After Week 8
Bye - Ottawa

?‍?I will try to post with some class...

?‍? Wally's wise words:
Iain MacIntyre - the Province
“We’re not going to play scared,” Wally Buono, the new-old coach who hired himself to replace Jeff Tedford, said of the Lions first play from scrimmage. “I don’t want us to play scared. I want us to be aggressive. Aggressive sometimes means you get big and run the football, and other times it means you throw the ball downfield. We’re not afraid of anybody. Tonight we were better. You respect your opponents, but you don’t fear them.”

37: The number of days the Lions will have gone between home games when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats visit Vancouver a week from Saturday. It is the longest in-season stretch without a home game in franchise history, which makes the Lions’ 4-2 start even more impressive. B.C. is already 3-1 on the road.

0: The number of significant injuries the Lions sustained – as far as coach Wally Buono knew at press time – one week after B.C. lost five players on defence, four of them starters, in Calgary. One of the replacements, defensive tackle Bryan Turner, had four tackles and two sacks.

?‍? Forgot to mention JC Sherritt's impressive dive for a TD after that deflected boot by Williams

?‍? more kudos for the fans of Winnipeg:
Don Landry - CFL
"Have to hand it to the good people of the ‘Peg. So many of them waited out a storm delay on Wednesday night, one that saw the Blue Bombers’ game versus Hamilton starting pretty well when it should have been ending. For two and a half hours, they milled about under the partial roof of IGF and whiled away the time by watching baseball on the big screen."

- Bryan Burnham is giving BC a kind of Luke Tasker, Brad Sinopoli, Marquay McDaniel vacuum cleaner option week in and week out. The kind of receiver that keeps the first downs coming and provides even more opportunity for guys like Shawn Gore and the Manny Show to shine.

- Hey, Smilin’ Hank. All good now? Or do we give you a new nickname?
Rilin’ Hank.

The team was scheduled to practice Monday but cancelled practice to opt for more rest time.
(?‍?Edmonton hosts Montreal Thursday, August 11)
-the team signed Internatioal defensive backs Brandyn Thompson and Demetrius Wright.
The Eskimos made a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders acquiring National linebacker Alex Ogbongbemiga in exchange for National defensive lineman Gregory Alexandre.  Ogbongbehmiga was a 2016 third round draft pick of the Riders and in played one game this season.
The Eskimos have released International defensive back Deion Belue who registered eight defensive tackles in three games this season.

Ben Matchett
Tom Higgins has joined the Calgary Dinos as Defensive Co-ordinator.

Justin Dunk - CFL.ca
Quarterbacks who threw for more than 300 yards went 3-1 in Week 7 – the lone exception was Matt Nichols needing just 246 yards through the air to help Winnipeg score 34 straight lightning delayed points. Every pivot that completed over 67 percent of their throws won too.

Ed Tait - on probably starting Foketi at right tackle:
The Bombers have been chasing Foketi for a while now after the West Texas A&M product signed with Denver in 2013 and attended their Florida mini-camp in 2014 before staying with New Orleans through preseason that year.
“Manase Foketi is a guy that we’ve liked for a number of years and we finally got him up here,” said Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea. “We do expect him to jump right in. He’s been here with us through camp. He’s a very athletic football player. He’s quiet, but he knows what he’s doing and he’s been very patient.

Lot of #CFL scouts in camp (LA Rams camp). Saw Edmonton last week. Toronto and Winnipeg today.

Doug Brown reports
Prior to Matt Nichols last two starts, the Bomber offence "possessed the ball" 27 minutes a game. After Nichols, it's up to 34 minutes a game..
?‍?So, 7 minutes more to do something, or to put it another way, 7 minutes less for the opposition to do something. And that's worked too.
80 yards difference per game less against the D. And 10 points less because of the extra time on Offence.
?‍?See the trend? The offence has to produce so that the defence can stop the opposition from producing.
Special teams has helped immensely in that regard too....for field position.

“I bounced around the (NFL) and decided to give the CFL a shot,” said Foketi, who signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2013 but was released near the end of training camp. “I had always pushed it off, but this year I decided to go with it. Player of the Week: Jerome Messam
Messam had 17 carries for 109 yards and one touchdown in the game. His impact was not only restrict to the ground game as he caught five passes for 36 yards.
Messam made his impact felt in the fourth quarter when the Stamps needed to close out the win. In the quarter, he had nine carries for 72 yards and had one-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, he had three large runs of 19-yards, 15-yards and 11-yards. He was responsible for six out of 35 points scored by the Stamps, but on the drives in which he carried the ball, the Stamps scored 22 out of 35 points.
After his great performance on Thursday night, Messam now leads the CFL in rushing with 404 yards.

