And yeah...he will have to find the perfect situation with a team willing and wanting to run gimicks...and have a supporting cast now to allow for it...and again...those spots are pretty far and few between

I wish Streveler the best with his NFL tryouts, like all former CFL players. But, the Taysom Hill model is one of a kind for a reason. There have to be a lot of factors involved to make it work. Supporting cast - as you indicated. The Saints have a legitimate back up QB who was an NFL starter - Teddy Brigdewater - and a hall of famer at QB. So, they're more likely to use a roster spot for a Swiss army knife QB hybrid than most teams. Most NFL teams dress two QB's and load up on other rotational players for game day - DE, WR, DB. Plus, the Saints have Sean Payton - great offensive coach and a real innovator. Not sure many OC's could use that type of player as well as he has.

I just think that we're not going to see a huge uptick in NFL teams looking to replicate what the Saints have. That said, I could see Streveler sitting on a practice roster for a season down there.

I was happy to read Walter's comments on how much work the Global Scouting is.  I mean its too bad its so much extra work but I'm happy that he doesn't view the work as optional.  There was a time before Walters took over where Winnipeg wasn't even willing to turn over every stone to find a helpful Canadian player.  I remember talking to a CFL agent at that time when Winnipeg had serious snapping problems and they weren't even willing to go an look at a decent young snapper who was living in Winnipeg who ended up signing with a different team. Like they wouldn't even put in the effort. Now Winnipeg is clearly of the mindset that if there is going to be global roster spots they will do whatever it takes to maximize the talent they will be bringing in for those roles.  Its refreshing and no wonder Winnipeg ended up with the best global player from last year.

Definitely. I know a lot of people dump on Ambrosie's global CFL 2.0 plan. But, I give the CFL credit for trying an approach that at least may find some talent elsewhere, is innovative,  and might increase fan interest in other countries.

Been doing a little bit a research on the quality of talent being made available for the global draft.  Winnipeg is in a good position because they already have an impact player but next season there will be two players on the roster and 3 more on the practice roster. Given that Winnipeg won the Cup I guess i'm assuming we will be picking 9th overall. I think last year the draft order was random. Clearly that would benefit Winnipeg. However, I'm trying to get a sense for whether or not there will be 9 players of substance available in case we draft 9th overall.  Well.  Its hard to research but most of the nations have released lists of available players and there is already some pretty good talent I can identify.  Finland has 2 players who played American college ball. They are defensive lineman and didn't do a whole lot in college but its still better than nothing. France actually seems to have the best high end talent. They have three players who were good enough to get NFL shots included 2 receivers and 1 6 foot 4 defensive back. The two receivers went back to Germany and played after their NFL cracks didn't pan out and both were highly productive in the the GFL.  Germany has a large list of players available. And I feel like German typically has the most talent available out of all the global nations. One of the players on the German list was one of the top runningbacks in the GFL.  Maybe he can use that speed and strength to be a pretty good special teams player. Another German League player was one of the best pass rusher's in the league.  Maybe he's another Hansen? Mexico has not yet released a list of available players. That could be the real wildcard.  But based on the limited amount of research you can do from a keyboard and mouse I do feel like the level of talent available will be much deeper than last year where they basically ended up being one high quality player in Thiadric Hansen.

Thanks for posting this! I know the global players thing is probably annoying for CFL GM's and coaches. But, it's fascinating from the perspective of trying to find some really raw talent. The Bombers found a real gem in Hansen. Could become a rotational pass rusher.

The Canadian Football League (@CFL😞 where you can get arrested not once, not twice but for 3 incidents for DUI, including driving the wrong way and crashing into a bus. Welcome to the #Bombers Dylan Donahue, who was also suspended 14 games in '18 for violating substance abuse.

Jeff Hamilton @jeffkhamilton 50m50 minutes ago

My mistake, arrested twice for two incidents, the most recent in 2018. Point still stands.

I'm not sure I understand Jeff Hamilton's take on this. Is he saying that the CFL should not allow any players who have had legal problems to play? Because that's one of the reasons why some talented players end up here - i.e. Willie Jefferson and many, many others. We've always been kind of a second chance league.

Or, is his take that we should only allow players that have had certain types of legal problems? I think the CFL already does that, at least to an extent. Past DUI's and marijuana charges - seem to not entirely exclude players from trying out, depending on the circumstances. Serious legal issues - assault, murder, etc - I think the CFL bans those players entirely. Example - Ray Rice. I seem to remember the CFL making a statement saying he would never be allowed to play here, which makes total sense.

I also trust that the Bombers are pretty good on doing their due diligence. Walters and O'Shea seem pretty good at choosing character players. You'd have to think that perhaps this player has learned from his transgressions, and perhaps even is dealing with any substance abuse issues. Seems like Hamilton forgets that people are capable of doing that.

I guess I'm a bit confused by Hamilton's takes on things. And still salty that he was one of the anti Harris for MOP ring leaders.

And the biggest welfare recipient in the CFL has it's hand out once again.  Almost 3 million people in Toronto and they can't find 20,000 to come to an Argos game.  No one in TO cares about the Argos of the CFL yet, "we need them".

