SASKATCHEWAN @ MONTREAL

Game Day notes - Saskatchewan at Montreal

Only four clubs - BC, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto - appear to be starting the same QB in Week #1 in 2017 as they did in 2016 (Jennings, Mitchell, Reilly & Ray)

The average CFL player enters 2017 at 27.4 years of age and carries 2.9 years, and 38 career games with 23 starts

The average CFL veteran Quarterback carries much more experience at 29 years of age, 71 games played and 5.0 seasons

Calgary has by far the most veterans returning with 51 on their roster and just nine first-year players.

- Ottawa has the roster with the fewest first-year players with just seven out of their 51 in total.

- Saskatchewan's roster has only 29 players returning from 2016 with 14 free agent from other clubs and 12 first-year players.

- The Argonauts are in the same 'boat' with only 28 of their own back alongside 31 new players (free agents and rookies).

  • Winnipeg's growth is starting to show as they have 35 of their own vets back and just 16 new players (7 F/A's, 9 first-year).

Among the 18 players selected in the first two rounds in 2017, 14 of those players (78%) made it onto CFL rosters.

The West returned to dominate the inter-divisional play winning 28 of 39 games (one was tied), the most by one Division over the other in a 9-team CFL since 1993 (29 wins out of 40 games that year)

Game Stats

have added the following new "stats" and/or reports (with some definition):

1) QB Pressure

Defined: "Credited to a defender who either forces the QB to move off his initial drop back point to avoid contact, contacts the QB in the act of throwing, or has the QB in his grasp at the time an Intentional Grounding penalty is called"

Reporting: Compiled by defensive player and for QBs in terms of the number of times pressured.

2) Dropped passes

Treatment: Entered as a note into each play-by-play and for those plays where the drop is clear and uncontested. Reporting: Compiled for QBs in terms of the number of passes dropped; Receiver reporting to be primarily internal

3) Individual 2nd Down Conversion Defence

Defined: Defensive plays made that result in a failed opponent 2nd down conversion via: Tackles, QB Sacks, Pass knockdowns, Forced fumbles, Interception or fumble recovery.

Reporting: Compiled for all defensive players and league leaders reported the same as other defensive statistics.

4) Play-by-play entries and other reporting

Reporting: Printed play-by-plays will be much more explicit showing for example split yardage (Total, YAC portion) along with receiver depth for all pass attempts including incompletions. Play-by-plays will also include more "tags", notations for special plays such as Fake kicks, Challenges, Two-point converts and more. We have created an immediate post-game summary of key data that has in the past been unavailable until the following week. This will include much more in-depth breakdowns of many key pieces of game data.

A lot of classy Rider fans telling Durant to go f*** himself on the rider board. Not a great way to treat a guy who won you a Grey Cup and layed it on the line night in and night out. The loss looks g

  • If they are focused on Winnipeg this week, they might be in for a surprise when it's Montreal lined up against them.

Chris Jones is 5-14 in Saskatchewan. I could have done that for much less.

I kinda wanna post this over on RF in regards to their season... but it'd be like punching a wounded cat with downs syndrome

Those were 2 bad football teams. If the Bombers don't beat the Riders by 10 next week there's seething wrong.

Even with a fake TD "moral victory" and "better than last year" are making the rounds. Meanwhile in MTL they are are going to quickly discover they wont beat many with that offense. They used to rely on defense to patch things over but it looked last night those days are gone

If I recall correctly the Bombers shut down Carter fairly effectively last season, just have to shut him down for the first half of the game and he loses interest in the second half.

I'd really like Loffler to have a mid field meeting with Carter on the 1st.

Montreal should have at least kept Allan Michael Cash.

Didn't sound like there was much pressure on Glenn.

Toronto might have a good D this season.

Montreal's dl doesn't look good, especially inside.

Toronto's front 7 looks really good. Not sure about their secondary though.

Typical Chaps game plan. So frustrating to watch. Lions fans know what I'm talking about.

