2024/2025 CFL (non-Bomber) Off-Season Thread

Actually, a Tik Tok campaign is more likely to reach the intended audience than a radio campaign.5 points -
lmao that's so accurate. I wonder what the kids have moved on to now... I think the league needs to hire some teens and cut right to whatever is current. I feel like this has been the CFL since maybe the 80s, but at least since the Rocket was in Toronto. The times since then that the league has been on point with the demo you target for growth are few and far between. Could you imagine if we did a demographics breakdown of MBB? 18-24, 0. 18-29, maybe 3. 30-50, 2690. Then 8 or so whose SIN numbers have less than 3 digits.4 points

It's true... Radio is reaching the market that already exists. It's the same philosophy for booking half time shows... You're not appealing to the market you already have. You need to bring in the audience that isn't there... TikTok for marketing, and some hot young pop star that nobody over 40 has heard of for your half time show...4 points -

They've been spending it because it was built in when the current powers that be took over; they've also been gutting those programs left, right, and centre. There are very few instances where radio is still desired across Canada. Most are finite niches like the bombers on Cjob, and most are for people far older than the target demo. The money that goes into radio from those channels today would be better spent on a podcast series hosted on a streaming service and YouTube. I think the big hope with this new commish is that he has the media chops to push our product. Randy talked big about the US TV deal and growing outside the Canadian market, but didn't accomplish much. The big thing with the CFL is we need to get the younger demos to games. Places like here and Ott have succeeded by growing our game day experience and branding in the younger generation with an inclusive, amazing experience. The best way I know to do that is to engage that demo in mediums they care about. I think fun events with players like the QB challenge is a great way to personalize and humanize the players. Whereas the leagues 1 one-year contracts can kind of dehumanize guys and relegate them to a number on a jersey, doing a job. The WWE is doing some stuff these days to bring fans closer to their product. Shows like Next Gen, LFG, and the forthcoming Unreal. Formula 1 did this very successfully, and the UFC originally grew a lot out of the TUF show. We've seen some shows that go behind the scenes with 1 team for a season, which have been very well regarded. But that has a limited, regional impact. I'd like to see a show/webseries, etc that follows, say, 4 teams. 1 team at the bottom that has a decent chance to grow, maybe the off-season champion, Edmonton type, 2 contenders, and 1 other playoff team. If teams fall off, they get relegated, and you swap in another. A show that follows all the teams at some of the US tryouts and into the pre-season would be great too. The new generation's target demographic wants more than bodies wearing a number. They don't as much watch for the patch on the front of the jersey vs the name on the back; they want to be immersed in a deep story. They want more reasons to care than regional rivalry and pride.4 points -

So very accurate. I feel like online forums really hit with my generation, but the kids today they're all on "the socials". The older generation is still calling in to cjob for their discussion.3 points -
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too. - Abe Simpson3 points

They aren’t. Even pre championship the raptors were huge out to the west coast. It was Canada’s team before and only much more so since. I think you’re just out of the target demographic. The cfl couldn’t dream of the national reach the raptors have. I mean it’s radio. Tsn isn’t even on the radio any more. A great marketing type would be fantastic. The type of growth the cfl needs requires many things. That’s one and honestly idk what all else. But it’s not doing great getting those people due to its small niche market. If any thing, the cfl is a small regional niche market. How much of league attendance comes from Winnipeg, ssk and then bc buying butts in seats with gimmicks and cheap tickets? 60% or more? If the bombers and riders market slouched back to what it was in our dark ages pre 01, the league might collapse.2 points -
Have you not watched the last ten years of TSN? They cycle through the same 3 commercials over and over and over and over again. The options are limited with the amount of sponsors for the CFL. The CFL is so niche outside of the prairies that I can't imagine a big company like Wendys or Subway attaching themselves with an expensive ad campaign featuring an unknown person like Dru Brown. The Wendys kick to win was a successful novelty long time ago, nowdays I don't think would even notice. Other campaigns like the ones with save on really only draw attention from the old timers. TV advertising is wasted money these days, if they are trying to attract a younger demographic then the only place they could get eyes is with social media for which the CFL and the clubs already do heavy advertising. Honestly the best thing the CFL could do is push teams to follow the Ottawa/Winnipeg game day experiences.2 points

Some bombers visited rankin inlet, gabe Wallace included. Boy, he is looking lean and mean. He was 6’6 350+ in college. Came to camp 330-340 with a decent belly still. Now he looks like a stunt double for the mountain. Doesn’t look like he just lost weight either, looks like he put on some lean mass. Can’t wait to see what he brings this year.2 points

Especially tough....when you're from a generation when radio was the entertainment and no television.....This technical world spins so fast now-a days, it makes ol guys like me, wonder where the hell it's all going1 point -
Yeah I don't think anyone was expecting Charbonneau to be anything other than an ST'er but those guys are needed and guys like Gauthier can't play forever. Just found it odd that they released him with a little over 2 weeks until camp starts - could always use him as TCF, even if they don't see him making the club.1 point

You may want to go look at that "national" network - Sportsnet Radio consists of a grand total of 3 cities (Vancouver, Calgary & Montreal). Even the Blue Jays Radio Network is more regional than national with most of the stations being in Ontario. In Calgary, you have both but we have neither in MB so how are they building an audience here (or the many other places that don't have their radio service)?1 point

One does not have to be particularly woke to think that making unwanted sexual advances on an employee, then holding her employment over her head when she rebuts your advances is pretty cringe. The fact we let him keep playing in our league is also cringy. I'm GenX and this disturbs me and we GenXers have seen a lot of this in the past.1 point

It wouldn't surprise me if they're buddies. Hofer is from Manitoba (clearly) and they're both devout Christians, from my understanding, so it wouldn't surprise me if they know each other well and were just ******* with each other...0 points
