They didn't give VAJ an extension with all that guaranteed money if they thought he would come back.

Could be they are not ultra confident that they would land him if he does come back. They threw gaudy (650k per) at him to stay last offseason and he walked away without giving it much thought. If he really loved the Lions org he might have mulled that over for a bit.

True, he's not contractually obligated to return to the Lions, maybe he lands in Wpg. after Zach retires.

    Toronto would be my bet.

But that is different- the ROI on giving Strev "Promo Money" would be very high.

Yea...the return on any players Promo money would be very high. Nothing sells tickets like winning. If you can exceed the SMS by half a million dollars through the use of promo money you can increase your win totals and thusly ticket sales. That is in effect the same and only reason a business runs promo...to sell more. Therefore, I suggest we pay all our players promo money for a lower cap hit, put a dynasty out there, and reap the rewards of outstanding attendance that comes from winning.

Yes but - there were a number of teams doing a much better job than Winnipeg was.

No doubt about that. Those lean years hit the community owned teams hard. One needs to remember though that the late 90s were an epic disaster for us. Ritchie and Taman at least put a respectable product on the field. Not championship calibre but there were some good years there.

Taman was the most bush league GM in modern CFL history.
Not all his fault mind you as the club was broke, and being run by the inept BOD.

If not for Milt, I sincerely believe the team would have folded by 2005, and if not for Wade Miller would still be a bottom feeder now, if even in existence.
In retrospect it’s amazing they made it through.

I don't think we would have folded, and I doubt we would still be a bottom feeder but the whole CFL was in financial peril throughout most of the 90's and early 2000's for sure. Taman did not have any kind of budget or scouting department to speak of. When the league stabilized and brought in the SMS it killed his career really because he didn't have a hot clue how to do the job properly but was better than most during a time everyone was winging it.

The way I read into it is the Bombers shud be able to retain any player they want to bring back - unless its a player like Hardrick who got a large pay increase.

Well it was mentioned that the reason we got Streveler so cheap was that he could earn a lot of money off the field in Winnipeg. I wonder if we threw him a bunch of 'promo" money?

Bad things happen everywhere after dark. Heck sometimes bad things happen at Super Bowl parades. Winnipeg is no worse than anywhere else in my opinion. Most our major crimes here happen in one specific area off Main Street that I wouldn’t recommend driving down those streets at night never mind walking. Downtown to me is entertaining. The homeless ppl don’t bother me, occasionally they ask for a smoke and if I’m feeling it I’ll oblige but if not, then sorry last one. Money? I just use logic when they ask for money. I’ll say here’s the thing everything is plastic now and I don’t see a bar code on you. One guy made me laugh by saying you can try here on my hand then he made a beep noise and said looks like it worked. I dunno. I’m not normal tho.

No you are bang on. To say Winnipeg is a **** hole because of a couple impoverished neighborhoods is kinda ignoring the fact every city has these problems. Just look at downtown LA. Hundreds of thousands of homeless have taken it over. Not too many ppl calling it a shithole tho.

  7. I live in Thompson Manitoba now, violent crime capital of North America. Moved from Winnipeg full time a couple years ago. Wouldn't live anywhere else. Love it here. Social issues ...oh yea..makes the North End look like a Christian retreat.

Like any other city tho it's contained to certain areas, even in a small city. Just stay away from those areas and enjoy the rest of the city. This isn't rocket science. Smh, at those complaining about Higgins Ave. Or Spence...wtf you doing there in the first place. Every city ever founded has some low track areas, and newsflash they are almost always bordering on downtown. Have some awareness, stay outta there, and quit bitching about it. Good lord.

If you can't find one redeeming quality, or even a reason why you are staying why stay?

You’re over the top with this.

He's either way over the top or is the most sheltered Winnipegger around. There is a ton of cool stuff to do in Winnipeg in the summer. I'm not huge on hanging out in any of the areas that our social issues create problems but really that's like 5% of the city. Where the hell are you riding your bike Mike? I do agree with him that my favorite part of a Manitoba summer is time at the lake though.

  9. 9 minutes ago, Geebrr said:

It isn’t. Downtown Winnipeg has major problems that need to be fixed.

It has gotten worse since the pandemic started.

Asking a bunch of millionaires who spend a lot of time in the biggest cities in North America which downtown they like least is a stupid bench mark though.

It is cold, dark, and empty basically any time they’re here.

Downtown (insert name of any big city) has major problems that need to be fixed. Just the reality around North America really.

I don't think that anything which I've said is controversial in the slightest.

This discussion is going a bit far afield, so I'll bow out here.

No one was accusing you of being controversial. Hypocritical maybe...but not controversial. You stated your feelings on visiting Winnipeg, I stated mine on visiting Toronto. I accept your viewpoint, you are suggesting mine and others are bit far afield...whatever that means.

It’s ok if you’re directly in front of the arena while there’s an event on.

Anywhere else, don’t stand still or talk to anybody, and for the love of god don’t pull your darts out whatever you do.

Yes, a cigarette habit downtown can get very expensive if you are a kind soul.

Whatever gets you through the night.

Same to you, but that's been my experience. Sorry if that hurts your feelers.  I don't see what you see in Winnipeg, but that doesn't mean you are wrong. When we live in a place we tend to give it the benefit of the doubt and grow accustomed to and then overlook the warts. You are doing the same with Toronto.  I saw the same social issues in Toronto every time I went. Weirdos and homeless all over the place, garbage and litter everywhere, and a general feeling of unease and being unsafe after dark. Could I have avoided this...probably...but you could do the same in Winnipeg.

The winters suck, but I still love winnipeg and manitoba in general. Wouldn't trade it in for a place like Toronto any day of the week. A matter of preference, I suppose

having visited Toronto over the last several decades (80s,90, 00s,10s,20s) it is shocking to me how badly things have fallen off.

I can only even put it in the nice place to visit category if you plot out exactly where to stay, where to visit and especially what areas to avoid.

Sounds familiar Bluto? It should but my post too is reality.

I think lawler will come down further after that year unless he has some crazy season, and then dalton will go up on his next deal. Imo 225-250k is going to be the new/old top end for imp wrs.

Lawler will need an 18 game season to cash in again.

...yeah and I believe he started his comments with the Streve signing....and he's right

Barker had some really interesting comments on that show. Alluded to teams using "promo" money to circumvent the cap. Not sure how or what this means?

Stated that he thinks Strev is a big upgrade over Brown.

Stated he thought Yoshi wasn't all that great last year and not as big a loss to the Bombers as what many think.

Just some real gold in that interview from a guy who knows this league inside and out.

It's on YouTube if you Google rod pederson Jim Barker. If people have 20 mins I recommend it.
