Cortez among OC's on Bomber wish list

Drew Willy looked very good in his starts under Cortez in Saskatchewan. I'd love to have him over a coach that's already failed twice here....

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/football/bombers/Blue-Bombers-considering-ex-Lion-for-offensive-co-ordinator-spot-360196641.html

The crazy season in the CFL — the annual shuffling of coaching jobs that begins after the Grey Cup — has spit out an intriguing name for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The B.C. Lions, in addition to announcing Wednesday Wally Buono would return to the sidelines and act as GM after Jeff Tedford resigned amid rumours he was heading back to the NCAA, also indicated veteran offensive co-ordinator George Cortez would not return in 2016.

It’s worth noting Cortez, even before the announcement, was already on the Bombers’ candidate wish list for their vacant offensive co-ordinator position.

So, too, is Bombers Hall of Famer Khari Jones, who spent last season as the Lions’ receivers coach. The Bombers would need permission from the Lions to speak with Jones, but are free to chat with Cortez now.

The Bombers have already begun the interview process for their offensive boss position and there are a number of candidates said to be on the list, including former head coach-turned-TSN analyst Paul LaPolice, Marcus Brady of the Toronto Argonauts, Jarious Jackson of the Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders interim head coach Bob Dyce and offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. Jason Maas, the Ottawa Redblacks offensive guru, has long been on Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea’s wish list but he could be a candidate for the Eskimos if their current head coach, Chris Jones, bolts to the Riders for a GM/head coach gig.

He’s also not going to make a lateral move unless it involves a promotion, such as an assistant head coach title.

All those candidates are likely watching to see what unfolds in Regina, but in Cortez, the Bombers have a candidate they can talk to now.

There is also a connection: Cortez was the Riders offensive co-ordinator in 2013-14, working one year with Drew Willy before the quarterback landed in Winnipeg.

And Willy’s possible endorsement — or a thumbs down — will play a significant role in who ends up in the job.

Cortez has 19 years experience in the CFL, beginning with the Montreal Concordes in 1984.

He has also worked for the Ottawa Rough Riders, Calgary Stampeders and Buffalo Bills before becoming the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ head coach in 2012.

He was fired by the Ticats after one season, having posted a 6-12 record, but has been a part of five Grey Cup championship teams, four with the Stamps (1992, 1998, 2001 and 2008) and one with the Riders (2013).

  • Even if what you're saying is true, which it isn't, what value does saying it (for the umpteenth time, no less) add to any conversation around here? We get it. You're miserable. Move on.

  • An interesting note that's kinda gone unnoticed (or at least not really discussed here...) is that it appears the Bombers are talking to every single possible potential candidate they can get their ha

  • NO! I can not stress this enough. Don't hire a coordinator expecting them to be the next head coach. How the **** has that worked out for this team the last times they've done it? Daley, Burke, disast

I could see LaPo as head coach in Edmonton...

I support any job for Lapo that meets the following two criteria, although the first criteria is a must, second is just a preference

1) Not with the Bombers

2) Not with TSN

Looks like everything is falling in place for the return of PLAP. I shake my head and sigh.

I dunno, He may be alright. I never disliked the guy when he was an OC.

Yea not sure I get the lapo hate. His offenses were better then MBs and I dont think his concepts are outdated or ineffective.

Id rather go with a different option myself but hes far from a horrible option people around here are making him out to be.

He'd be a good hire. If he wants to come here. Now with the HC position open in Edmonton...

I can't see Lapo in Edm just b/c of his close ties with Kavis Reed.

Maas and Cortez, are not an OC options anymore.

Right now, LaPo and K.Jones are the top 2 names that are floating. If I have to chose between them, I rather have LaPo.

J.Jackson is a dark horse here. Although, he has a lot of options, (1) stay with Edm to be OC under Maas, (2) follow C.Jones, (3) go back to BC and (4) go to Wpg.

I'm guessing McAdoo will follow Jones in Ssk.

I bet Brady and Condell will stay on the shadows of their HCs.

Whenever people complain about Lapolice, I keep going back to the fact that the last time he was here, he was scheming for a very underwhelming quarterback. I keep going back to the fact that people criticized him for playing it safe, but that only seemed to be when Pierce was QB - Elliott used to be able to sling it and attack defenses just fine.

Here's where I'm at with things - If we hire Lapolice and he calls plays for Willy like he did for Elliott, we should be in for a pretty decent offensive attack.

Bobby Dyce's name was in the mix but it seems to have fizzled out.   Always thought he had a brilliant football mind but the lustre seems to have worn off since he lost his OC duties in Sask.

I don't want us to roll the Dyce on Bob. Yeah, I know.... Position coach, sure. OC no way.

I'd love Dyce back here for Special Teams coach.

Is Khari under contract for next year?  What are the odds is Lapo as OC and Khari as QB coach?

I'm all for that.

But I wouldnt mind C.Dickenson or Kilam here too... whoever becomes available.

I don't mind this Offense coaching staff

OC LaPolice
QB K.Jones
OL Wylie
RB Pierce
REC Howell - (or Dyce)

With Jones apparently leaving Edmonton for the Riders .. what are the chances LaPolice gets the head gig in Edmonton .. especially in light of the fact that there is a decided lack of head coaching talent in the league..

Dickenson apparently will either follow Jones or hook up with his brother in Calgary.  If he goes to Calgary, Penton says Kilam would likely wind up in BC or Toronto.

How long before it is apparent that Wpg will likely be the last resort for unemployed coaches?

The Riders with Reinbold as GM, Jim Daley as Head Coach, Marcel as OC and Etch as DC would be a dream.

Ok now your just being mean. LOL.  No Jim Daley on staff?

???

Rumour has Craig joining Dave for the DIckenson connection in Calgary... I would like to see a guy like Mark Kilam on our staff...

I believe all the coaches other than MB will be returning next season.  So I don't think you'll see K Jones as QB coach.

Our new OC will probably bring his own guys in... at least, I hope he's allowed to...

My preference (if we can't get Maas) would be:

OC - Khari Jones

QB - Howell

OL - Wylie

RB/OL - Charbonneau

REC - Edwards

ST - Dyce

Strength/Conditioning - Buck

Not a huge fan of Lapo and I'm not sure he'd work with OShea...

Keep the DC coaches the same...  I'd like an improvement but Hall has done a decent job.

I would also make Trevor Harris the highest paid QB in the league and Willy would become our backup.

Sign another OL, another DL and a replacement for Nick Moore.  Load up TC with receivers and DL.

If you're taking away the new OC's autonomy to have a say in his own assistants... then don't get your hopes up on getting a quality candidate....

I think whoever the OC will be should have the liberty to select his own assistants. If it's Lapo, I would assume that Howell and Wylie  are safe since they have worked with him before. And we all know how LaPo like Pierce. ;)

QB coach Dahlquist was brought by Marcel (Omaha connection)...

If not K.Jones, one thing I can think is... move Pierce as QB coach and bring Cobourne as RB coach.

Floyd, you would seriously make Howell a QB coach over Buck?

Does Wylie deserve to come back? Our OL has been brutal for both of his years, and with Chris Greaves going from a healthy scratch as a Bomber to a starter with the champs, that's gotta make you wonder...
