First, I'll say I don't see a lot to bash in this set of cuts either. The NI wr depth is a side effect of us trying to draft just teams guys for a couple years. But you are basically always in a situation of needing to restock NI depth at at least one position in the CFL.
That said, If you look at the argos of the dinwiddie time or the stamps previous dynasty, both teams would've had the last 3 years of roster turn over in vets in one year, and then some. Guys like kyrie and thomas would've been gone long ago. We aren't stuck on a lot of old vets any more. It's just a couple under achievers that get penned in now.
I also don't see considerable discourse. Last year was much more controversial. And the year before that. I see people discussing the cuts and questioning some moves, which is the point here yeah?
Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed in a couple moves as well but overall I like it. I don't think we needed to re-invent the wheel with our roster. The biggest changes we made this offseason will pay off once Logan gets healthy and Hogan gets his feet under him. We had a darn good team last year, and appears we will have one again, Our biggest flaws are mostly addressed and imo this is the best looking PR we've had break camp in a while. I get that Thomas and Wilson appear to be weird keeps this year, but at the same time if their play time is reduced I see no problem with keeping either around.

Bailey would make more sense than Weitz IMO, if we choose to roster the 2nd global. At least he would get some reps at DE. However, it comes at the cost of a Canadian and I'm not sure where we'd trim. 3 Canadian LB's, 1 receiver drafted and Peterson acquired in trade all added to the roster for 2025. That said, that's a lot of Canadian LB's.
Until they sort out the import LB's ( 4 counting Griffin ), I'm not sure what we're doing exactly.
Our DE's in 2024 were not good except for Jefferson. Adding Vaughters is great but depth? Yikes.
Pretty sure that Munier-Bailey will be on our roster sooner rather than later.

Our entire defense aside from Jefferson Gauthier and Thomas has turned over since 2022.
Kickers, receivers.
Not sure the emotional reaction to cut down day is warranted. But I guess football is too boring.I'm not seeing a lot to bash either. People are complaining about the lack of roster turnover without actually acknowledging that we have had a lot of roster turnover in the past couple of years. Always lots of emotion on cut down day tho, as guys that we have grown attached to from our own internal hype get let go and then we find out we were mostly wrong about them as they never make another team either.

Like $700 per week.
The decision on receivers has to be who fits the offense best mostly meaning who works best with the QB's.
Kind of in a bind if our returner isn't an offensive player so it would be nice if a guy like Stearns saw that as a path to make the team and refused to take no for an answer on getting reps on punts.
Return game is another reason that D. Mitchell may get the nod. He's no Janarion Grant, but he is miles better than his M. Mitchell.

His salary is the biggest thing against him. If he’s going to be a 5/6 guy we can’t be paying him to be a 2/3 guy. I feel like we have enough guys that can “get the job done” on the bottom of our depth chart that it’s pretty hard to justify the salary.
We've already paid a lot of his salary. What's left owing is basically minimum contract or even slighty less. At this point his salary is a non factor.

Dillon Mitchell needs to do something no? Tough time I think keeping him if he’s outshined by rooks and 2nd year guys. I think you keep the guys Zach likes regardless tho.
D.Mitchell definitely needs to up his game a lot, but it would take a pretty big performance from someone else to see him cut imo.

TIL Jake Thomas only speaks in the third person, and is REALLY hard on himself.
As he should be...you don't play until you are 49 years old without being hard on yourself, and being able to look at yourself from the outside in.

Given our previous camps it isn’t ridiculous at all. We’ve cut guys the day after a ps game who didn’t play, who played extremely well, we’ve failed to play guys enough to get the rust off etc
I think game action and TC action both count for sure, but we have the games for a reason. Yes, we've sat guys that needed to knock the rust off, a mistake that looks like it hasn't been repeated this year. Not every player can play his way onto the team in preseason game action but some definitely can and that is especially true in the trenches. The skill guys can be assessed pretty well without game action, but it's tough to see what kind of motors you have competing in your trenches in practice.
-
Camps have a second game for a reason and it is ridiculous for people to assume that anything is set in stone other than our star level players. Some vets are at home because we know what they bring to the table already, and some to shield them from injury, but players play themselves onto and off of the team all the time in game action (including this one) in preseason on every team every year.

As someone who has owned restaurants and mobile concessions, I cannot recommend enough that you avoid the dine in restaurant model enough. Restaurants are the one business I would never recommend anyone to get into. You can do everything right and still fail. There is so little margin for error because margins are so low. I had a restaurant that was doing around a million a year in business and it was profitable, but it was far from a gold mine. After all was said and done, with my wife and I working full time we figured it out that we were making about 9 bucks an hour for our time.

Placement be damned i want a guy who can occasionally boom one to flip the field. What's his nuts has no hope of ever doing that.
Booming punts is not something you really want to see often because most guys CAN actually outkick coverage if were to let them, however, when we are punting from our end zone and simply can't give up the single because of the scoreboard it would be really nice to have a guy who can uncork a 60 yarder and just pray that our cover team can do something about the return.

