Revisit that if we lose west final 17-16 cause our kicker missed 3 field goals..after we struggled all season....first rounder looks pretty good...plus we have drafted guys who we been grooming now for several years..and need to be paid and technically I don't see a huge need for a first rounder this year ..we draft well as it is so I'd sacrifice this year for chance to repeat

Exactly! I wouldn't start my negotiations offering a first round pick, but if that's what it takes to get a quality kicker, sign me up. There is no team that can beat the Bombers when they are playing their best. But like Booch says, let's say because of the weather, luck, we need one field goal to win the west final. As it stands now, we lose. We blow probably the best chance I've seen for a Bomber team to win another Grey Cup because of a kicker.

Plus, it's pick 8 or 9 in the first round of the CFL draft. At best it's a starting guard a couple of seasons down the road. Versus winning a Grey Cup?!

Honestly, if Walters does nothing to address the kicker, it's a huge mistake with a team this good.

If anyone never read Paul Friesen’s Winnipeg Sun series on the Grey Cup run, his book “Against All Odds” on sale at the Bomber Store gives a really neat insider account of how it went down, and gives some great insight into just how tough it was for Streveler. And for those who aren’t fans of Friesen’s writing (it can be somewhat simplistic here too, remember that he has word counts with his articles, unlike my posts, lol!) I understand that some of the proceeds go to a good cause.

I've never seen a player like Streveler. On paper, statistically, if you didn't know the Bombers, didn't do much. But as a Bomber fan, his on field impact, what he brought to the team, how badly he wanted to win - absolutely legendary, and such a key part of the Grey Cup season. I've said it before, one of the best football players (not QB) I've ever seen. Every player, coach, fan would love to have him on their team.

Just promote them. Try something. Kids go free with paying adults. I don't like giving away tickets but we need some youth in TO to get interested.

I think we are past that point. The blue jays even when they've been bad were a decent draw. The raptors were a great draw during the bad eras. Its not strictly product related. The argos arent a terrible team this year. When they last won the cup they couldnt draw worth a damn either.

You're both right. They currently do nothing to promote the Argos, and could do a lot because they're MLSE. And, I think it's too late. The Argos are so far down the pecking order, I can't see promotion as a way to get fans to watch them at BMO. Too bad. It's a nice venue. I think the only option is some type of relocation in GTA, Southern Ontario, and then promote the sh&t out of the team in that area.

Initially crowds would be good but would fall off. I remember the WLAF's Montreal Machine. First game they drew 55000 to their opening home game. By season's end they were barely drawing 10000. All the NA teams eventually moved to Europe to become NFL Europa.

Yeah, I'm really doubtful that Toronto fans would get behind the XFL. NFL, they might. I was surprised when I lived there how popular the Bills were, and how many would travel down to Bills games. Plus, NFL is big time. Toronto supports big time sports. Toronto FC - MLS - just on the edge of big time, so they are now getting support.

Either way, how long can you keep a team at BMO Stadium drawing 6000 fans a game? And where does it stop? 1000 fans a game? I went to a McGill game a few weeks ago - 3500 fans.

I think the CFL has to consider a relocation. At least somewhere else in the GTA.

I would think the best option would be to double in a Usports venue and upgrade the seating and stuff.

    QFT

I think if you get into one of the closer suburbs, you'd have a tremendous ability to draw from those stronger outlier communities. The difference in driving to brampton vs driving to the stadium in toronto is huge. (worst city to drive in with in country wide imo)

The online streaming is a good point too. I could see selling domestic rights to a SN type, and really going forward trying to focus on getting a strong streaming partner. I mean thats how I watch I stream on TSN. I know a LOT of expats who are constantly trying to figure out ways to watch from their new homes. + you could tap into a bit of the global market. Im sure a bunch of germans would love to watch hansen play .

Exactly! I stream every sport I watch now - Jets, Bombers, Vikings, USports football. Some are from providers like TSN, but, I don't have cable. So I'd buy the streaming package from anywhere.

And your Hansen "bunch of Germans" comment - so true, and made me laugh out loud. Well done! You might be Randy Ambrosie though.

Ive wondered about moving the argos to some fringe area of the GTA where they could garner more of a small market interest. Id still call em the argos and toronto too.

If the CFL dropped toronto, I could see tsn reeling a bit from the bragging rights of average market size etc. But to be honest, the CFLs draw is 3/4 from the west. If the CFL went from TSN to Sportsnet it could actually be an improvement. A big portion of whats broken with marketing to a younger audience is on the TSN side. Old ass reporters who talk over the game, cameras not showing whats actually going on, piss poor quality panels and booth combinations, and every year a bunch of hokey pop country crap forced down our throats. I know sportsnet and the score are toronto based too, but what do those channels actually have exclusive rights to any more?

Yeah, GTA suburb might work - Brampton, Mississauga, Oshawa. I was thinking further out - Guelph, Kitchener, London - where youth, high school, Usport football is popular.