I agree that priority number one in Toronto and Vancouver is improve attendance. Not sure how, but, that would be my mandate to everyone involved in both clubs. Housing costs are definitely higher there. But, as many have indicated, there are advantages to attract and retain players that both cities have over Winnipeg, Regina ... Getting a slightly bigger piece of the housing allowance pie doesn't move the needle much in terms of the financial bottom line for either club. It's rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. "Sell some f'ing tickets! Get more paying fans! Be closers!!!"

The big question about Nichols is the degree of recovery of his shoulder.  If he is not ready to go by May, that would signal that he may not ever be the same quarterback again.

Agree. And unfortunately, a decision has to be made on him soon. January or February. And if you do sign him, for how much? Do you base it on actual recovery or anticipated recovery? Tough decision.

  7. 10 players from each CFL team's negotiation list. Bombers have QB Taylor Heinicke on it. There was a time when the Vikings were quite high on him as a back up QB, until he cut his foot kicking a glass door. A bit undersized for the NFL, could be a good CFL prospect. Plus, he's not on an NFL roster at present. Allocated to the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL. We might see him in camp, to add more fuel to our QB debating.

Zack is gonna have to I think accept the fact he is going to get a moderate upfront signing bonus...the 150 to 200k ones waved bye bye after last year, and a decent base with large play-time bonuses...protects his team, and gets him paid well if he can stay on the field..any team that gives him 200k again before the first snap of the season and then hard money totaling 250 to 350k more as the base salary spread over the season should have their G.M shot

Agree. I'd say the same thing for Nichols contract. At his age, modest resume, and coming off throwing shoulder surgery. Whoever signs him should (key word) give him a modest contract with incentives. Signing him for $500K base salary or more per year is a fireable offence.

This notion in people minds that Streveler can't pass is ludicrous

I hope so. Not 100% convinced he's a CFL starter level in terms of his passing ability. I'd be willing to sign him (cheaply) and find out. But, I also won't be surprised if McGuire ends up being the better overall CFL QB. His passing mechanics look so much better. I'm not sure Streveler's strengths (running, toughness) outnumber his weaknesses (arm strength, accuracy, pocket presence, vision). Let's hope. If he puts it all together we have Tracy Ham at QB for us.

Ummm...  its basically true - the wheels came off and we limped into the playoffs

Its strange how all of us think its critical that Streveler stays... but his 1400 yards and 9:14 TD-INT ratio really is awful

Yet I'd still sign him ha

Ha! So true with Streveler. If you asked a random NFL football fan who didn't know the Bombers if 1400 yards and 9:14 TD-INT ratio is good or bad for a QB, they'd reply it's terrible! Yet, we (me included) love Streveler, and want to re-sign him. A bit illogical. Potential I guess? I will say my caveat is I would sign him relatively "cheap". If he or his agent start getting stars in their eyes, I would point to his stats, and be prepared to let another team overpay him.

  11. 35 minutes ago, Booch said:

I think too...regardless of who we sign we will be paying between 550k to 750k for our QB's...what order they play on depth chart, or who is the starter I don't care..whoever is giving us the best chance in each game to win is all that matters...the money will still be paid regardless

That to me is key - setting a QB budget in that range for all QB's. I'd be really wary of paying the $750 K plus for a starting elite QB. Reilly and BLM are by far the best QB's, but, really impacts your roster elsewhere, and in reality didn't win a Grey Cup for either BC or Calgary. There's absolutely no other QB's in the CFL I would pay that kind of money for. I'd shoot for Streveler, McGuire and veteran CFL TBD for $750K or less.

  12. I'm surprised that Andrew Seinet-Spaulding, DT from McGill is not on the top 20 scouting list. JP Metras winner for outstanding lineman. I watched most of the McGill games, and saw him in person twice. Led the RSEQ in sacks from DT, being doubled teamed constantly. He's a CFL talent. I'm sure Kyle Walters is aware of him.

Wake was also just turning 26..Willie will be 29...those 3 years in NFL eyes are big...also he has no PR eligibility left, and would not be making NFL minimum..so SMS..age..Politics of NFL are all against him, but as an athlete he no doubt belongs down there

Totally agree. Willie is an NFL talent, but, that doesn't mean he makes an NFL roster, for the reasons you outlined. My gut says he returns to the Bombers. Kongbo is gone I'd say. He'll make an NFL practice roster for sure based on age, potential and SEC resume.

Only if you have a good team already. If not, draft by need & what is available. Let's say we were  7-11 team but Harris was our running back & the CFL leading rusher. Let's say one of our problems was a porous OL. Now the best player available was a RB but there was also a potentially great right guard also available. What purpose would it serve to draft the RB even if he was the best player available? He'd be playing behind Harris & with the next selection the Riders would take the guard & we all know it.

