The league changed from the 4 man reserve (game day scratches) a number of years ago.

Teams now can have 1 game day scratch but it doesnt seem like the Bombers have utilized it for the last couple of years. (They used to annouce the game day scratch 1 hour before kick off).

They just put players on the 1 game injured list.

Maybe @DTonOB can provide some insight as he would be given the finalized rosters each game.

The 2022 CBA no longer mentions game-day scratches. It talks about a minimum of 44 and a maximum of 45 players. That 45th could be a second global or another Canadian (presuming a team already has its maximum 19 Americans)

All fair enough. I bet it’s wearing to try and get legit answers.

The best use of the dna I think would’ve been JJ with garbutt/habba to rotate. Or if we had signed lemon.

100%. If Haba (or any backup American DL) was on, DNA Jeffcoat and then you could run a NASCAR package of Jefferson, Jeffcoat, Haba and Walker for 23 snaps. They just didn't appear to want to use those kind of packages. And there weren't a ton of American backups to work in.

@DTonOB I’m curious - can’t say I’ve consumed every ounce of content you’ve put out, I may have missed it somewhere

Has anyone ever asked O’Shea point blank why he ignores some of the competitive advantages we have available to us? I just get this weird feeling we’re on pace for another season of MOS using our roster as his own personal soapbox to sing the praises of Canadian talent and I’m wondering if he’s ever been called out for it

We've asked, for sure. Generally he will not answer strategy or roster questions. And he will push away questions sometimes by saying that he doesn't really understand the rules (when I'd bet he knows them all backwards and forwards).

The DNA rule is the one I think of...he used it for Janarion 5 times last season and I think that was it. He would say he didn't think it would help with the roster they had that week.
I stopped being curious about that because there weren't a ton of games where I thought DNA would make a difference. They started 8 true Canadians (plus the nationalized guy, whoever that was game in, game out). And their rotational defensive linemen were Canadian (Bennett, Lawson, Schemekel).
I guess he could have DNA'd Kyrie Wilson/Bighill thus allowing Cole/Clements to play 23 snaps for Thomas or Kramdi.

As for the players he selects...he would say that Kramdi earned the spot over Darby, for example. There's not a lot to call out in that scenario. There's been more than a few guys over the years where I thought "I don't get it". But, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Is there another competitive advantage you're thinking of?

Bighill out to start the year and not a peep about any of the new linebackers.

Two offensive line spots open and no clue who is out in front of the competiton.

A full draft class and no idea how they’re slotting in yet.

Is Haba/Fox starting just a closed case already? Does anyone want to talk about it?

KJ Hill cut and as per the reporters, he was “a hyped rookie” but absolutely no mention of who may lock that spot down now.

It gets worse every year. @DTonOB explain yourself

Sure. There's a good 30-45 minutes a day on the 680 CJOB Sports Show with Christian. Plus training camp hits in sports at 625, 725, 825, 925am and 325, 425 and 525 pm. And we'll have two hours pre-game Monday starting at 1:00pm. We've hit all those topics over the first 10 days.

Since I've got some time sitting in Regina:

    1) We've seen Shayne Gauthier + Kyrie Wilson / Kyrie + Brian Cole as the LB combos post-Bighill. John Petrishen + Tre Thomas has been another duo from the start. Anyone else isn't getting a ton of work.

    2) Liam Dobson at left guard and Eric Lofton at right tackle every day so far. I think Ted Wyman was the first to touch on it on May 12. The only time it wasn't Dobson a LG was the last day because of injuries to Eli and injury/day off for Kolankowski. Dobson shifted to center for that one.

    3) Michael Chris-Ike is slowly getting more action in a FB/TE roll after his late arrival. Gabe Wallace was getting first-team reps with the injuries to Neufeld and Eli. They are by far the closest to making an impact early in the season. Clercius is down around the 3rd group of receivers. Kalra is much closer than Vlahogiannis. And Leroux is 100% going back to school, so apart from 1 day where we talked about him, we'll catch up with him next year. Gassama and Hubert appear far down the pecking order.

    4) 1st team has been Haba and Fox since day 1.

    5) KJ Hill never seemed to get above the third group. And when he got hurt and wasn't going to recover in time, they released him. Had he appeared with the first team like a Ravi Alston, Ontaria Wilson or Myron Mitchell there would have been more talk about Hill.

There were roughly 8 guys vying for return spots. They *might* be down to 4, but there are virtually no returns in camp. Without full-speed contact, they aren't worth much. Pre-season games are where we'll see who's who.

