Dukes has a limitation that defences around the league found after he started the season on fire. Once they schemed to take his slant routes away, he simply didn't adapt by showing that he could make them pay for it down the sidelines or over the top. Can he add that to his game? I don't think it's a tendency thing (where he looks short and mid first) I think it's more of a Zip thing, or a lack thereof. He's still 26 so I won't say it couldn't happen but there isn't all that much that a professional QB can do to give himself a better fastball...
Having said that, he's still a better QB2 than what you have. Father Time is undefeated and Collaros doesn't appear young for his (advanced) age. It is within the realm of the likely-to-happen that your QB2 is leading your team this season.
Cameron Dukes is a young Fajardo without the Jesus Sprinkles. He can't make every throw and therefore has a low ceiling. You are way over rating him.

Strev is never going to be the 2nd coming of Dieter Brock. With his skill set he doesn't have to be. Will he ever be a bonafide starter in this league? Hard to say. However, he is a guy that can come in and win games if he has the right game plan given to him.

I think they got more out of a first and second year QB in Dukes than i've seen us do. I'm taking more of a longer term view. In the past 15 years is there a team that has developed more QB's than Toronto? Our one example is with Brown. Even the current regime has struggled with any other qb than Brown that it has tried to develop from rookie.
Why take a 15 year view of things in the CFL? Most of those years are not even remotely applicable to now. Different GM, different coaching etc. etc. Saying that Toronto is better than us at developing QBs currently, because of Collaros or Harris is nonsense. In the last 5 years we have developed 2 backups that either spend significant time in the NFL, or are now providing quality starts to another team. I would say our track record developing QBs is pretty darn good right now.

truth be told, I think if we do suddenly have a bit more cash to play with for a receiver, we’d be better off saving it for Pokey when he comes back
edit: let me clarify, I know he’s under contract if he comes back. I’d give him a raise for this year with an extension attached so we can actually lock a guy up long term and not do this song and dance every year
I’d also be pushing for Brady (especially) and Schoen extensions
That certainly makes sense as well. Hope we don't have a windfall of money left on the table tho. Love to get these guys wrapped up if possible too tho.
10 minutes ago, Booch said:I agree....forward thing and continuity with young guys is always smart....at least save it to see if he (Pokey) is the real deal tho and do a late season deal if he lighting it up would be my route on that...and if Schoen is back to being Schoen
I'm not against leaving some money back for extensions, but we need to spend because every other team is going to.

Kyle Walters might feel that way but Wade Miller is standing around drinking Booster Juice telling Kyle how much he cares about a home Grey Cup. Make no mistake, the stakes are high for Walters on giving us our best shot at our cup THIS year, and of course, that's going to be KWs stance just before FA. Can't let the players know they have an extra bargaining chip because he has to go for bust.
-
Some on here feel that the right thing to do would be to pretend we didn't have a windfall of extra SMS and to honor deals and prices set before the league dropped the bomb. I say bullshit to that, teach Ted Goveia his first big lesson about meddling with our FA's and screw the nice guy act and do what is in the best interest of our club....to hell with the rest. Nice GMs finish last. Screw them over, screw them over, screw them over....GO KYLE we have a cup to raise on home soil. Anything less than pulling out every stop to put our interests first is a failure.
The media, and whoever, can wax poetically about honor among thieves.....F That. If we don't make our revised best pitch to Kenny because of some ridiculous notion of lollipops and rainbows amongst the other GMs then we deserve what we get if we are not hoisting the cup. All other teams in this league are our competition, you put your foot on the throat of your competition every chance you can in business.

What would have been wasteful a few days ago, is now very open to interpretation. If Walters was working off say a 500k budget for receivers on Monday, today it would not be wasteful if that budget was 550k (10% increase). That 50k was the difference between us and Hamilton. That's just math. We can no longer say that 275 k is wasteful on our best receiver when it may fit the positional budget.