Case wasn’t in the first game, maybe he had to return home? Other wise we could’ve stuck some one on the ir who we know is gonna make it and doesn’t need the reps.
Nah Lawson was taking equal reps with Thomas and more down the stretch before his injury. They paid him top tier money, he’s likely gonna play more snaps than Jake.
Jake began the season getting the majority of reps and that completely reversed by the end of the season. IF Lawson comes back with the same game he left with, I would think that Jake will have a much reduced role in our defence. Of course, that likely takes a few weeks as Lawson just got back.

Lawson will 100% have to show he is fully recovered, however, I see no indication anywhere that he isn't.

Yea....not willing to hand anyone a job yet, but if he just does what he did last game I can't see how we can justify keeping Sheahan over him.

Anyone know what Bighill is doing? Hard to fathom he stays in Wpg. if he's no longer connected to the Bombers. Could see him getting into management, if he can get his foot in the door with a CFL team.
He's still working his 9 to 5 in Winnipeg. I would imagine he will continue to do that unless another team picks up the phone. Biggie moved here, lives here, works here, why would he leave?

Some mention in today's presser of Dillon Mitchell admitting he was unprepared coming into TC for whatever reason, that could be the kiss of death on a O'Shea coached team. Don't know if they got that comment from a story in the FP or Sun .
There's also this from AI header.
Dillon Mitchell, in the context of the provided search results, appears to be a football player, specifically a wide receiver, who has been criticized for being unprepared or lacking focus in some games. For example, the Oregon Ducks were criticized for being "unprepared and predictable" in a game, and Dillon Mitchell was singled out as a player who was targeted frequently in that game. Additionally, there's a mention of him being "unorganized," but it's not clear in which context
Unprepared could mean a number of things, but none of them are good. However, sometimes a person can be unprepared through training injury etc. At any rate we've paid half his salary already so it is almost guaranteed he's sticking around. Might mean we keep one more IMP receiver on the PR than we otherwise would have though. If he continues to be unprepared for some reason than his tenure with us will be short.

most likely...but you never know....trip to the big dance again and lose for much the same issues...or lose out in Semi's or WF again...for same issues....I'd have no issue with moving on...as should the Management have no issue...4 epic fails in a row...when will it end...our last cup victory was 4 yrs ago now...Personally I dont care if we "got" there again if we keep losing it for the same insane stubborn reasons....If we went and replaced the top dog...or promoted say a Younger or Costello from within....does anyone really think we would drop right into the abyss?...Highly doubt it...the culture and way things done here wasn't an invention and a whole new way of doing things created here...it's how good teams operate and we got away from it for a decade or so....part of that dry spell wasn't just incompetence and clown show stuff...some was just the way it goes...some was bad luck
I not saying can anyone, but if we fail again....and was preventable if not for the same stubbon reason's and not owning up to a ooop's admission....its time
MOS is safe unless we go sub .500 this year. He gets the benefit of the doubt otherwise. I'm not saying MOS is on a forever run but it will take a significant dip in the standings before they ever pull that trigger. Walters is far more likely to get canned then MOS if we were to just be mediocre this year, I know you don't love the way MOS does things but he has a lot of good will in the bank.

At the same age Dru Brown was the starter for Ottawa. He’s only 9 months older than Wilson. I don’t think there’s a lot of runway for Wilson to develop into a starter. A guy in his first pro camp looks more comfortable in the pocket. Would like to see some confidence from Wilson. Still a real hesitation to move the ball, then check downs to nothing because he held it so long.
I get keeping him for the first little bit because of the suspension and Streveler coming off major knee injury, but we should be looking for another prospect.I like what I saw from Artopoeus more than what I saw from Wilson given their respective development time. Wilson is a 2nd year guy but looked pretty hesitant.

Not to mention Logan, who is also a very good RB. I hope Cooley can add some value somewhere so we can keep him but I`m just not seeing how unless we can stash him on the PR but I`m seeing several good candidates for that as well that are at positions far more important.

Does when a punt bounces off his face and into the endzone for the other team.
For sure. We can give him SOME reps in practice, but being a good RB does not guarantee he can return well and I think a lot of people here seriously underestimate how big a skill shagging punts is.

I am sure he will get firat 3 games....if he just not grasping things or producing...he will be gone....But I will be shocked if he not rostered game 1 in some capacity
He was our big FA get, so I think he gets some opportunity before we cut him loose. Unless, his attitude is the cause of this then he might get walking papers but I haven't heard anything to indicate that. Seems he is just not adjusting to our offence yet. Maybe that comes, maybe it doesn't....but we will give him time I would think. He has been paid a portion of his salary already so keeping him on costs us about the same as a rookie now.

Who is they? A couple random fans on the Blue Bombers forums? Derek Taylor?
Pokey Wilson had 3 catches for 13 yards last preseason and our leading receiver got cut after the first preseason game. As a collective, we’re putting way too much stock in things like preseason yards, targets, etc. Especially with what we know about our coaching staff.
I totally agree. Not to mention that Mitchell has proven his ability in real games in this league. I`m certainly not going to suggest that D. Mitchell is a sure thing or anything but he`s a proven, productive receiver in this league. He will get a chance to see real game action before a decision to cut him is made imo.
