Around The League Off Season Discussion

Well that loss stung last night. Not happy with the decision to kick the FG but that can be discussed elsewhere :) All in all there was a lot of improvement this year over last year and looking like they are trending upwards. If Walters can pull off another great draft and some more key FAs this offseason I like our chances going into 2017. Who is on the FA watch list and what areas are we in desperate need of fixing?

  • It's been proven, in this league, that if you don't have a good backup....

The Bombers really need to kick the Riders ass sideways in their first game in the new park to set the tone for the season and send their fans off on the crazy train.  Nothing else matters.

  • Riders haven't lost yet so their fans feel emboldened to venture out of their own little bubble. Won't have to wait long for them to scurry back into their holes.

My sources* are telling me Hamilton trades OL Brian Simmons to Montreal for DB Ethan Davis... Montreal has 2 imp tackles now...

It just couldn't happen to a more deserving franchise...

While Best has struggled with injury issues over the past few years, his retirement is a big loss for the Riders. The guys they played at guard last year like Andrew Jones, Matt Vonk and even St John struggled. They still have issues with ni talent and this hurts that too. If Labatte retires or can't go, it gets worse and as I recall Labatte had a serious injury too last year.

I wonder what the Riders would give up to get Neufeld back?

I'm thinking about that too. I wouldn't mind a draft pick. ;)

A guy who can play anywhere on the line would carry some value. Neufeld will make it through camp, but after that.... We'll see....

I've always thought Neufeld would be a perfect 6th man because of his versatility... seems unlikely (or at least less likely) to get hurt if he's only playing sparingly... too bad he's being paid like a starter...

Is he?  I think lots of 6th OL are making in the 100k-120k range.  I'm not sure what Neufeld's salary is.

With Best outta there and Labatte a shadow of his former self..(best years were here) ol Glenn better have his pony watered and ready to ride hard cuz he's going to be on it A LOT..Kevin might be sorry that he didn't hang around here as the back-up before 17' is over..

For some reason the number 160 is in my head... real or conceived? I'm not sure :P

If his salary already has decided his fate he will be gone before camp starts.  I suspect it hasn't.

We will carry 4-5 NI Olinemen somewhere on the roster even if we only start 2.  Chungh, Goossen and Couture makes 3.  Inzandt could be the 4th.  A draft pick could be the 5th.  But maybe neither of those guys are good enough right now, and until there is some certainty there, Walters might be prepared to spend a few more dollars on his depth at NI Olineman and find the savings somewhere else.

Madani says Popp + Trestman to Argos a done deal. Copeland (CEO Argos) didn't particularly want Popp, but they're saying the only way Trestman would come is with Popp, so they had to. Going to be a very interesting situation to follow this summer...

Well, as of Wednesday, the Roughriders had signed nine free agents from other CFL teams — the highest such number in the league.
The Toronto Argonauts were next at eight, followed by the Ottawa Redblacks (six), Edmonton Eskimos (five), B.C. Lions (four), Calgary Stampeders (four), Montreal Alouettes (four), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (three) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (one).
B.C. and Calgary each had re-signed or extended the contracts of 15 of its free agents, with Montreal (14), Ottawa (14), Winnipeg (10), Edmonton (seven), Hamilton (six), Toronto (six) and Saskatchewan (three) rounding out the list.

Scott Mitchell - It’s absolutely amazing that in 8 years with the Stamps Drew Tate threw 572 passes........Bo Levi Mitchell threw 606 last year alone.

Matt Baker - Tony Burnett could be the biggest piece of the puzzle for the Lions. He attended Lions camp in 2014 but there was no way he was cracking the roster. Not with Bighill and Solomon Elimimian entering the most dominant portion of the “Team 100” era.

The #Riders have wasted no time assigning Darian Durant's old no. 4. It will be worn by new safety Marc-Olivier Broulliette. #CFL

Amen to Bobby I calling it........sickens me watching a Gapper skip Manitoba's entry into the Scotties, but love that an also-ran team that curls mostly around Manitoba, and is not one of the contenders on the mighty WCT, is destroying teams at the national Scotties. Says a lot about the depth in our province, and once again, that curling is our game.