From some of the responses I am getting to my question, maybe the #BCLions need to revisit blacking out a few home games.

?‍?The Blue Bomber QBs have to be extra careful before they 'throw up' a ball for Thomas Mayo to run under. Jeff Hamilton reports that before each game, Mayo, literally, 'throws up on his own'.
?‍?No surprise that the Stampeders got 50% of the vote in a fan poll by CFL.ca for the question - "Which CFL team is deepest in Canadian talent?"
....Bombers were fifth at 8%

Ed Tait
Mike O'Shea on returning to TO: "I'm a Winnipegger. I'm a Blue Bomber. This feels right. I don't think that way any more."

?‍?I have to agree with Lawless when he says it's a big loss for the CFL to lose Scott Mitchell, who leaves his post to cover the MLB Toronto Blue Jays.

Kirk Penton's INSIDER:

CFL coaches and managers give their anonymous thoughts on what they’re talking about behind closed doors:
-Edmonton needs to run the ball more. (Mike) Reilly is getting the (bleep) knocked out of him ...
I keep telling my young guys, coaching is putting players in position to make plays. Moving Shawn Gore to the boundary side has him playing like an all-star. He’s a Most Outstanding Canadian candidate if he keeps playing like this ...
-The Stamps are the best team right now and the quarterback (Bo Levi Mitchell) is driving them. They are getting some guys back, so they are almost back to the roster they planned to dress. They’re going younger at some spots, and those guys need to be consistent ...
-My co-ordinators say that none of those TSN panel guys have called them. They’ve never called me. Never been to one of my practices this year. I understand why (Henry) Burris went off on them. They have all the answers and they don’t know (bleep) ...
-(Jerome) Messam is a (bleep). We’ve told our guys that making him run laterally is the best way to slow him down. When his shoulders are square, he’s a big (bleeper) running down hill ...
-I wanted to puke watching Winnipeg beat Hamilton. They just out-coached them. Now we have to worry about the Bombers because those two wins over Hamilton gives them a shot. They might make the (bleeping) playoffs in our division ...
-Nothing changes with Drew Willy in Winnipeg. There’s no way he takes an in-season pay cut — unless he plays for Jim Popp. I’ve seen lots of quarterbacks play a few good games, so (Matt) Nichols isn’t the new No. 1 there yet ...
-If the Riders’ struggles continue, they won’t accept a down season and walk into a new facility with no changes. With (Chris) Jones having a guaranteed contract and (Jeremy) O’Day having off-field ties to the community, the hot seat will belong to (John) Murphy even though he had all that success in Calgary ...
-Burris is throwing more and more wobblers and his deep accuracy isn’t as good as it was a few years ago. But I was done by my early 30s and he’s still playing and doing some good things at 40 ...
-I’ve coached against Wally (Buono) in the past, but I’m watching what he’s doing in B.C. this time and he’s showing us why he wins. They really don’t try to fool you. They’re basic, sound and tough on both sides of the ball. Fundamentals instead of scheme ...
-Saskatchewan’s offensive line is playing better lately than I thought they would. They’ve had a lot of injuries in that group ...
-(Boris) Bede is an import, so it makes it tougher to keep giving him chances because they have a wide variety of options. Players like the loyalty, but it’s tough if you keep losing games ...
-Hank (Burris) made some good points, but it’s always how and when you make them. No quarterback wants to be judged that way ...
-(Kent) Austin keeps running the same plays out of the same formations. It’s what he did in Toronto and what he did over there in Saskatchewan. The film doesn’t lie. We know he’s going to his scissors concept when he gets under pressure.

-BY THE NUMBERS
54 – Percentage of successful two-point convert attempts this season.
12 – Turnovers committed by the Ticats in their two games against the Bombers this season.
+8 – Winnipeg’s turnover ratio, which leads the league.
59 – Percentage of successful one-point convert kicks by Calgary’s Rene Paredes.

In a decision that is better late than never, Jim Popp is finally going to replace Boris Bede as the Alouettes kicker this week.
The young sophomore out of Laval has made only seven of 16 field goal attempts this season, although he’s a surprising 11-for-11 when it comes to converts.

?‍?It now looks like the CFL should have a separate, weekly section exclusively for Chris Jones news...

Ed Tait
“This is one of the more injury-plagued seasons I’ve seen through the first half of a year,” said quarterback Matt Nichols. “We’ve had six new starters on defence in one game. Same on offence. We had three receivers go down in one game in Edmonton and guys just stepped in and did their job. That shows me this team is buying in to being ready when it’s your turn.

