Sucks for Lawson but not particularly concerned unless it's long term. We need to be good at the end of the year and we are still a great team that will win football games.
my only concern is that we'll continue to roll out Thomas and Schmekel at DT consistently... rather than use the ratio in other areas... if the team plans to start Ford and Kramdi on D... that's already 8 Canadian starters without a DL.

I think that last year we were wholly unfair to guys like Schmekel given their rookie status. Rarely does a NAT rookie jump off the page in their first year and the learning curve is much steeper for the guys coming out of the CIS. That being said he was rostered and was thusly fair game. However, I don't believe a NAT out of CIS should written off in their rookie year. These guys come to us more raw and less polished than recruits from down South and require some patience. Schmekel obviously put in the work this offseason, and I am glad he is looking better so far because we really need him to be.
I agree. Schmekel had a great game, but I really thought Garbutt and Rivers showed they can play in this league.
The problem with Schmekel last year is he had no business on the AR... that's a failure on management for not bringing in a veteran competent Canadian DL to take some reps... or a failure on the coaching staff to not adjust the ratio or take advantage of the nationalized American rule... either way, Schmekel should've been developing on the PR while continuing to "practice hard"... not playing actual games

12 hours ago, DTonOB said:Sure. There's a good 30-45 minutes a day on the 680 CJOB Sports Show with Christian. Plus training camp hits in sports at 625, 725, 825, 925am and 325, 425 and 525 pm. And we'll have two hours pre-game Monday starting at 1:00pm. We've hit all those topics over the first 10 days.
Since I've got some time sitting in Regina:
1) We've seen Shayne Gauthier + Kyrie Wilson / Kyrie + Brian Cole as the LB combos post-Bighill. John Petrishen + Tre Thomas has been another duo from the start. Anyone else isn't getting a ton of work.
2) Liam Dobson at left guard and Eric Lofton at right tackle every day so far. I think Ted Wyman was the first to touch on it on May 12. The only time it wasn't Dobson a LG was the last day because of injuries to Eli and injury/day off for Kolankowski. Dobson shifted to center for that one.
3) Michael Chris-Ike is slowly getting more action in a FB/TE roll after his late arrival. Gabe Wallace was getting first-team reps with the injuries to Neufeld and Eli. They are by far the closest to making an impact early in the season. Clercius is down around the 3rd group of receivers. Kalra is much closer than Vlahogiannis. And Leroux is 100% going back to school, so apart from 1 day where we talked about him, we'll catch up with him next year. Gassama and Hubert appear far down the pecking order.
4) 1st team has been Haba and Fox since day 1.
5) KJ Hill never seemed to get above the third group. And when he got hurt and wasn't going to recover in time, they released him. Had he appeared with the first team like a Ravi Alston, Ontaria Wilson or Myron Mitchell there would have been more talk about Hill.
There were roughly 8 guys vying for return spots. They *might* be down to 4, but there are virtually no returns in camp. Without full-speed contact, they aren't worth much. Pre-season games are where we'll see who's who.
So it sounds like the middle linebacker spot is going to be Gauthier, Wilson or Petrishen to start the year… I’ll be a little disappointed if it’s Gauthier because that feels too much like a “we’re familiar with him” type of pick… I hope Petrishen or Moses really stands out and forces the coaches to start one of them game 1

He started because ford wasn’t here. Kramdi isnt going any where, and he’s the ideal guy to have as the back up db and package guy.
Ford plays corner and Kramdi plays SAM… Kramdi won’t be backing up Ford… I actually think there’s a good chance both are starting

There were plays even before that if made, or appropriate healthy players were actually playing (both sides of ball) we at that point are walking away with that game and that TD is a moot point...
For sure... it wasn't just one play... but going back to the point @Colin Unger was making... despite all the mistakes the Bombers made in that game... it still could've been ended on the spot if we knock down that 3rd and 5 wobbler
Same with 2022... despite the poor all around game the Bombers played... they got the ball back with a minute left and only needed a FG to win it... both games were there for the taking

Houston pooched the winning TD toss...poor recognition and it cost us...Rose makes that play
True... but if Houston makes that play, it's likely going to OT... if Parker makes the previous play, it's game over
13 minutes ago, Colin Unger said:If Gautier starts at MLB by my count that's 11 Canadian starters in week 1. I wonder when was the last time that happened in the CFL. Would be kind of a neat achievement to see them start 12 Canadians and 12 Americans.
just curious how you get to 11... If Gauthier plays I count ten potentially ... Gauthier, Kramdi, Ford, Lawson, Oliveira, 3 OL, Demski, and Woli

Crazy to think if Houston makes one play we still would have won.
I believe it was Parker that got burnt on the 3rd and 5 shot...

If Holm doesn’t miss the assignment forcing Bighill into a “second too late” back-up coverage over the middle on that Montreal TD……
If Collaros makes the proper check down read to Demski on the goal line instead of underthrowing Lawler by 6 inches for a crushing end zone pick…..
If Willie J doesn’t overrun contain on Fajardo on 2nd and 19 and make a sack instead of a 15 yard scramble to set up a manageable 3rd and 4 on the last drive……
If that 3rd down deep pass gets knocked away….
If that game winning TD pass is 6 inches lower and hits the turf or 6 inches higher and gets knocked away…..
If…….
That’s why I will disagree with the “roster management” narrative peddled by some around here by and large. Our roster that has been put together has been good enough to go to 4 straight Grey Cups, something no team has done in over 40 years. In the end it wasn’t the player A over player B dressing in the 42nd, 43rd or 44th place on the roster costing us the game, it was mistakes by the stars who are no-brainers to be on the roster and who carried the team all year who just did not get it done on that day. Sports…….
this is all correct... but the point Colin was making is despite all of that... we still could've won the game with one makable play

