Regular Season Bomber News & Discussion

Training Camp is over, the roster has been set, and the biggest Q is who should MOS start at QB.

The Bomber Brass are comparing notes on that and have yet to decide so its not clear cut by any means. The default is Ross by a nose but we could have 3 legit thoroughbreds in our stable all at once.

I personally believe Steveler has the most upside based on pure talent, scrambling pizzazz, and the ability to see the whole field. He is also the most likely to turn the ball over and make gigantically good plays. Ross will protect the ball best and run the short game well.

Ross may have played the most regular season downs but Bennett has the most experience especially in the Bomber system. I can see us saying later in the year "why didn't we start using Bennett earlier?" He is my pick for short yardage QB but I would be happy with Steveler in that role too.  My best guess: Ross starts but Steveler comes in as soon as Ross has two or three bad series in a row.

While I like Flanders (and know he's on the 6 game IR), he doesn't bring anything different to this offense (certainly nothing that sets him apart from Demski).  Definitely happy to see a guy like Tompkins getting reps.

Sucks that Fenner is still down though.

Why do people keep bringing up Flanders when talking about replacing a receiver? He’s a running back who is a decent option in the short and screen passing game.

No clue .. though I know several people / posters who have wanted to get him on the field.  Doesn't do it for me.

The kid’s fast on the field..chasing, and now he’s quick off the field. Probably a good decision.

This. He is a far superior rusher than Demski.

Hmm this is not even kind of true, not to mention American.

Yet, on a per carry basis, Demski is among the league leaders.

Difference is the occasional time Demski runs the ball it's an enormous surprise to the D.  As a direct replacement for Harris there would be little fall-off with Flanders and a cliff before Demski.

But that's not really what we're discussing .. it doesn't matter if Flanders is the best direct replacement for Harris (which I'd argue he isn't given that Harris is a NI and we have both LaFrance and Augustine on the roster as well), we're looking to replace Bowman's "production"

So Tompkins - being a rookie - equals one more loss...? ;)

The issue with your argument is the bombers would never replace Harris with Demski, Demski is a change of pace back and slotback. The next logical replacement in my mind is Lafrance then Augustine. If neither of those work out we could reshuffle the roster and have Peterman or Simonise come in with Flanders starting at rb.

Thats what a lot of old school coaches claim...tho more suits a real rookie who is in his first year of ball...as opposed to a 4 year NFL vet who has logged significant playing time..

As a Flanders fan, I look forward to seeing what Tompkins can do.

I'm just happy we aren't inserting Lankford.

I compared their stats and you're right.

Despite Demski's smaller sample size as a ball carrier/rusher, the numbers say that Flanders is not "far superior".

You can't possibly even attempt to compare Flanders and Demski based off of stats. Flanders takes his runs like a traditional running back, while Demski takes his off of sweeps, end around and trick plays.

That's not entirely true either .. Demski has lined up in the backfield with some regularity this season.

Whoever replaces bowman is no going to be a primary target anyway... need a blocker and someone with sure hands

Flanders receiving

definitely very reliable receiver.

gp   target     receptions yards average long  touchdown       yac

18      49            42            354       8.4    33        3                   241

easy to see why they keep him.

Most of Demski's runs whiile lined up as a running back have been up the middle.

Well I for one was hoping it would be Thompkins who got the reps when Bowman was dealt. Felt he showed some good things in the pre-season including the penalty he took on the block coming back to the line. Yeah it's a penalty, but you know a guy who is willing to do that is not going to slack off when he gets a chance.

Flanders as a receiver would just be a less glitchy version of Ryan Smyth.

I don't think even Chris Jones is stupid enough to replace a 6'5 wr that primarily plays the Z position with a 5'7 rb tbh.