What you're saying makes sense. The CFL draft is definitely the toughest amateur draft. I was saying  it's best not to fall into Joe Mack syndrome - choosing BPA even if everyone knows they're a legitimate NFL prospect. Hubbard is a Heisman trophy candidate; Gallimore is a 300 lb athletic freak projected to go first or second round in the NFL draft. A CFL GM is a fool taking either one of those players as high as the first round in the CFL draft. 5th, 6th round ... sure, take a chance. But anything else is a wasted pick. Try whenever possible to pick players that are available to play right away and hopefully contribute. Walters has been excellent at that.

any player is at risk to being put out in one hit...but a player coming back from knee surgery..shoulder surgery...whatever surgery...you know where they are at structurally, progression wise..strength...basically the whole gamut and nowaday's coming back from a structural repair a lot of times you come back stronger and better with less chance to re-injure that again...tho it can happen but if it did, it would have happened anyway without prior injury...90 percent of the time

Concussion..head/brain injury so many unknowns...and it's a compounding injury, which never..ever heals...just subsides until the next trauma..and takes longer and longer to subside again to function right..and it can occur from hits, and pounding that doesn't involve the head..which a lot of people don't realize..and sometimes from a really seemingly insignificant impact..or even just a fall to the ground..

As much upside there could be to Collaros...there is way too much downside and unknowns there it's not worth the risk..you can repar and rehab an injury and come back just as good..and even better, and you know pretty finite timelines for it....with the noodle...nope...Thanks for the work Zack and getting us that Cup, but enjoy Southern Ontario

Agree. I would add that while shoulder, knee, etc. injuries are easier to recover from given treatment and surgery options, you have to consider type of injury and position. ACL surgery for a QB isn't as bad as it is for a RB or WR. It does limit mobility, but, a QB really just needs to escape pressure and have a quick release. Tom Brady has has multiple knee surgeries. Recovery from dominant arm shoulder surgery for a QB - now you've got me worried. Especially an older QB (Nichols). Versus shoulder surgery recovery for a WR  which isn't really a big concern.

It's the overall package. Teams in the NFL are looking to innovate and do something you either don't see or don't see often. They're not looking for a QB or FB or RB, they're looking for a football player who can provide flexibility and offer a threat that teams have to think twice about to defend. There aren't many players in the NFL who can line up as a runner, passer or receiver and hurt you. Streveler can.

You might be right. And if he gets an NFL shot, great for him. I'm always rooting for any CFL player to make an NFL roster when they get a shot. It's a dangerous, short career in football, if you can maximize your earnings, do it. I'm just not sure Steveler gets an NFL look this off season. If he puts up okay CFL numbers, then I think he'd get a future look. But as of now, he'd have to be a complete position-less player, and I think there are way too many RB's, WR's, TE's ahead of him in the cue. No way he's being considered as an NFL QB. Tim Tebow was every bit as good of an athlete as Strevler, and a better QB, and he couldn't stick. But, maybe times have changed ...

  17. 4 minutes ago, JCon said:

I could see some NFL teams looking at Streveler to try to replicate what the Ravens have done. Lamar Jackson is not just an athletic running QB like Vick was, he's a power runner, who can cut and punish defenders. Streveler doesn't the athletic ability or arm of Jackson, though.

And Jackson has done well in a pretty small sample size. How's he going to be in a couple of years when the pounding he takes adds up? Same with Streveler, he needs to evolve.

You're right that teams will try to replicate what the Ravens have done. But, Lamar Jackson is really, really good, and always was. It was ridiculous and insulting that some NFL teams wanted him to change positions out Louisville. Lots of other reasons for that. But, smart football people knew he was a true talent.

If Streveler could become a CFL version of Jackson-lite we'd all be thrilled.

  18. 2 minutes ago, Geebrr said:

True, but his versatility is something BLM doesn't bring to the table.

Teams wouldn't be looking him to be a starting QB.

They would be looking at him to play ST, catch some passes, and sometimes pass.

He can do/is willing to do all those things.

He's an amazing athlete. And if he was willing to basically become a RB or slot receiver, then maybe he gets a look. But still, there are so many practice roster RB's and WR's, plus a bunch more coming every draft. I just can't see Streveler getting a look at an alternate position ahead of players who actually play those positions. NFL teams still view CFL talent lower on the pecking order than one of their own college draft picks for the most part.

And, he's no where near ready to be an NFL QB, even third string. He's not quite ready for be a CFL starter at QB. Pretty sure he re-signs with Winnipeg. If he ever put up decent QB numbers in the CFL, he may get a look down the road with the NFL.

Interesting. Justin Dunk is usually pretty connected in terms of information. But, this article is also really vague - "drawn the attention of NFL scouts". Who? Does he have workouts lined up?

I love our shirtless hero Streveler, as we all do. But, I'm still skeptical that he'll get much NFL interest. He just doesn't have the numbers as a QB to warrant an NFL look. Taysom Hill is basically not really playing QB in the NFL. Teddy Bridgewater is the back up there. And If Brees ever retires, pretty sure the Saints look elsewhere for a back up QB. I just don't think teams are going to try to replicate what the Saints have with Hill, and there are just too many new QB's to look at each year. I'm repeating myself but let's remember BLM got limited NFL interest as a potential back up QB.

And Banks? I’ve never seen a whinier excuse of a football player.  Seeing him complain about getting the ball too much and taking too many hits?  In the championship game?! Give me a f.ucking break.  Banks is 2 for 2 crying in GC’s and it looks good on him.  Smfh
