2021 (??) CFL Season

https://www.tsn.ca/naylor-many-questions-but-few-answers-on-a-2021-cfl-season-1.1543725

The Canadian Football League has been outrageously quiet since it pulled the plug on its season more than two months ago, leaving behind a wake of speculation about where things are headed next.

With the reality setting in that COVID-19 is likely to still be around in some form next summer, there is real concern about what the 2021 season might look like or if it will occur at all.

There are teams that believe it is vitally important to play in 2021 and that without a season the CFL is in danger of being mothballed. Whether every team believes that is another question. And there is a lot to sort out before anyone can accurately predict what a season might look like and how much pain the teams are collectively willing to stomach to make it happen.

The league and its franchises are currently running through various scenarios for next season, trying to get a handle on true costs of each and working at ways to trim budgets and save money. That’s likely to continue until the league can truly choose a course of action, which feels like next April at the earliest.

Why? Well, there’s not much point in fully committing to a scenario that’s seven months away if that scenario might be totally unrealistic by the time you get there.

There has been no 2021 business plan presented yet, only regular updates to the presidents and governors about what the league is doing to prepare for the unknown.

It should be noted that teams will need to make decisions about retaining assistant coaches with expiring contracts by December, which will be the first real economic commitments to a 2021 season. Restrictions on signing players will need to be lifted well before the opening of February free agency, where players are likely to meet a cautious market – one in which signing bonuses will probably be absent.

There’s a collective bargaining agreement to amend, if not renegotiate, with the players, which will require some kind of pressure point because it always does. But the league can’t sit down with the players until it gets a true handle on revenues and it can’t do that until it chooses a course of action.

Will CFL teams be allowed to have full stadiums next summer? It doesn't seem likely. But just what percentage of capacity will be allowed – if any at all – is impossible to guess. It seems as if the league is counting on the restrictions that currently prevent fans from being in stadiums being lifted. But to what degree?

When will we see a schedule? Good question. Or could we see multiple schedules for different scenarios? Never say never.

Could it be a 21-week, 18-game season played in home stadiums? Unlikely, given the losses teams are expected to take with reduced numbers of fans in the stands. Could we see a return to the 10-week bubble? Maybe. A nine-game schedule played in home stadiums before fans? Perhaps.

The point is no one knows, so demanding answers to questions that can’t possibly be answered right now is a waste of time.

All we know is that there’s going to be a lot less revenue for teams to operate with under any scenario, not just because of crowd restrictions but also due to older fans choosing to stay home for their safety. The CFL’s fan demographics do it no favours in this regard.

Getting consensus on a best course of action won’t be easy for the CFL’s nine teams. Back in the summer, there were teams that were willing to play without government support and teams that weren’t. And just like then, the biggest challenge commissioner Randy Ambrosie faces now is finding a scenario they can all live with.

Adopting a revenue-sharing model so that each team absorbs the same amount of red ink would certainly make consensus-building easier, which many believe should be the direction for the future, COVID-19 or not.

The other elephant in the room is federal government, which many in the CFL believe left it high and dry last summer after months of back-and-forth talks where the league believed it was making progress.

Is the CFL prepared to go down that road again, knowing it doesn’t control the timeline and larger forces can change things in an instant? Perhaps, although it’s not as though the feds don’t have a long list of people coming at them with their hands out.

There will be voices demanding the owners suck up the losses of playing a season under any circumstance, as owners have done in other sports. But the business calculation in sports such as MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA is different because of the percentage of revenues those leagues derive from television.

Losses sustained by playing in those leagues can also be viewed as investments towards protecting massive franchise values. That’s not the case in the CFL, where teams can’t just float money on the backs of their franchise values, and where one third of the teams are publicly owned.

It would be beneficial for the league to soon announce its formal commitment to play some kind of season in 2021.

But beyond that, get ready for months more of waiting with lots of questions and speculation but very few answers.

So Derek Taylor responded to the time change for the West Final saying the Riders will get an extra half hour to prep for the Grey Cup. Wonder how it feels to sell your soul to the toothless mob?

You're just jelly because you won't get to watch the Grey Cup with the rest of the Riders, from their homes in Regina. They must need that extra half hour of prep time to thaw the outhouse for their guests.

