With the shape of the ball a one handed attempt that gets tipped is worse than not attempting the catch at all. The ball is coming in hard & fast so why would Washington even think he could catch it with 1 hand? Not a smart play. Again, it comes down to receiver basics. Plus Washington completely blew the tackle, he had a clear shot at him around the 45 and he let the D.B. run through his arms and right over his body. TBURGESS Posted September 5, 2018 Report Share Posted September 5, 2018 If it was Reilly, a great deep ball QB, to Duke, a noted 50-50 receiver, in that situation, then it would have a much better chance of success. It wasn't. It was Nichols, who doesn't have the best arm and doesn't throw the deep ball accurately to Washington, a rookie receiver trying to make his 2nd CFL catch. Nichols has the experience. He should know his own limitations. He should know not to throw into double coverage, especially to an untested rookie. I'll stick with bad decision and bad throw as the major causes of the INT. No way....in a split second he is going to try and catch it, even if it is a high throw or slightly behind...to expect him to just let it go is ridiculous! Mr Dee Posted September 5, 2018 Report Share Posted September 5, 2018 Not the best video evidence, but you can plainly see the ball is thrown too high. If thrown at pad level, I think he has it. By the way, there is a Rider on Washington, but he shows as a blur in this snapshot. Still, the ball is thrown to the right space..just too high. If not tipped, it lands in that open space. But I do agree that a receiver’s natural instinct is to make a play on that ball. As an aside, Stanley Bryant is the man responsible for knocking Elam out of bounds, some 50 yards downfield.
