I'm currently teaching middle years statistics. If they would interpret the poll in a similar manner they would get a failing grade. I've taught statistics as far down as elementary school and I'd be disappointed if they couldn't understand how the headline and interpretation aren't in line with the poll question and results.

This is kind hilarious, in a pathetic way. Lindell offered $5 million to anyone at his cyber-symposium who could disprove his election fraud claims and someone took him up on it. Proved that Lindell’s data was total nonsense, and then demanded payment. The courts just upheld this as a valid contract and ordered Lindell to pay. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/20/politics/mike-lindell-2020-election/index.html I will never understand what compelled Lindell to go down this road. Was his business model failing to such an extent that he figured the publicity, however negative, would boost his sales? Or is he a true believer?

You are a sucker for punishment. Nov 24, 2017: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/justin-trudeau-labrador-residential-schools-apology-1.4417443 Standing before an audience of hundreds in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, on Friday morning, Trudeau said the apology was long overdue, and a stain on the relationship between the Indigenous people of Newfoundland and Labrador and those non-Indigenous individuals who claimed to be educating them. "The treatment of Indigenous children in residential schools is a dark and shameful chapter in our country's history," he said in his address. "For all of you — we are sincerely sorry." On another note: Bolded letters are mine: The system had its origins in laws enacted before Confederation, but it was primarily active from the passage of the Indian Act in 1876, under Prime Minister Alexander MacKenzie (Liberal). Under Prime Minister John A. Macdonald (Conservative) the government adopted the residential industrial school system of the United States, a partnership between the government and various church organizations. An amendment to the Indian Act in 1894, under Prime Minister Mackenzie Bowell (Conservative), made attendance at day schools, industrial schools, or residential schools compulsory for First Nations children. Due to the remote nature of many communities, school locations meant that for some families, residential schools were the only way to comply. The schools were intentionally located at substantial distances from Indigenous communities to minimize contact between families and their children. Indian Commissioner Hayter Reed (racist dismissed by Liberal Clifford Sifton) argued for schools at greater distances to reduce family visits, which he thought counteracted efforts to assimilate Indigenous children. Parental visits were further restricted by the use of a pass system designed to confine Indigenous peoples to reserves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Indian_residential_school_system#:~:text=Under Prime Minister John A,government and various church organizations.

Going away from the point a bit, but sparked something related to trying to put some polish on residential schools. This from former PC MP Dorothy Dobbie (also former President of Wpg Chamber of Commerce and Order of Canada receipient): Basically, residential schools weren't so bad because other children had it rough too. I cannot understand how people on the right hold these views. I believe she was also an ardent supporter of Pallister and Lagimodiere when they towed out the "good intentions" B.S. Yes. Angus Reid skews right. EKOS skews left. These are not state secrets. The fact is that TN totally obscured the results of the poll by supplying a totally new question to fit their narrative. The question was not, "Are you in favour of defunding the CBC?" It was actually “the Conservatives would still maintain my support/interest if they adopted: Defunding the CBC completely.” The TN headline said: "Majority of Canadians support defunding the CBC: poll" Are you actually incapable or recognizing the dishonesty here?

Yikes... I mean sure you can draw parallels with other boarding schools etc.... but the white kids weren't taken away specifically to "teach" their heritage out of them. Residential schools were all about eradicating a culture. Small wonder some of the problems on reserves exist.

A standard 'gotcha' response back: Hey fill your boots buddy. I can't help if these facts don't fit your narrative. For some, the strategy is to use well meaning words (Facts, Evidence, Objective, Neutral, Centrist, Moderate, Democracy, Proponent etc etc etc) for nefarious reasons. It's a great strategy to use because it really helps convolute the discussion, always remaining slippery and never really revealing their true thoughts. When/if they are finally backed into a corner, you do see a bit more of who they really are. None of us are perfect (except me of course) but I find some, more than others, are way past the curve of adopting this strategy on a consistent basis no matter the issue at hand. We're a weird species.

    The Environment Thread

From the comments section on a WaPo editorial criticizing Biden's EV adoption rules: Beautiful! Q: I'm thinking of replacing my electric car with a fossil fuel car and have some questions: 1. I have heard that petrol cars cannot refuel at home while you sleep. How often do you have to refill elsewhere? Will there be a solution for re-fueling at home? 2. Which parts will I need to service and how often? The salesman mentioned oil in the engine and timing belts that need replacing and a box with gears in it. What is this? How much will this service oil change cost and how often - and what happens to the old oil. 3. In a petrol or diesel car, do I get fuel back when I slow down or drive downhill? 4. The car I test drove seemed to have a delay from the time I pressed the accelerator pedal until it began to accelerate. Is that normal in petrol cars? 5. Is it true that petrol is flammable? The petrol and diesel is so dangerous, that you can only buy the fuel at a special filling station, and not anywhere (hotels/ Car parks/Home Work)? 6. I understand that the main ingredient in petrol is oil. Is it true that the extraction and refining of oil causes environmental problems as well as conflicts and major wars that over the last 100 years have cost millions of lives? Is there a solution? 7. I have also been told that you have to transport oil all over the world to turn into petrol or diesel, and these ships have in the past damaged the environment by leaking the oil. Is that true? 8. I have been told that these internal combustion engines make a noise when you start them - so early starts can wake people up, and driving a lot of internal combustion engine cars in towns makes towns noisy? 9. Is it true people can steal the fuel from your tank? 10. What is the drop in range in cold weather? I've been told a car that does 45mpg can drop to 37 mpg in winter. Just curious on that one. 11. These petrol type cars generally stop on the brakes alone - so the brakes wear out faster - how long will they last compared to my current car which lasts over 500.000 kilometers

  37. Back in the early 90s I did a deep, deep dive into religion. I consumed whatever I could about many religions, and the history of those religions. I had ditched my TV and it was pre-internet for me so I had lots of time on my hands lol. One of the things I did was read the Bible from front to back. Like one would read a novel. I found it really changed my perspective. While I no longer consider myself a Christian there is alot of good and positive things that can be taken from the Bible. But to take it word for word as God's rule is impossible. A bit of a deep dive into the history of the Christian church will yield the same results. I don't see any issue with a Christian believing in evolution.

I can't vote Liberal unless Trudeau removes himself and I can't vote for any party like the Cons that denies climate change led by a little shite that would sell his soul ( and maybe everyone else's) and join forces with what ever moronic movement that will get him elected. So I am limited to 1 party before an election is even called.

any Lasso fans here? This week's episode, IMHO, is arguably the best in the entire series so far. Two weeks ago, after watching the Succession ep that we've all been waiting for, I said "this is the best episode of TV I've ever seen in my life", and after watching this week's Lasso I said "I've never enjoyed an episode of TV as much as I have this one"..... we're really in a golden age of prestige TV.
