"The Ottawa RedBlacks have modified the name of their mascot from "Big Joe Mufferaw" to simply "Big Joe," after receiving criticism from the region's Francophone community." - CBC News

Well, there's only one more way to shorten that name now.

Sigh...kow-towing to the French yet again...

Except in the Capital Region, the French are a sizable community. 15% have French as a first language, and over 35% are bilingual.

Why they wouldn't come up with a French version of the name to begin with is the real question. But also, why did coming up with a French version mean shortening the English one? Everything this team does makes you scratch your head. Are they trying to emulate the Bombers circa 2012-13?

Wasnt he a Francophone folk hero?  Why was that offensive to Francophones?

According to the link posted by comedygeek, French Canadians use his actually surname of Montferrand - Mufferaw was originally a spelling used by people who couldn't spell the name properly. Or maybe they had a problem with a real folk hero being used as a mascot.
