich! Appreciate the site and if you ever decide to open it to donations I’ll be the first to pony up some cash!
