If This Texas Abortion Ban Takes Effect, The State Will Pay Citizens To Enforce It

A Texas law banning abortion at six weeks is set to go into effect in just a few days. And while the ban will make it nearly impossible for women to get abortions in the state, the six-week ban — abortion opponents’ garden-variety tactic of late — is not the most concerning part.

What makes this Texas statute particularly troubling is that it deputizes private citizens to actively seek out and sue people “aiding or abetting” women who are attempting to get abortions in the state of Texas. If you successfully sue that person — whether it’s an abortion provider, a pregnant woman’s friend, or even the rideshare driver who dropped her off at a clinic — you receive a $10,000 bounty.

(Words fail me to describe how ******-up this is)

If they only worked as hard at protecting the lives there from COVID. Pro life my ass.

  2. Here's my take on the whole violence from the left misdirection (if you're gonna ignore or discredit, you're gonna ignore and discredit no matter what);

I'm probably as about as left as they come, as it is part of my job. I've attended meetings and zoom calls for BLM on a national and international level, including with Toronto, and US chapters of BLM, as we were trying to understand the issues as things unfolded last year, what was needed, and how we could support. There was never a sniff of any violent actions being discussed. Never. Lots of talk on being visible, being vocal, being informed and fighting misinformation. Never about what you need to protect yourselves, other than through sheer numbers. Fighting back was actively discouraged, as it was known how that would be spun.  Meeting and seeing these people certainly did not bring up images of the Black Panthers, or anyone capable of violence.

I believe the the whole concept of a violent left wing organized Antifa is made up. If there was anything remotely violent being planned, I am confident I would have heard about it even in passing or as a suggestion. Any violent action from the left is either largely disproportionate to right wing violence, reactionary, or a result of mob mentality. I'm not denying its existence, but i do believe that it is a narrative for whataboutism and to validate right wing violence.

    Hooray! This is great news.

I'm hoping my employer follows suit.

I agree, though the mandatory requirement through a broad spectrum of positions is a legal quagmire and relatively new ground. For example, jurisdictions have tried to mandate flu vaccines in health care and been shot down (no pun intended!) . It is going to be interesting how it plays out and how it is applied to other workplaces.

    Ditto.

I'm actually amazed how much "material" you've packed into one title and one and a half lines lines. I'm no fan of the current government by any means, but it's a charter issue. I'm not even going to attempt at touching anything you've brought up, including the inference that we should treat our population like the Chinese do. I honestly don't think you care to know the answers to your own questions.

Not a good start for the new minister. The lack of empathy or ability to read the current situation is simply amazing.

At first i was thinking this was a recorded address from the past. When I realized it was from today, my reaction was -You've got to be ******* kidding me to be that tone deaf at this point, let alone speaking as the Minister responsible. What the **** was he thinking by even saying that, thinking it would fly? What the **** was Pallister thinking picking this guy?

Lots of credit and kudos to the Minnesota department of justice, the judge, jury, and prosecuting  team. They did it right and he got what he deserved. He can spend the next 22 years terrified of who is around the next corner or coming up behind him.

My guess- Unless he gets special treatment, it won't be that long before the guy around the corner comes.

Good stuff here...this suggests no limit on the number of fully vaxxed in attendance....

My second shot is July 7, so two weeks after that will put me on the good list a couple weeks before kick off!

What's even nuttier... Moderna is ~2-4% more efficacious than Pfizer...

We should be reserving the Pfizer shots for 12-17 year olds...

    This.

I can't get my 13 year old daughter in for her second because we don't know how many Pfizer there will be. Anyone have any suggestions?

New restrictions coming at 4pm today. I'm expecting a stay at home order and stores will only be able to sell essential items, like November to January. We'll see.

No hope the kids are going back to class this year, which is a shame.

Glad I got to Costco today then!

  9. So apparently on the weekend the RCMP (I'm assuming since it's Headingley) were parked outside of the Shelmerdine's Garden centre entrance checking ID's of people in cars together going in, ensuring they were all from the same household, and fining those who were not.

Can't say that's a bad idea right now with COVID,

I really think we need to change this narrative. ******* Kenney does the same in Alberta. But call it what it is, 1/4 have got their first dose. They're not fully vaccinated until they get the 2nd dose.

This. Until people get the second shot, they're not fully protected. This whole concept of we've done our job for 25% or 25% the way through so far is crap. Let's also not forget that the immunization is only anticipated to be good for 6 months.

My wife works at HSC and has no idea when she's getting shot #2.

At this point, with the breadth and depth of hatred and fear between political and economic opposites in the US, I cannot see how the country can survive much longer.

Yeah I agree. I don't know how that country fixes things without tearing itself apart first.

The best thing we can do is ensure that crap doesn't permeate our systems anymore than it already has.

They are doing a poor job of letting people know but if you are going to the convention center for the vaccine, you can park for free in the parkade.

Which is great, except there's probably 100 cars waiting to get in there, and as JCon said, there's so little parking available in the surrounding area. It only seems to be getting worse. I've seen the line up down St. Mary almost to Main, a bunch of cars waiting to turn on to St. Mary from Hargrave, and a bunch more coming down Edmonton I believe. Add to that very little street parking in the surrounding area.

I think they're not advertising it because they can't manage it.
