Bombers Training Camp 2017 - May 28

RHÉANNE M.

WINNIPEG, MB., May 11, 2017 –  The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has invited Winnipeg Rifles wide receivers Xander Tachinski (#73) and Brendan Naujoks (#74), running back Michael Ritchott (#76), and defensive back Andrew Ricard (#77) to take part in the club’s three-day rookie camp commencing Wednesday, May 24. The players will continue with the team through the first part of the main training camp.

Tachinski and Ritchott attended part of last season’s rookie camp, and most recently played in their third and fourth years with the Rifles, respectively. Naujoks and Ricard have both spent three seasons with the Rifles.

“The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have continued to try to invest in the growth of younger football players within Manitoba,” said General Manager Kyle Walters. “This will be a great experience for all of them to be on the field with professional players, and to continue to grow as athletes.”

Quarterbacks and CFL newcomers will report to Winnipeg and will be on the field for the opening of rookie camp on Wednesday, May 24th. Veterans report on May 26th and will begin practicing on May 28th.

The Blue Bombers will play two pre-season games:  June 10th at Mosaic Stadium in Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and June 15th at Investors Group Field against the Edmonton Eskimos.

Is that a Freudian slip??

Other than Dressler and Adams, who looked good during the 1 on 1s anybody else stand out? Personally I thought Lowder and Duncan made some nice plays.

The best observation I can provide from attending today: Medlock needs to step up his apparel wardrobe. Looked like Steve Irwin out there with his fishing hat on. Do better, kicker.

Agreed about Lowder & Duncan.

Couple other things that stood out to me were the number of over throws from Lefevour and Content got beaten badly at least twice.

I watched approx. the last hour...

Nichols was the best qb today from what I saw. Hit a few guys in stride for big plays in both the one on ones and skelly. Apodaca has a cannon and seemed accurate, but he didn't get a lot of reps. I thought Davis struggled when they did skelly. Lefevour was just ok. Took off and ran during the one on ones, which seemed weird to me.

Adams was a beast today. Made a few rookies look bad in 1 on 1s, and went over Randle for a nice long catch. Dressler looked good, but had an ugly drop in skelly. The only time I noticed Denmark was for a bad drop. Stafford looked good in 1 on 1s. He got open deep in skelly, but Davis badly underthrew him. Of the new guys, I thought Thorpe looked really good, as well as Duncan and Lowder. I thought Coates was the best of the Canadian receivers, but didn't see them get much action. Coates made a jumping catch down the sideline.

Not much to report on the dbs. I was paying closer attention to the receivers. The poor kid from the Rifles looked like a junior player.

I thought Virgil looked good in the little bit of 1 on 1s I watched for them. Corney looked good too. Very fast. Overall, I thought the OL did very well. Goossen shut every guy down that I saw him go against. Spooner got beat up a little bit, and Ekakite didn't do much of note. That's pretty much what I expected to see though in their first action against the big boys.

Adams if he's healthy is going to have a monster year.

The battle in the trenches is gonna be amazing this year in camp. I wonder if couture bulked up some more. Iirc he was like 276 when we drafted him and he came to camp closer to 290 but still wanted to fill out a bit more.

* the roster seems to be updated. Has couture at 297, corney 267 and butcher at 333. IIRc corney was 255 last year and butcher 320.

yeah Nichols and Adams seemed to be really clicking until he got hurt.  Let's hope he can stay healthy this year.

Large???  My Lord he's still growing, if the 13 lbs. he added is muscle he's going to be a force of nature, got to keep this guy around so he has time to develop his game.  Homegrown nose-tackle in the works.

We are all in agreement that Lowder and Duncan looked great. Duncan has speed to burn. Thorpe could be one of those guys that has a very bad first day of camp but then ends up being our best find. He had some bad drops today but flashed his potential

Other receiver observations (not necessarily new) :

Darvin Adams and Weston Dressler make hard catches look easy.

Clarence Denmark still has that corner route

JFG should be looking over his shoulder. Coates looked better. Runs much better routes. JFG shows effort but he was not getting open. Richards didn't look out of place at all. Thera-Plomendon looked solid but unspectacular.

If I had to pick 1 new import receiver to make the team right now I'd say it would be Duncan. He has burned many DBs and makes the catches look easy. Will be interesting to see what he brings to the table as a returner

My starting receivers today based on performance this morning would be Adams, Dressler, Denmark & Coates .... all impressed me. The 5th receiver would be a multiple choice guess . Nichols was easily the best QB but my #2 from this a.m. is Apodaca .... he has a strong accurate arm, maybe the best in camp

Good to hear that Richards hasn't been injured yet, and might even be a legit receiver. Maybe Feoli-Gudino hasn't had enough pressure to make him jack up his game. I'm hoping that someone will separate himself from the pack of NI receivers.

I forgot to mention him. He got open and made a few nice catches in the 1 on 1s. I had zero expectations for him coming into camp.

BBlink, chaos monkey and myself are behind Dancing Gabe.

Not to sound like I know what I'm talking about but Matt Coates looked good today too.

As far as DBs go....Robert Porter was good.