So those players on the six game, we could bring them back early but no salary savings correct or do we have to sit them week 1?

They must sit Week 1 at least.

Correct on the ability to come off early for no cap savings.

So if Biggie is out week one, who goes in for him? Do they start Gauthier? Move Kyrie to MLB and start Cole at Will? I'd be surprised if they start a rookie linebacker week one. Refresh my memory, Wickman started as a rookie but have we had a rookie linebacker start since?

    Two possibilities from camp:

    1) Gauthier swaps in for Bighill at MIKE.

    2) Wilson moves to MIKE, Brian Cole at WILL

    Cole at SAM is interesting.

Who took the DE spot opposite Jefferson? Garbutt? Habba? Who started at DT, Jake or Lawson?

    Here's what I noted on day 1:

    Bryant-Dobson-Kolankowski-Eli/Wallace(for Neufeld)-Lofton
    Lawler-Schoen-Murphy(for Demski)-Alston-Wolitarsky
    Augustine (for Oliveira)
    Collaros

    Jefferson-Thomas-Fox-Haba
    Wilson-Bighill
    Parker-Nichols-Nick Hallett (for BA)-Holm-Ford-Kramdi

Tyrique McGhee appears right in the mix as well. And it felt like a lot of Lawson with Thomas in the early portion.

So it does count against the SMS then from what I interpret above. If so, holy crap there is a lot of media getting this wrong. Or is it an extra 110k over the SMS spending but subject to extra audit?

The way it's laid out in the CBA says:
For 2024 the "Salary Expenditure Cap" is $5,525,000. Then the "Non-Football Related Services minimum additional amount" is $110,000 for a "Total Salary Expenditure Cap" of $5,635,000.

$110K is the number for this year and is the minimum per year going forward if league revenue doesn't increase (the table in Article 30 lays out the cap through 2028 season). If league revenue does increase, the amount available to players for promotion/outreach would also increase.

To me it reads like 'You have to pay your players exactly $110k on promotion and outreach and you need to be able to prove guys are working for it.'

  8. Got curious about the Brady thing...this from the CBA (Section 30.03 viii B):

"In 2023, each Club will include in the Salary Expenditure Cap an additional $60,000 in respect of Non-Football Related Services, such as community appearances, outreach, and promotion. Starting in 2024 and continuing for every year of the collective agreement, each Club will include in the Salary Expenditure Cap an additional $110,000 in respect of those Non-Football Related Services. These special amounts will be the mandatory minimum amount for each Club and will be subject to strict audit rules. The Clubs will have sole discretion on which players shall received these payments and the amounts to each player, but in no case should these amounts be less than $60,000 per Club in 2023 or less than $110,000 per Club, per year thereafter. These amounts will be included in a player’s SPC and noted accordingly."

They’re generally supposed to vote before playoffs, as to not let playoff performances dictate their opinions. But I’m not 100% sure, @DTonOBcan you elaborate?

Voting happens in 3 phases (team, division, league). The final one had a deadline of kickoff of the Eastern Semi-final. So there's zero chance to consider anything that happens in the playoffs.

I hate that we are continuing to waste a spot on Jackson. That spot could be an extra DB such as Rose or DL such as Fox both of whom would help more that The Seal who is a huge roster spot waste.

From what I saw Tuesday/Wednesday they had taken Jackson off his spot on punt team. Made me think they were preparing in case they had to carry an extra American receiver (if there was doubt that Demski/Bailey would be able to finish the game).

I watched Boudreau run angrily down the sidelines and give him **** after that.  Then O'Shea pulled him aside too.

They were working on the NFL-style tap out in practice early in the week.

I like it *if* you save it from going into the end zone. Giving it to them at the 17 (ie. touch it at the 2 and give the 15-yard No Yards) is better than a single point + possession at the 40.

On the returner issue, heck Derek Taylor mentioned it a few times on the post game. As to the only dressing 6 DL, Doug Brown mentions it every game as an issue. Its not just some of us Dorito eating, Super fans typing away at our keyboards.

There had to be at least 3 times last night where McCrae bobbled to had to double catch the ball. It didn't mean anything for this game, but that's not good.

No extra dbs dressed so when rose or someone gets nicked then what... exume or Hallett? Sorry it is dumb

Just on this point...Darby is dressed. I'd guess he's the DB to fill in if one of the Americans gets hurt. So 9 players for the 6 DB spots.

I think I saw in this thread the suggested that they DNA Darby--that would make perfect sense. It would be a bit of protection for a Kramdi injury