?‍?It now looks like the CFL not only has to keep track of the Nationals, going in and out of the lineup in Saskatchewan, but also will have to get facial recognition software for all the 'extras' going in and out of the lineup.

Murray McCormick - Regina Leader Post
The Riders announced the signing of national quarterback Brandon Bridge on Wednesday. He was released by the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 1. Bridge is one of five quarterbacks on the active roster. Since mini-camp in April, the Riders have had 12 quarterbacks on the roster, practice roster or injured lists …

?‍?It's absolutely untrue that Masoli, upon hearing of his demotion to backup with the return of Collaros, phoned firstly, Kevin Glenn to ask for guidance, nor did he phone Henry Burris to ask for advice going forward...

?‍?Tumble and roll celebrations are at an all time low in Edmonton as the Eskimos are 8th in sacks this year with 11....Ahead of the Riders 8
Bombers currently sit with 14, like Calgary, and trail Hamilton and BC at 22, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto are at 15.

Sources tell Herb Zurkowsky, of the Montreal gazette, the Alouettes’ Jim Popp threatened sweeping changes while addressing the team at Olympic Stadium.
"Popp threatened the players, starting with his offensive-lineman, stating they run the risk of being replaced by rookies earning minimum salary. But he then brought the rest of the team into focus, suggesting no player was irreplaceable while serving notice their play must improve or they risk unemployment."

AND - “The damage is done. How does he survive this?” said one longtime CFL executive. “No matter how bad it gets, you can’t say that.”
.....“You don’t know what I said. You can question (it) all you want,” Popp said. “You can hear someone mumble. That’s fine. Maybe those are the guys that are in trouble?”
.....“The room’s hanging on by a thread. Sunday’s speech, combined with this travel schedule and bull—- stadium walkthrough ain’t helping his cause,” another player texted. “It could get ugly if it goes bad tomorrow.”(Thurs game Aug 11)

"the Roughriders are indeed stretching those rules beyond the intended means. During their incessant roster shuffling they have gone through 12 quarterbacks since training camp and, according to CFL transactions, made 190 official roster moves. That’s a little higher than normal; for example Calgary recorded only 142 transactions since June 1."

CFL game notes - CFL.ca staff

Stoppages on the decline: Three of four games in Week 7 clocked in at 2:46 or under, while last week’s games had only seven total challenges — the lowest for any week during the 2016 campaign. Meanwhile, three of four games recorded 19 or fewer penalties, reducing the average to 19.7 penalties per game (a 24 per cent drop from this time last season).

Red zone struggles: The offences struggled to produce in the red zone last weekend, scoring only 13 touchdowns on 29 red zone trips (45 per cent).

Closing the gap: Road teams continue to hold a substantial edge this season, winning 17 times and adding a tie in 28 games — but home teams are closing the gap after going 3-1 in Week 7.

The 2,000-yard club? Only three players have reached the elusive 2,000 receiving yards club in CFL history (Allen Pitts, Terry Greer and Derrell Mitchell), but Derel Walker (668 yards) and Adarius Bowman (682 yards) are both on pace to eclipse that mark.

Reilly’s pace slows: Mike Reilly’s pace has slowed after landing under the 300 passing yard mark for the first time this season in Week 7, but he still projects to throw for 6,543 passing yards — a pace that would put him second all-time on the single-season list behind only Doug Flutie’s record of 6,619 set in 1991.

Chris Jones, the head coach and general manager of the Riders, was quoted in the Leader Post, “I really don’t care what other people say about us”. Jones continuedafter Wednesday’s practice at Mosaic Stadium. “I’ve always been one of those people who do what I do. If they don’t like us, then great.”
What would have been a more fitting punishment? Should the Riders have had to forfeit their win from earlier this season? Should Jones have been suspended for a couple of games? The latter may have been the best course to take. Chris Jones should have been fined and suspended for a couple of weeks. The league had a great opportunity to come down hard enough in this case to deter this activity.

Eric M. CFL
Can't say enough about #Bombers D-line. They completely took advantage of the #Argos starting two backups at C & RG. Run defense was unreal.

#Bombers' offense played throwback, West Division football. Run the ball physically down #Argos' throats when everyone knew it was coming.

