Who is the Bombers' defensive player of the year so far?

Houston and Willie both had great starts but have leveled off as of late.

To me, no one has really stood out.

I might be tempted to say Jeffcoat... the defense is just different when he is in the game...

He's still unknown, that would just confuse the football writers as they would think Matt Nichols is a stupid choice for MODP.

Nichols would be a good choice too... I'm pretty sure he was a CFL all-star in both his first two seasons so I would hope people know who he is by now.

What’s with TSN actively assigning homer play by play people to games… since Cuthbert left it’s like they gave up trying to find and develop competent people and just replaced it with blatant bias.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but Rod Black just went nuts over whoever was winning.  Once the Bombers were good again I didn’t mind him so much 😏

it's about TSN being cheap... Why not have Marshall Ferguson do a west game or Farhan do an east game?... well because that would cost TSN money to fly them over instead of just using who is already there

How is this for a bad football take. The Bombers are better off finishing second. I think our chances are better beating the Riders at home and then taking BC on in a dome where Zach is nice and cozy. The way he has played in cold weather lately, I kind of feel we lose out on home field advantage against the Lions anyways if the weather is bad.

I don't hate this take... but winning the division and getting the bye is ALWAYS the preferred option... IMO, this is the worst case scenario and still provides a reasonably good path to the GC

Not at all. They were trying, and Brinkman looked properly worn out in the 4th. But if you can look back at the game and see any run blitzes or the schemes we usually have, then your eyes are better than mine.

I don't know specifically what they were scheming... but if the defensive game plan wasn't heavily revolved round "let's stop Oliveira"... then I don't know what your D coaches were doing all week

This is sort of continuing the discussion from the Bombers' season thread, but I thought that discussion of the Argos roster this past Friday and the reasoning and strategy behind it was more germane here.

I know that most of us would've rather seen a competitive game instead of having the Argos treat Friday like a Preseason (and make no mistake, they did) but consider it from our side and you quickly realize why we'd do this on the road, late in the season and against a team we may see again.

The Argos 6-game has: Daniel, Amos, Muamba, Gittens, Haggerty, Carnell, Bladek and Johnson

Our 1 game list had: Oakman, Peters, McManis, Cage, Phillips and Richards

That's 9 nailed-on starters (and 2 others who although they're starting calibre, we likely won't see them). And maybe as many as a dozen that could start and we (or anyone else) would be happy to have them. And they are mostly who are starters of All Star calibre and a few are those guys who have displayed that Big-Play Gene.

And of course, the Big one: we sat The Chad and played 3 quarters of Dukes, a quarter of Scott and a final series of Dukes. Exactly like we did in the preseason against Hamilton.

And we hid our playbooks. I didn't see a single play that I hadn't already watched this year. This is very atypical for us. Dinwidde and Mace roll out new things by the week. I didn't see a single blitz get disguised and I'm fairly sure we didn't do any of our run-blitzing (part of why Olivera ran so effectively on us all night).

(as an aside: I feel better about our backup situation now. way to early to see if he has or will develop starter or even elite traits... but you guys played your defence close to your vest too... I had presumed that you would go after Dukes early and often to shake him up. Looked more like Hall was saving that for when it gets real and just daring the kid to make completions against you if he could)

As for the Bombers, perhaps it's a case of playing down to the perceived level of an opponent (ie: they saw that it was a heavily rotated Argo team that didn't need a win) but they did not impress. Even Olivera. You can't fault anything he did because he can only play against what gets set in front of him, and he did it very well. But there was no scheme whatsoever in place for him. This was a one-off.

Takeaway: we're leaving with a loss, but with a sense of confidence. Because if these two teams are fortunate enough to play each other again, the game will be very different. And on that day in November if they face the actual 2023 Argonauts, the Bombers will have to do much better than they did Friday night.

I actually agree with a lot of what you said here… but this idea that the argos didn’t “scheme for Oliveira” is total BS… you think the team just rolled over and let him run for 160+?… you’re just trying to make excuses because the run defense had no answer for the top back in the league

Lion's have a soft one today going against the vaunted green guys....IF we drop this one tonight AND the leos pull off an upset (ha ha) we're going to be scrambling for position......I would much rather have them playing us at IGF than us having to play in their friendly confines....A lot of conjecture here AND a lot can happen from now till the end of the reg. season ...so it's 'JUST WIN BABY' starting tonight

no matter what happens tonight... Bombers still control their fate... 3-1 in the last 4 (as long as the 1 isn't against BC) is good for first... that said, starting with a win tonight would be preferred

Habba for one of Jackson, Clements or Cole would work but apparently a fullback who blocks on ten snaps and two back up linebackers to play teams is key.