Obviously huge thanks to Derek for coming on here with reports. Greatly appreciated.
Also thanks to Our Man Tait for his daily camp reports. This one in particular is interesting as many of us were pleading to have Haba get more time last year... And hopefully he's on pace to break through this year....
This is a great article.... good to hear that Haba seems ready to take over Jackson's role... but I'm excited about Garbutt and Rivers too... having a three man rotation of Willie, Haba, and Rivers/Garbutt will hopefully cause a lot of havoc for opposing QBs

I don’t even see a problem with wavering if more information becomes available.
For example, early 2022, I still thought we for sure needed an American running back. Brady’s play totally took a 180 and I was glad to change my opinion.
Something like: Having no interior DL who could push the pocket and 2 gassed out DEs cost us the last 2 Grey cups. That’s a hill I’ll die on.definitely wasn't the only reason... but can't disagree with your point

Im very concerned about Bighill going into the season. He looked absolutely done at times last season with zero speed and missed tackles all over the field. And with Clements gone and Cole shifting to a different position the Bombers have shockingly shown zero interest in bringing in anyone else with CFL experience to even spell him during the season, let alone grooming someone to be his replacement(which will need to happen in the very very near future). This could be a major issue this season.
I agree with your concerns over Bighill... but the team is clearly looking to start grooming LB replacements... we have 5 new American LBs and 2 new Global LBs in camp this year... I'd expect one or two of those Americans to stick around and hopefully start earning some playing time.... plus Cole could still be in line for the WIL spot if Wilson has injuries... plus if I recall, I believe this Max Charbonneau kid out of of Ottawa comes with some pedigree and people were excited to see what he brings (I could be thinking of someone else)

Doesn’t even make sense. We have 9 potential Canadian starters already.
DT had 10 Canadian starter on the day 1 TC starting line up... I think we can safely assume (or desperately hope) that this will not be the game 1 starting line up... I wouldn't mind if we go 8 with Lawson and Ford potentially starting on D

Her contract expired, after that the Argos can hire whoever they choose and are under no obligation to provide any explanation for their actions. That's often the stark reality for workers in non-union environments, there is very little job security.
This is completely unrelated to the point I was making... Bluto is very confused why she would want to continue working for the Argos despite being harassed at work... suggesting the onus is on the employee to leave rather than the organization to rectify the issue

Well I do have questions about an employee who was so terribly maltreated that they apply to come back for an entire year more of the alleged S abuse.
so just to be clear... your stance on this specific part of the scenario is.... if someone was harassed at work, that person should be to the one to leave and give up on their dreams... with no onus on the organization to create a harassment-free work place.... if that is not what you believe, it doesn't show in your posts.

You can't complain about taking Manu in the 5th at 46 overall.
FYI recent Winnipeg 5th rounders include Chris Ciguneau, Kyle Borsa and Nicholas Dheilly.
This is exactly why I like the Manu pick... worst case scenario he never comes north and he is exactly like the players listed above... best case scenario, he shows up here in a few years and we have a very good Canadian that can play tackle...

"Jake Thomas Clone" says Barker... Poor Booch.
That's a very good thing... as long as you're talking about the 24-30 year old version of Jake...
I don't pretend to know anything about the prospects but some of the resident experts around here seem to really like Brubacher... I wonder if we could've drafted the second round like this:
13 - Clercius
14 -Chris-IkeBrubacher
17 - Wallace
20 -SamsonChris-IkeStill end up with WR, RB, OL, DL but potentially an upgrade at DL... just a thought

I'd be a lot less critical of these articles if they explained their rational a bit more - even if I don't agree with where they have a guy going, at least let me see the thought process behind it.
I think it would be especially valuable for Hodge since he does multiple mocks and some of his picks change drastically. Like how does he have a guy like Straker going from being his projected 3rd overall pick to 20th? Or how does he have Kevens Clercius jumping up 12 spots from 23rd to 11th?
totally agree with you here... this is Ferguson's complete write up on his projected 20th overall pick Justin Sambu:
Every year I seem to draft Winnipeg an interior defensive lineman, while nobody has really laid claim to being ‘next’ in the Bombers rotation.
Thanks Marshall... now I know exactly what kind of player Sambu is and why the Bombers would select him...

I've decided to watch old Bomber games wherever I can find them, as the off season continues to wear on me and I long for football. Here's my first contribution:
EDIT: I am pretty sure I was at this game, as a young man, as my dad was a season ticketholder in 1980 and I was able to go to most of the games with him. The 1980 Bombers will forever be one of my favorite teams of all time.
Montreal has a guy named Randy Rhino!!! RANDY RHINO!!! ... this is the greatest name I've ever heard... why have we never heard of this guy!?

Does Kliff Kingsbury deserve to be mentioned?
His list from from post-Kevin Glenn to pre-Matt Nichols... so that would be 2009 through game 5 of 2016 (I think I have that time frame right)... I believe Kingsbury was only here one year, 2007

For one possible answer, see the general (but not universal) difference in reaction to Andrew Harris’ failed drug test and the justification that it was a tainted sample/useless old school steroid no one would take/so minimal in reading it was effectively useless and the corresponding response to Leonard’s test refusal (and therefore unknown what if anything he was on) in Saskatchewan and all the PED Leonard comments.
Personally.. I always thought No Pee Leonard was a better nickname... but the other one seemed to stick for some reason

Sounds like they tried jump on (what is apparently) a social media trend... kind of funny but at the same time probably not a great idea to piss off a large group of the fanbase.