Lawler is going to have to be replaced by a couple guys. Could make for a deeper group, who knows. Hopefully it forces collaros to not rely on Lawler to bail his ass out all thr time.
I like who we have brought in so far as possible Kenny replacements. It will definitely have to be by committee, no doubt about it. White, Sterns, and Mitchell give us some decent receiving options. Clercius over Woli is a hard move to make, but one that should pay dividends maybe as early as this year. Would be nice to get Wilson back sooner than later if Lawler really is gone.

Every team got the same amount of money. If we up the offer on Kenny, they up the offer too. Dumb way of doing business.
They can't talk to him unless he turns down both our deals, at that point you move on. Nothing dumb about it other than your understanding of how it could and probably would work.
1 minute ago, Mike said:It’s flawed because you think this is all on hold for some fairy tale window of exclusivity this weekend. That could’ve been happening by now. It isn’t. It’s not going to.
We won't bring our best offer until the exclusive window, if you can't see why. that's not on me.

Yea, if it was capped sure. But we have to make sure that we don't give competing leagues a dead duck target on how to get our QBs.

There is nothing flawed about this at all. It's business 101. You pivot as the budget allows. I was in business for many years and available cash flow has a massive effect on everything. If you have budget room to spend so as not to take an even bigger loss you do so.

These deals wouldn't be announced if the players were still negotiating. It never happens. Guys know what they're going to be offered and teams don't sit around hoping they can keep guys. They take what happens ans move on.
In the past, sure. Made their best offer another team offered more. Nothing more to be done. This year teams got an unexpected windfall of SMS halfway through the week.
2 minutes ago, Mike said:Listen to Dunk talk about it on his podcast. That’s where the agents and GMs have their head at regarding this.
You wanna hope Kenny Lawler is under the Christmas tree when you wake up tomorrow, go ahead.
I'm not suggesting Kenny necessarily comes back, but I guarantee Walters is upping his pitch. He would be an idiot not to do so. I don't give a fig what Dunk is saying, no GM is going to talk to him about waiting until the exclusive window and re-entering talks with their pending FAs. Some guys will have been moved on from, other guys were losses that teams were forced to make because of the old SMS number. Kenny is one of those guys.
-
2 minutes ago, Mike said:
I’m not discounting it, you’re putting way too much weight into it. Pretty much every talking point about it outside of Paul Friesen has been that it’s a non-starter to give any of these free agents more money.
Who is doing that talking. Certainly not the players, or the GMs. One would have to be pretty naive to think that some teams won't circle back on players they really want to keep as is their right to do so. The cap just went up unexpectedly by 10%, that changes everything.
-
4 minutes ago, Mike said:
You can cling to this hope all you want that we are maybe going to bring back Kenny. I’m not wrong.
You think teams are just waiting for this magical “exclusive window” to begin? “hold on, let’s hold our cap space hostage until the magic window opens”
If Kenny or any other free agent (Metchie actually did this, it was reported) gave their old team an extended amount of time to try and make a contract work that matched what they were getting from a new team, that’s already happened. Walters isn’t waking up tomorrow to find a sack of cash under his pillow that he can suddenly use.
He just woke up yesterday with a sack of money under his pillow. You seem to be discounting that. You keep thinking that agreeing to terms on a dollar amount with another team is an obligation by the player during this window. It is not. For all intents and purposes it is only an obligation by the team making the offer that if you don't re-sign with your team we will honor the dollar amount we discussed.
-
2 minutes ago, Mike said:
I fully grasp what the stated intention is. I’m telling you it doesn’t work like that. Go back and look at last year. Free agency week was the tampering week.
You can pretend that this illusion of a negotiating window does something to the publicly agreed upon deals. It doesn’t. None of these players that have “agreed to terms” with new teams are taking these offers to their old teams. That includes Kenny.
Sorry man you are dead wrong on this. Last year the SMS didn't move halfway through tampering week. If you don't think that entirely changes things then I guess math isn't your skill set.
-

I feel like it has only ever worked out that way against us. What was that dingus' name again?
So far, but no player is obligated to any of the terms they have accepted. NONE. The only people that are obligated are the teams that made the offer and they are only obligated so that teams don't make offers and walk away simply to drive up a player's price. Mike does not seem to grasp what this tampering period is for. It is meant only to establish market value for players and give teams time to prepare for what the market bears for their pending FAs and who they may no longer be able to afford. No one is obligated to anyone and each team and GM is fully aware of that when they file the offer. There isn't a single team that isn't 100% cognizant that the player they have offer sheeted may still sign with their former team.
Normally, in these scenarios the player leaving will leave but this year a little half million monkey wrench may lead to some teams still retaining FA's they thought they were losing for SMS reasons and not a single team will cry about it when it happens.