How about this... without trying to rile up the masses too much... Keep Haba on and dress Burtenshaw... scratch Jackson and Bennet... seems like a net positive to me

Only problem is that we have, historically, played down to the level of our opponents.

I hope we come our and absolutely kick the **** out of the Argos but I will not be surprised if it's far closer than what it should be.

counter point... Bombers haven't lost coming out of a bye in like 3 years... Bomber haven't lost back-to-back games since (I'm guessing) 2019

Absolutely Haba did a great job when he has been in this season. I will be watching his run gaps closely this week. Not because I think he is doing anything wrong there or anything, just to see if maybe that is a reason we have been sitting him?

He has 3 sacks in four games... so I'm sure it can't be that

    1 hour ago, Noeller said:

It had nothing to do with someone trying to pluck Haba is all I'm saying. I would bet money that with Jeffcoat dinged, they just wanted to give him a rest day and let Haba get some reps. That I'm on board with... but it has nothing to do with some other team trying to steal him away. The vibe I'm getting from a lot of you is that Jeffcoat was good enough to play, but they needed to get Haba on the roster to keep him from jumping ship, so they sat Jeffcoat to do it...... there's just no way that's true. If Jeffcoat was healthy and needed this weekend, they would be playing him and Haba would continue to be on the PR, as with last week. There's no conspiracy... I'm guessing just a rest week for Jeffcoat, and nothing more.

I know that everyone think O'Shea is officially tied to Jackson... but if Jeffcoat was totally healthy and we "had to" roster Haba... I'm sure it would be (Damien) Jackson coming off

    That's just projection.

I thought they played without any extra emotion last week. They simply beat the crap out of the Riders. Didn't engage in any nonsense but crushed the pathetic team from Regina.

Nye was emotional, like Ballsy, crying at every turn.

Ballsy was suspiciously quiet during and after the game last weekend... can't imagine why... I guess he was still busy losing his mind about how Jeffcoat didn't get suspended for a hit on Brandon Bridge 6 years ago...

Yup a few will have some explaining to do.

I’m constantly amazed how BO keeps the pace with his style of running. I’m guessing he has adopted the mantra of our man Milt that your body is your temple. Treat it as such.

Is it just me or does Brady seem like he’s running faster over the past few weeks… he’s always had the power but seemed to lack speed in the open field… recently he seems to be outrunning more guys

Where's the rider troll @GreenandWhiteforLife?  What's your excuse today?  Your melon head team scored 6 pts and all in the first quarter.  After that your offense did jack ****.

Actually I know what the excuse was... Dan Clark wasn't playing today. He would have been the difference in the entire game

Had a laugh about that… this dude disappeared real quick 🤣

Those 2 OT losses go the other way and we are coasting to 1st like the Argos. In theory, might be better off not to?

3-2 down the stretch (as long as one win is against BC) guarantees first in the west… and that’s assuming BC goes 5-1

To be fair we have often wasted a di on offence. Remember Flanders being a di over and over again not to see the field once?
Wonder if Hansen is staying on the ir. That’d be really weird after two weeks of full practices.

there was a receiver last year (name slipping my mind... Tavaris Harrison??) who DI'd for two consecutive games and I don't think he played a single snap in any phase of the game

I just see a team that could use meaningful depth on the DL pretty badly and they refuse to make the changes to get it.

I can't help but imagine what a 4th quarter Jeffcoat would look like when he's only played 60% of the snaps up to that point

    Maybe not quite ready?

people were ranting and demanding Darby, then he goes to injured list.

there are things we do not know. Specially injury info. Makes the insulting comments directed at the team, and O’Shea seem silly,  and probably driving some people away.

Make your point, and move on.

If he wasn't ready he would be staying on the IR... even just for 1-game... moving him to the PR says he's healthy but they aren't rostering him... I've said it before, I don't hate the roster decisions as much as others... but I absolutely cannot understand why we are not using more DL... our defense has been at it's best when we do that...

I disagree that it was maybe one of those times. It 100% wasn't. Away game, down a score being put into easy scoring position is never the time to take a penalty.

I was watching a montage of the late hits Zach has taken. And a perfect example of a good time to take that kind of penalty and absolutely try to get back at someone was the Simone hit when zach was in SSK. His OLINE should have ripped his head off. Early in the game/season.

I agree... I think if the game was out of hand, either way... the response would've been much different

Manlihood in football is measured by your performance on the field. Their are no wusses playing football. No one has anything to prove. They don't have to do so. It's a violent profession by nature, and just being on that field takes a lot of cohones.

yeah, I know... I was poking fun at a couple of brilliant takes calling the Bombers "pansies" or "wusses" because no one took a stupid retaliation penalty
