Hurl - O'Shea; Mentor - Protege: Cloning ?

MOS was one of the greatest Canadian LB's of recent times.

Do you think he is trying to recreate a clone of himself ?

I am very disappointed that our former LB specialist has such poor LB talent surrounding him ... what is wrong with his perceptual skills / mindset, if anything?

I don't think he is starting a player just to prove a point. O'Shea as a player and coach wants nothing more than to win. As a player he did everything in his power within the rules and to the fringes to win. People who think they are playing players to prove points I don't get.

Why did Kuale and Romby play so much last season? I do think Oshea can be stubborn, overly loyal and has his pet projects.

I would like to think he had no other choices. It is extremely hard to believe he would let his stubborness get in the way of winning.

I think Oshea feels that, long term, his loyalty to his players will help with winning.

Your MLB and your DT's are the key positions in stopping the run.  Sask did a good job of getting their OL's to the 2nd level, and our LB's did a poor job of avoiding them. I'm more concerned about our tackles this morning, than I am our LB's.  Admittedly they were not great, but I think a lot of it had to do with the position that the DL put them in by allowing several blockers to the 2nd level.

Really hard in my eyes to evaluate the LB corps after that game, except for Randle, who when he wasn't out of position, he was getting overpowered at SAM.  Get that guy back at halfback ASAP.

You mean corner?... but yes I agree, I think he may stay there til one of the new guys is ready... I think Burnett will be a good candidate

Re-watched the game and kept my eye on Hurl, just doesn't seem to have much of a nose for the ball.  Prefer to see Bass at MLB and Hurl and Newman rotating at OLB.  Randle looked out of place and over-powered at times.  Can't see why they got rid of Unamba honestly as he brought a physical presence to the position.

I don't believe we should overrate Bass and toss a guy like Randle under the bus based on what we've seen. Randle is playing a coverage position. Other than one cover zero blitz where our safety and MLB did not do anything to disrupt Durant, Randle had a clean game.

The Riders run game primarily attacked the weak-side of our defense with stretch plays, and Bass didn't really stand up to it. The DL also had a lot of trouble holding their gaps which shift on those stretch plays. Once the Riders started trying to run between the tackles, the run game fizzled out.

I don't think Hurl was unproductive, I just think he didn't stand out. In the defence we played, everybody has to do their job, be it to fill a gap, or avoid a block or follow the flow. Overall, we did that. When we didn't...a couple of long runs resulted.

I think our weakest position came at safety and Moe being back at safety should correct some of what went wrong. More attention to what the guys were actually supposed to do will result in better contain. And besides, Hamilton doesn't use the run very much.

It's that sharp passing game that I'm a little worried about.

To me Hurl looked lost .... continously in the wrong place

That's how Bass looked to me, continuously letting the ball get past his outside shoulder on the stretch plays to the weak-side for Allen and Messam.  They weren't running at Hurl, and when they did the runs went nowhere.  They really attacked the weak-side, Anderson, Westerman, Bass for the most part.