Ive read over at RFs that Jones is more coach than GM. He's proving to be an awful GM and his in game coaching decisions are sorely lacking.  A cold Young QB into the game at the 5 yard line with the game in the balance?  Clock management in the last minute?  Looked foolish.

3 bad calls and still no win. No QB pressure on old QB  5 and still no win. Chance to win on the last play of the game and still no win. Yep Jones still sucks.

Montreal's scheme was useless.

Most plays were 3 down lineman, and the splits were way wide. Almost at times directly over the tackles, and it's not like you need a lot of contain with Glenn at QB.

Shologan as well is not a guy you want as your nose, tacking up the center and guards attention. He just not big, or good enough.  If Saskatchewan was smart...which they showed they weren't they would have worked Marshall and Morris to death between the tackles. The back generally barely had a hand laid on him until they were in the second level...poor coaching and game management.

Why they let Cash go is baffling...I would love to have him on our line, but that being said I think Poop will change that in short order. Man that guy is fast off the snap and in the linemans face before he is set, if he hasn't already shot the gap

The Riders OLine will be tested next week. Bombers are solid up front.

And kind of gross listening to TSN pump Glenns tires, some better hands by the dbs and he tossed a few ints last night. Lots of dink and dunk passes by Glenn but he never looked like a guy who was going to beat anyone.

Pretty typical early season football game, both teams looked like garbage. Always nice to see the Riders taking a pile of undisciplined penalties too.

in THEORY.........but I thought that last year, too, with the upgrades we made......so, I'm taking a "wait and see" approach to our DL. #HeresHoping

Looking forward to Saskatchewan's schedule leading up to labor day they should be somewhat worried.

They now go: WPG-HAM-CGY-TO-BC-BC-EDM-WPG

Not to be a rider basher but they could very well be 0-8 leading up to Labor day if we don't crap the bed next week. I think our bed crapping days are behind us and really we have game film on them now and looking at what they have going there we should not be losing that game

Toronto I think has a better defense than Montreal and Trestman will cook a better game so of all those games coming up that could be the one they win, but I'm doubting it..

1-7 at best for them to start...2-6 would be shocking

Did you know that Glenn has almost 50 000 yards passing?

I think they brought that up every 2nd play.

I also noticed no mention of the lame ducks he tossed deep in the 2nd half...

I didn't have high hopes for our d-line because Shologan was not an answer and we planned to use Thomas in heavy rotation..Basically negating our ends cause they could be double teamed

He was floating around for weeks as a free agent.

I don't get that.  I was really hoping we'd get him. I guess we already had Nevis. at that point. don't know.

We've all watched him singlehandedly wrecking plays. Repeatedly.

hope the guy we did get is as good as Cash.

Morning radio in Regina today:

"Chris Jones is not a well liked person"

"No he is not".

Followed by assorted complaining about the reffing, mocking Nik Lewis, etc, etc.

I actually thought Montreal got a decent amount of pressure in the first quarter, they were forcing his hand quite a bit. Did I hear correctly that McAdoo called 93% pass in the first half?

Saskatchewan is just a terribly coached football team. We should take them to the cleaners next week.

Als deserved that win since the CFL gave Sask a TD hat wasn't a TD.

KG and Durant were overall better than I expected.

SK OL gave KG time and he responded better than I thought he would to getting roughed up a couple of times. Usually you get to him once or twice and he just folds.

Demski had his best game as a Rider. But I am still not sold on Demski.

Well, not happy with the outcome but it is what it is. Oline played well, picked up the blitz pretty well and gave Glenn time. Typical Glenn outing, played pretty good but not great.  Heart breaker to see that field goal go wide. Not gonna lie, that one hurt.

Well, I loved the result and as Jones said, with 21 penalties and 3 turnovers you aren't going to win many games. I thought Glenn played quite well but did that look like "the best receiving corp in the league"?

the fact Dunigan said it could be the best of all time makes me never want to put his jersey on ever again. I have no idea how he could say that, considering some of the past corps out there. Stegall Simon bruce immediately comes to mind. But even past MTL/BC/CGY teams are better on paper, and then in actual games. Really shocked me he'd go that far.