The Alouettes failed to find the end zone, scoring their 12 points on a 4-of-5 effort from newcomer Anthony Fera on field goals.
The Eskimos stringed together their 23 points on two field goals, two safeties, a quarterback sneak on third down and an interception returned for a touchdown — and did so despite losing three fumbles throughout the contest.
Derel Walker had a game-high 132 receiving yards on 10 catches. Adarius Bowman added 107 yards on nine catches as the league’s top receiving duo once again proved unstoppable.
Duron Carter was held to just three catches for 28 yards despite a team-high 10 targets, ending a run of three consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards.

?‍?A really big play in the scheme of things in the Bomber game came after Nichols threw his 1st interception of the year. I know I sagged there, and was hoping we could hold them to only a FG. Then things got Foggy, with Kevin Fogg's great interception on Kilgore. The game had changed. We got our mojo back at that point, and the game as on.
Fogg - two interceptions, a sack, four tackles, a fumble recovery and 118 yards in kick returns. - Ed Tait

?‍?Harris 19 carries for 123 yards and a tough run and toss for a TD. The 'tough' part was Harris, the 'toss' part was Goosen, who practically threw Harris into the end zone. Brilliant. Harris has 2 of the 5 100 game rushing totals this year. - Ed Tait.

*According to 3 Down Nation’s John Hodge, the Bombers surrendered an average of 3.2 sacks-per-game with Drew Willy at the helm. Under Nichols, who’s decisiveness and movement in the pocket is the difference, the average sack-rate has dropped to 1.66 sacks-per-game since making the switch at quarterback.

*john hodge Bomber Buzz
Fogg also told CJOB 680 after the game that he will be staying in Winnipeg over the bye to focus on football, a rare and impressive decision from a first-year player.

-Some will be quick to point out that the Bombers have won their past two games over back-up quarterbacks, but let’s give Jeremiah Masoli and Logan Kilgore some credit: the pair is a combined 4-1 when not facing Winnipeg this season. All you can do is beat the team in front of you, and the Bombers have done just that despite a number of injuries to key players.

?‍?As mentioned by Hodge, Manase Foketi's name wasn't really mentioned in the game...a good thing.

*The Bombers now have a league-leading 27 takeaways in eight games this season. The team in second place? Toronto (16).
*Bomber strong-side linebacker Moe Leggett now has twice as many pick-sixes this season (2) as the Saskatchewan Roughriders have interceptions (1).
*Nichols has recorded just one turnover this season, a second quarter interception to Argonaut safety Thomas Gordon. To Nichols’ credit it was clear from TSN’s reverse angle that the pick came as a result of a poor route from first-year man Kris Adams. Aside from Adams’ mistake, Nichols has played clean football.

Lowell Ullrich, The Canadian Press - Jennings - only the fourth B.C. quarterback in franchise history to throw for 300 yards in four straight games.
The win by B.C. (5-2) sets up a battle Friday for first place with the Calgary Stampeders (5-1-1), with the season series between the teams on the line.
?‍?So much for the prognostications of BC doing poorly this year...

?‍?This just in - CFL updated standings...

Took 6 weeks for the CFL to hear the Carter suspension appeal. That is a joke.

You know the CFL does not hear the appeal and the arbitration process is set out in the CBA.

The incident occurred June 30. CFLPA confirms on July 7 that an appeal was filed.

From the CBA... CFL and CFLPA have to provide possible dates for the hearing to the arbitrator. Both the League and the CFLPA have to disclose witness lists, exhibits, etc 20 days before the arbitration hearing. The arbitrator has 30 to give a decision.

Don't care. It's still a joke. The entire process.

?‍?No surprise that the Stampeders got 50% of the vote in a fan poll by CFL.ca for the question - "Which CFL team is deepest in Canadian talent?"
....Bombers were fifth at 8%

It's a pretty safe bet that most CFL fans outside of Winnipeg have absolutely no idea what kind of Canadian depth we have....

I'd like to see Carter's suspension be enforced next week against us.

No way- I want him to be humbled by our D

I want a hit layed on him, like the one Wild put on Spencer last game... the helmet-a-flyin' type of hit.

Then watch him try to chest bump MoS...

I just realized... we have the toughest Head Coach in the CFL...

I'd love to see him try that on O'Shea. He'd just stare a hole through him...

Our HC/GM/CEO combo has to be the toughest group in the league. Linebacker/safety/fullback.

I've been saying that for awhile...angry SOBs, The Trinity........if Jones had tried that "be classy" stomach tap bullshit on MOS, I'm confident MOS could pick him up with one hand, Undertaker style. He's a big man who could get real angry, real quick...

And Tennessee Corky would squeal like a stuck pig.  Glorious! That image is very satisfying.