We moved on before signing Sterns. We moved on the minute he agreed to terms with Hamilton.
You don't know that. This week was set up entirely so that teams would have 48 hours to talk to their pending FA's. No team in the CFL or player has signed anything and agreed to terms is worth nothing until each team has that 48 hours. If the Bombers make a final pitch to Kenny and he accepts it there was absolutely ZERO obligation for him to sign in Hammy, nor would there be any hard feelings at all by anyone. This is how this week was designed to work. All Kenny agreed to was that IF the Bombers don't step up I will go to Hamilton...nothing more. People keep suggesting that this agreed to terms is some kind of obligation by the players. It isn't and it was never designed to be one. Kenny could go to FA as well, and there would still be no hard feelings. It is his right to do so. It is the Bombers right to have an exclusive time to try persuade him to stay as well.

maybe the 50lk higher they didnt wanna match without that extra 400k was gonna prevent them doing something else they targeted?...now....it may be irrelevant...and really...we are a better team with him than not
yup....he really enjoys it here....and we know ZC loves having him...You would think a GM and coach would try to appease him if it's doable now
yup...
well...we do have our 48 hour window now...so if we had said 225k before...and now we say say 260...275....he can sign here and the Ticat offer sheet becomes null and void...thats how that supposed to work...and from what I understand the Cat's...or whatever team filed the offer sheet cant counter.....Now with this "extra" amount available...would they be allowed?....who knows....but they also may have been banking on a couple Hundie K raise in cap...as all teams knew it was coming...just not the amount and already cooked it into their offer...or maybe not...guess we will see how many guys end up back with their original team in that window
They cannot counter in the 48 hour window. They've had 2 days now to go back to Kenny and raise the offer if they so wished. Once the Bombers get the league info on what the exact offer is that Kenny accepted then the Bombers have an exclusive 48 hours to seal the deal. If Kenny wants to see if a Hammy counter will come he needs to go to FA. If I'm the Bombers I am insisting Kenny signs now or the offer is off the table come FA. However, after signing Sterns I think we may have moved on. Hope not tho.
8 minutes ago, Goalie said:Didn’t Schoen sign for like 175 plus incentives. Why would anyone think bombers would be willing to give lawler 100k more in guaranteed money. It’s obvious they weren’t willing to overpay and 275k for lawler is an overpay, extra 400k or not. Was reported Calgary offered him 250k. Bombers probably didn’t even go that high because it was around that time that we were told Kenny’s agent told Walter’s he wouldn’t be back. Bombers weren’t gonna go 250 never mind 275 or more.
We offered 225 apparently. If we go to 260 I would think Kenny would sign with us. You keep throwing around 275 as the number we have to match. We don't. Kenny took a lesser offer two years ago to be with us, no reason to believe he wouldn't again.
-
24 minutes ago, Colin Unger said:
Couldn't the bombers threaten to pull their offer which would end up sealing Kenny's 2year deal at 275k. He'd have to take Hamilton's word for it that they would re-negotiate.
Kenny doesn't have to accept any deal offered right now. If Walters is to make a play for Kenny he will need to sign on the dotted line right now but even if he doesn't he can still opt out of the Hammy deal and hit FA. He is not obligated to any offer this week.