I would be very happy,  Arbuckle is the only QB that beat the Bombers this season and has shown lots of good.   Now time to clear the GM and coaches....

He is a good player.

They had all these guys in 2019 so I won't lose sleep.

The issue is the QB

They have committed to run the ball the past few games think they are much more balanced in 2021 than 2019.

Off topic. Wonder if this team is more dominant than the current bomber squad. Imagine having some one hang 106 on you lol. 13 passing tds. Sounds like the type of coach the riders would love.

Fun fact: The most lopsided American College Football score in history was 222 - 0. The winning team was led by John Heisman (yes, the one the trophy is named after). He did so as a retaliatory act as the Cumberland College had earlier beaten up on the Georgia Tech's baseball team.

Cumberland made no pass attempts, and had 27 rush attempts for -42 yards. They also lost 9 fumbles throughout the game.

Yep I had a post about it on the Anniverary in I think 2019. It's one of my favorite all time football stories.

The north Cumberland fake baseball team used a semi pro ringer team to beat up on heismans team too. You don't mess with him lol.

At one point a player was drug off by a pack of wild dogs. The starting qb for Cumberland was knocked out cold on the opening kick off and came back twice only to be carted off. A couple players snuck off the field and hid behind the score board. Truly the wildest game of football ever. If any one hasn't watched it or heard of the game I strongly recommend the video.

It really seems like you’re getting defensive- like I’m trying to attack the league or something. So if I’m saying any of this poorly, please excuse me.

im just trying to discuss what I think to be an important issue. I certainly don’t have the answer to something that has plagued our league for years.

The NFL is a huge part of the problem. They’re recognizing that short athletic QBs can be effective. They’re expanding the practice rosters and allowing players to stay on them longer. In the time they’ve been doing that, we’ve seen less talent come North.

Teams are signing a lot of D2 qbs. There's a reason why they are.

They are furious on social media. Saying Sunderland shouldn't be allowed to sign any players long term as he'll be fired & that Arbuckle hasn't won anything.

Ambles Jordan Huff Baggleton Mayala not bad group.

Bo is the weak link. If he can't win with those receivers & Kadeem Carey running the ball then the Stmps should cut him loose in the off season & promote Maier.

They can feel that way all they want, but what they gain in the running game they lose double in Bo's inability to throw anymore. Unless his shoulder suddenly and miraculously heals, and he suddenly becomes a cold weather player, the Stamps are still worse than the team they had in 2019. I expect SSK in the West final actually. If Calgary can get out of SSK with a win they will be beat up.

fwiw, Riders players dropping like flies today....already missing Kyran Moore from a knee injury suffered vs Montreal, AC Leonard a no-show at practice due to unspecified injury, then newly acquired Duke Williams gets injured and taken down the tunnel, and shortly after that, Dan Clark goes down and can barely walk under his own power..... a shallow depth team gets shallower.....

Duke looks slow...out of shape and basically pedestrian up there...and based on last game...and just further confirmation...Fjardo is a useless QB other than a change a pace and run for a first down/broken play guy...going nowhere far with him..and they tied their wagon to him at elite starter money...oh darn!!

I feel that the stumps are going to field BLM against us in the final regular season game and then switch to Meir if we face them in the WFs

League prolly tried to piss test ac again. So he went into hiding.

Idk If that ol can get worse.

Hard for fringe speed guys when they lose a step. Looks like the mafia dodged a bullet. I would love for them to bring in some fresh blood for the pr and get orange and agudosi in a game. It'd be great to see some Grant reps at wr too.

Idk whats up with agudosi on the suspended list wish one of the reporters would ask about him.

Cal ssk will be the worst western semi team combination in memory. Gonna be 5 to 2 with all singles on missed field goals.

I assume whatever pylon they bring in for Clark with be better than him. Maybe a tackling dummy?

Looks like the Stamps are going to be short a bunch of starters if they make the West Final.

Honestly idk how you even keep guys like that. We will play now but we won't get the vaxx to play when it counts. Gtfoh idc who it is.

They should just bring in the 5 fattest people they can find. Atleast they could take up room and force the pass rusher to go wider around the edge.

Maybe they should call pop Warner teams and find some ol. Least then they'd get more disciplined players with some heart.
