Ottawa RedBlacks @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers GDT
DTonOB replied to voodoochylde's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
I do have my own database. It's the CFL's play by play and then my charting going back to 2015. I used to have access to the CFL's play-by-play database. It was gone after the switch to Genius, and I'm working at learning how to access their stuff. In the meantime I rip each game's play by play PDF into various Excel files. From there I work on charting, field goals, punting, 2nd/3rd downs, run game, expected vaule of field position...a whole bunch of things that I think have value for future discussions. -

It's all from data I've collected over the years for this kind of situation. The CFL does have a database but I'm not sure what's in the current version (Genius Sports). -

Just pulled out some numbers about the long field goal decision: Kicking: 57-yard field goals had been hit 61% of the time (since 2005) Missed FGs 57 yards and farther had been returned for TD 4% of the time (1/25) Punting: Sheahan's punts from the plus 50: average field position after was the 15 (6 punts) Drives down 4-8 points, 0:40-1:15 remaining starting from the 25 and in: 4 TDs in 18 drives (including the Crumback in 2023) Going for it: 3rd and 1 converted 85% of time 3rd and 2 converted 66% of time (It looked like was 1.5 yards on 3rd down. I really don't think it was a full 2) -
Ayers had 0 in the Week 9 Argos game. And for 17 for the season by my count.

From the scrum: Q: "What's the benefit of the touchdown in that situation when you're already up 6?" Jason Hogan: "Putting the game away. Y'know putting the game away. A 'kill shot' is really all it was. Instead of going up 3 (more) it's putting the game away, making it hard on the opponent. Little more momentum, maybe lifting the bench a little more...confidence booster, all that good stuff." Q: "You don't feel like that same thing applies to being up 9? (blahblah about sergio being 100% FG from there)" JH: "Sergio is going to hit...no doubt about it. But I think defense tries to go 0, 1, 3. We try and go 6, 3. Right? So that's the mindset behind being in the red zone is trying to be...trying to take shots when we need to when they're there. And we felt at that time was the right time."

In case you're curious the CFL told us they use the site AQmap.ca for their readings. It appears to draw from three different companies. The Gate 4 and field sensors at the stadium are through PurpleAir (a poster above referenced them). Why the PurpleAir site and the AQmap site (drawing from PurpleAir) are giving drastically different readings...I can't explain. https://aqmap.ca/aqmap/en/#13/49.7987/-97.1345/B31/L38/L40/L41

I have 4 each for Person and Ayers in Week 7. 3 of Ayers were short yardage. Person had 1 in the first quarter, 3 in the third. Two were lined up inside, two on the edge. For the season (I cleaned up some errors from the last time I posted these): Vaughters - 236 Jefferson - 223 Lawson - 167 Thomas - 167 Adams - 143 Kornelson - 39 Ayers - 16 Person - 4 -
Whenever I get asked about why Mitchell isn't playing I say it's because he's an X wide receiver. And to get him in would require he or Wheatfall changes position. Based on having Case in for Schoen on Sunday I have to believe the Bombers have reservations too. The first day of camp this year they had Mitchell at slot next to Wheatfall. The next day Mitchell was at X with the 2s. And since the end of camp that's where he's stayed. Mitchell has played some slot in his career but the Elks clearly felt he was a WR. For his career I've got him with 151 targets at WR and 55 in the slot--73% WR is pretty high. When they signed Geno Lewis in 2023 they tried Mitchell in the slot but eventually bumped him out to Z. Watching his '24 and '23 Sunday night Mitchell had some real struggles with the waggle...more hesitant than most guys. How much was him and how much was the bad QB situations in Edmonton...who knows.

0 defensive snaps for both through 4 games. 11 for Ayers

Just caught up on snap counts for the season...folks had asked in a different thread. 211 defensive snaps (including penalty plays were the play wasn't stopped early): Vaughters - 189 Jefferson - 182 Thomas - 144 Lawson - 129 Adams - 117 Kornelson - 26
-
He had 2 in the first game, only in goal line. I'm halfway through the 3rd of game 2 and he has 4 in this game. All at defensive end.

While that was the question he answered, it wasn't the question I was asking 🤣

Yessir, 2 hours. I can't wait to set Doug up to rant about Collaros's suspension. He's going to light it on fire again! -

That's a good catch. The table I pulled from has him designated as a DB (where he was expecting to play when we talked in pre-season). Looking at where his snaps came, LB is much more accurate. I counted Cole with 186 snaps. -
Here's what I have for this season for proper Canadians (O-D and total) 1: 6-4 T:10 2: 6-3 T:9 3: 6-3 T:9 4: 7-3 T:10 5: 7-3 T:10 6: 7-4 T:11 7: 7-3 T:10 8: 7-3 T:10 9: 5-3 T:8 10: 5-3 T:8 11: 5-4 T:9 12: 6-3 T:9 13: 6-4 T:10 14: 6-3 T:9 15: 6-3 T:9 16: 6-3 T:9 17: 6-3 T:9 18: 6-3 T:9

Just so I'm clear for tonight...the Nationalized American rule (the 7 CDNs + 1 fake Canadian)? Or the Designated Nationalized American rule (the now-25 snaps one)?
-
For whatever reason the CFL's stats system adds up the total yards of penalties and handed out and writes that instead of yardage assigned to each penalty. Fairly annoying if you're trying to keep track at home.
-
LOL...in the post-game I even prefaced it with "Mike, I know you don't want to hear this but it's for Bombers fans..." I didn't get much past "...tying Bud..." before he took the headset off joking "Oh, can't hear you...static" 🤣

CFL - 2024 Regular Season - Discussion Thread
DTonOB replied to BigBlue's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
As I read the CBA, teams have to spend a *minimum* of $110,000 per year on "Non-Football Related Services". That $110K counts under the Total Salary Expenditure Cap (this season it's $5.635 million. Up to $5.76 million next season). The thought that it doesn't count against the cap is mostly correct. I don't see anything in the CBA that mentions a maximum for "Non-Football Related Services". What I've heard is that the CFL wants teams to "just be cool" about it (ie. don't go nuts and spend a zillion dollars there). It's got to be a tricky spot for owners collectively. If one decides to spendspendspend I can't imagine the rest could do much to stop him. And if I was the players union I would want a MAJOR concession to put a specified limit on that money. -

In the Montreal game they lined up Haba as a standup rusher inside...I counted 6 snaps of that. It was always with Kyrie and Cole at LB, and then Willie & Fox as proper DEs. -
GDT - Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts

It turned out as a little of both. A trainer runs on and gives players some water, and there's a ******* with the flow of the Bombers O. But at a point the officials caught their mistake, and they do start to run the clock with the 20-second clock. (Collaros had to point out that the clock and play clock weren't running together and the officials fixed it. -

O'Shea also pointed to something I hadn't thought of on the PI...that Amos's leg is turning Demski's lower body.
