Dr Zaius reacted to O2L in Rate Ritchie Hall's Defense
I watch nearly every game across the CFL each week and while I get just as frustrated with our defence as the rest of you, I would say the only defences that are better in the league are Calgary and Saskatchewan, and probably Ottawa although their latest showing is disconcerting.
So that puts us above league average. Frankly, most of the defences in the league are being exploited like crazy and I think that has a lot to do with the modern PI and illegal contact rules.
For several weeks our secondary has had some first year guys due to injury and we’ve still shown well, including sitting near the top in takeaways. I believe that we’ve been making mental errors where someone is out of position on a play. When guys are in position, they tend to win their battles (with the exception of the Edmonton season opener).
The only thing that drives me nuts are how successful other teams are with five to ten yard outs on the wide side, but when you consider that that is rarely, if ever, a first read, it means we’re taking away what the QB actually wants.
Hall over the last few weeks has let his front four do their jobs more often and been smarter about when to blitz and who is blitzing. Maybe just maybe we’ll see some progress.
For those of you that don’t watch every game and complain when Reilly or Masoli puts up 300+ yards on us, try to remember that they do that against virtually everyone they play. It becomes very easy to complain about what we’ve got when we’re not comparing it to the rest of the league, the same way we sometimes see our guys as all stars and forget that other teams have good players too.
Our defence is also very disciplined in terms of penalties, rarely being the team that hands over free first downs (with a few exceptions). That’s worth something.
I still have the bitter taste of last season’s western final (and season as a whole) in my mouth, as I’m sure we all do, so that definitely creates a bias, but so far this season, this defence has been pretty decent. Let’s see if that remains true on Friday or not.

You'd be excited if we went from being a Conference Finals team to bottom of the league just to draft a 5'10 centre...  ummm...

Not a very good example to young people is it?
I think It's an embarrassment for the league.
People rag on Chris Jones. and this display gets a pass?
If Duron did this, you'd be all over him.
If any player did this, they'd be benched.

If Edmonton is happy with their weak, childish coach, good for them. But I'd be embarrassed if it was a Bomber coach doing that.

    East turtle derby rages on.
Manziel named chief fireman to extinguish 4 alarm diaper fire that is their team.
Cats running out of opportunities  to prove the Jones/Masoli/Run&Shoot thing wasn't the wrong decision to hitch franchise to.
Dunno if a HAM win means much but a loss certainly does.
Note: Zontar will be in attendance tonight.

A small part. Loffler is the type of guy who sells out for big hits. And he has had a lot of whiffs this year, with very few game altering hits. I was at last weeks game and paid most of my attention while we were on D to loffler. What i saw was him seemingly to be slow in decisions and first step. Previously He came up and played a very shallow S position. he made most of our Mlber range tackles while hurl was pushed around by linemen. This year, bighill and jsk are covering more of the middle deep range that loffler covered in the past. When his decision is clear on who to take he does ok. When it isnt, when qbs look him off, when he faces double moves he is struggling. He made some un needed blind side turns rather then speed turning in the direction of the play, etc.
What we seem to be doing more of especially in that game, is sending mo deep. On the plays where mo was the deepest man, or we had 2 deep / quarters loffler did a lot better. His best play has come when he is coming up and making plays on ball carriers / pass attempts. Running down hill and laying the wood.
Last year we saw more and more teams exploit the lack of deep help. Loffler is best in the box, or at the back end of the box, and under neath on a robber level. Still a good player, if some what limited he just doesnt fit too well right now. We will have to wait and see if he can adapt in his new role or if we can make it easier more with the deeper help from some one else. He isnt hurl bad on the back end by any means.

Some will say that we haven't beaten a good offense yet...but I contend that I have seen improvements in this defense in the last 3-4 games. With Brandan Alexander back and with Sayles getting valuable playing experience I see the makings of possibly a top 3 defense. Our linebackers are now the strength of this defense...IMHO the best linebackers we have had since the late '80's/early 90's days.

Tons of qbs do well off the bench but struggle when  they are the starter. Bridge caught lightning in a bottle last year spelling off the very different Glenn but that wasn't even that impressive. Was still broken plays that he did everything on. Bridge will not ever become what you think he will. I ain't cherry picking anything by the way, you compared a raw rookie to a guy with 4 seasons under his belt.

By far the worst tonight was Suitor.... even in the last minute brings up Manziel and says it was a close game and blames the refs....  keeps pumping Franklins tires despite him putting up 4 terrible turnovers alone....

The Ball penalty needs to be called 100% of the time.  Way late and how you end up with an injury list full of stars.

Don't base an import position's production based on the previous player. Throw what Bowman did out the window. A Tompkins or Washington...heck even a Lankford over the long haul will be far more productive and garner far more attention from a defense than a Lafrance..Augustine (both of whom aren't receiver options)..Peterman or a Simonese...tho a Simonese on the rail would be the best route to take if you went 3 Canucks.
Playing 2 rookie Canadians with Demski makes us weaker....and thats not even debatable...also...you just lost your depth if one gets hurt...and as the old adage goes...every rookie you start you are going to lose a game...so with Sayles..Cooper..Streveler already having started thats our 3 losses..we don't need the extra couple in a tough west division
Peterman and Simonese ...and really Lafrance havn't proven jack yet so not sure why that would be considered an upgrade. And honestly I think Augustine is a better back than Lafrance...but thats just my opinion

Kavis is worse than Mack. At least Mack found noteworthy American talent.
Kavis is a cat with 9 lives that's been in the right place at the right time over and over.
NO freaking way he should ever have been a HC, nevermind GM.
what is this, the government? Does job performance not matter and seniority does?
He's gotta hit the bricks for the good of the league

Kavis is worse then Taman. At least Taman traded picks for proven vets. Tony Washington is a good pick up but those first round picks should of not been included in this trade. Terribly one sided. Montreal should of had at least one more proven starter included.
Hamilton is rolling with Masoli but for that offer I definitely risk giving up the backup QB. I'm sure they can get Bridge for a CB from Riderville.

Granted there are other parts to the deal, but 2 first round picks and a Canadian starter for a QB that hasn't played a down yet is beyond lunacy.