So you are suggesting that Walters won't adjust what he will spend now that he has an increased budget? Usually when you have a higher budget, you spend more money. I'd be very surprised if now that he has an extra 400 k that he will just ignore that extra money and stick to the smaller budget.
For sure. You spend what you have. 2 days ago that was not much, now that's half a million.
11 hours ago, Goalie said:If the bombers weren’t gonna offer lawler 276k before, why would they now? He’s a ticat. Time to move on. I say 276 cuz we all know Kenny would have Taken the 276 over the 275. Bombers weren’t willing to pay him that. Who cares what Zach thinks. Oh look Kyle an extra 400k. Let’s give it all to Kenny eventho a week ago we didn’t wanna overpay him but hey now we do. I don’t think so. Bombers signings indicate lawler is a goner.
Lawler loves Winnipeg, who is to say that he doesn't meet us in the middle at 260 or something.

Of course everyone should agree JT is a dumb rostering....but also should have the sense to realize that a no upside..rapidly declining player who many say is ok to have for" 6 or so reps"...and should have no consideration at all for 226 should be replaced with a younger...more talented player with upside and a future here...to absorb those supposedly minimal reps. kick starting their development...at a lesser cost and givingyou theexact same....most likely more....and knowing what I know and Osh and how he operates...JT will be getting plenty of reps
And it's not the "bottom" of the game day depth...was throughout...injured guys over halthy...guys dressed but dont see a rep....inferior guys over more talented....Excessive Canadians when not needed....on and on...yr after yr
I have appluaded Osh for the positives....but I also criticize with the negatives..and they are a plemty....a strong in its prime roster hid a lot of them...not so much now....and its not 2 yrs....it gong on 4 yrs of failure for the exact same reasons.....I also am a person who doesnt believe all they read in media and lil sound bites here and there as I get my news and sound bites a lot of times right at the source...unfiltered and not fluffed...so take it as you wish.....doesnt matter to me....and loosen up the dockers now ....and you are correct...some people see what they wanna see.....a good self descriptive comment for sure

Exactky...some people can't actually see what needs to be seen....or actually know what to watch....no slight on them as they do not have an extensive football background....but he is just not good enough and you can see teams do specific things for when he is out there
People will challange the criticism that "I will trust in Osh as he is a coach and people complaining are nobodies) well many people here have real extensive football back grounds and knowledge...And yah Osh is a pro coach...but he has shown time and time again for over 10 yrs now, that he has favorites and values certain guys for reasons only known to him, that are not based on talent and whats best for the team and roster....It's not just a complaint here that he looks like a mixed beer league slow pitch player....tho that also doesnt help his cause either....he's constantly sucking wind....not involved....can't really go and get involved and just flat out...is not good enough anymore nor deserves to be on a roster....reality hurts and sucks...but thats the reality
Some people see what they wanna see. Don't give me this crapola about anyone disagreeing with your take not having football knowledge. That is pure bullshit and an absolutely garbage way to conduct a discussion on a forum. I have played and coached football at a high enough level to know what I am talking about. You are not the only guy on here with football experience. No one is suggesting that JT isn't a problem, what some of us are saying is that you seem awfully fixated on one roster player being the root of all evil. Perhaps it is you that has lost perspective? Have you ever considered that? For two years now you have been suggesting that the rostering at the bottom of our game day depth chart outweighs the positives of MOS's coaching overall and that my friend is just plain bias on your part because that assessment isn't coming with any kind of football acumen behind it. If that is not what you are saying then why the 2 year long circle jerk about it? Yes, JT got way more reps last year than he should have. No one is disagreeing. What you always and conveniently never take into consideration is that injury was the main reason for a lot of them. Look...We ALL agree that MOS has some negative coaching habits, Just not going to dwell on them because he is outstanding in so many other areas that it makes up for his weaknesses. Good gravy man....hearing you talk about MOS one would think he stole your wife.

The only hope is that the upper-level mafia pushes quality over favoritism and that the exodus of other guys puts us in a position where things change.
I just don't see a universe where Jake outplays Lawson for the vast majority of reps this year. Last year was easy for Osh to give the reps to JT. there was no proven commodity behind him. This year, it would be near impossible knowing what we know about Lawson's ability.