TSN thing - You're right, at this point maybe they don't really care if there's a team in Toronto or not given where their viewers come from. Plus, we're in a new era. Might be other options if the CFL broadcast rights went to market now. Streaming services like DAZN or others; maybe Sportsnet; maybe some combination of local and national broadcast partners? Seems like the big sports - NFL, NBA - are not worried at all when broadcast rights are up, not just because they're so popular, but because they know there's so many options now sniffing around - Apple TV; Facebook; Amazon ... - have all talked about acquiring the broadcast rights to a major sport.

Sometimes It feels like the Toronto attitude is “if the CFL doesn’t work in Toronto, then it won’t work anywhere, so we need to blow up the model and become NFL North”, which by all perceptions is what they really pine for. Maybe instead of doubting the product, look to places like Winnipeg and Saskatchewan and Montreal in its revival days and Calgary and Edmonton and figure out why it succeeds there and copy that, instead of assuming that if they can’t make it work, it’s everyone else who is the problem.

So looking for opinions on this. Why does the CFL work so well in some markets and so badly in others? Do the largest cities just have too many other options for there to be interest, while the smaller cities where it’s the only game in town make it more attractive? Should the league just re-locate to smaller centres? Could those smaller places afford stadiums? Does the league need to slash budgets to one third of what they are, and is that feasible?

Great points. Maybe Toronto should relocate. Problem is does TSN still care about the CFL as much with no team in Toronto? They should, their primary viewership are not from the GTA. But, I'd be worried they'd pull the plug, and I don't know who would step in. Perhaps if they relocated to somewhere else in Southern Ontario - London, Kitchener, Guelph, Windsor ...? Not saying they'd get Bombers or Riders numbers, but could you get 15,000 out per game at a reasonable ticket price? Probably. And still have TSN interested - Hamilton vs _______ rivalry?

No easy solutions. I lived in Toronto for years, and no one I knew talked about the Argos. Including football fans. The Bills were more popular.

How’s Reilly arm looking? The only game I’ve  caught from him this season was against Saskatchewan in the opener and he could not throw the ball with his injury. I’m wondering how much it’s improved. With our pressure and forcing him to get rid of it quick could make it a very long day for Reilly

I was at the Alouettes/Lions game in Montreal a couple of weeks ago. He looked like the Reilly of old. Great throws, moved around in the pocket. Carved up the Als. Bombers D is much better, but it won't be easy. Best two QB's in the CFL right now going head-to-head.

    Do you mean this?

Looks like this guy starts it

Nope. Didn't see that one. Just saw one from Rush saying what I put before. Maybe it was in response to this. Who knows. Showed up in my feed, though I don't follow him.

Anyways, didn't know Rush was such a beloved Winnipeg sports alumni. And not going to debate or defend who is at protests.

My point - still sticking to it - pro athletes, and retired pro athletes, should never threaten to beat up civilians. Period. Even provoked. Especially if you're planning a post retirement media career. You don't think pro athletes get provoked all the time!? Try playing any kind of pro sport in Philadelphia as a visiting team.

He also got vaxxed in a wedding dress and raised money/awareness of transgender rights and issues.

Makes me very proud that he's a Bomber alum.

That is impressive, truly. Former pro athlete threatening to beat up people - not at all impressive. Look, you might be him, or friends with him. Don't know. And I'm fully vaxxed, not attending any rallies, so I'm not defending that camp. As an adult, life long Bombers fan, never want to see an alumni of any pro sport threatening to beat up citizens. Bad move. And he did on Twitter.

He said he would escort anyone to their appointments.

Also something about "how would they feel getting beat up by a guy looking like this" and a photo of him with a man-bun. It's there somewhere in the Twitter verse. If he's planning to have some kind of media career, not a great position to take. Wasn't impressed as a Bombers fan from an alumni.

John Rush does a weekly thing here on the local radio station in Steinbach he has some interesting takes on the Riders amoungst other things.

He also somehow showed up on my Twitter feed threatening to go to anti-vax rallies and beat people up. I don't even follow him on Twitter. Real tough guy.

we got 10 guys backing up 7 dl/lber spots. And we got 3 guys backing up 11 wr/db spots. Yep that seems about the usual.

Yeah, it's interesting to me that most teams load up on DL and LB's dressing for games. I get it - keep the pass rush fresh; LB's play on special teams. But, the coach in me would dress one more OL, DB and WR in place of three other spots. QB is your most important position. Having just one back up OL terrifies me. You lose 2, you're f'ed. Putting Jake Thomas in there is death for Collaros. Having one extra WR is one additional weapon in a diverse offense. And only one back up DB? Opposing OC's are dreaming about two DB's going down and a team having to drop a LB back to safety.

I think people overestimate how many Rider fans actually travel for this game. Lots, yes, but not as many that fill the stands.

Media likes to say that Rider fans travel well but it's actually many Rider fans leave Saskatchewan and live elsewhere.

Point being, there will still be lots of Rider green (and Rider tears) on Saturday.

One of the reasons I love going to the Banjo Bowl - seeing and interacting with Riders fans. In my experience, it's always been good natured and fun interactions. And, I do hope they will all need to drown their sorrows with Rum Hut beverages because the Bombers make it two wins in a row.

Obviously Nichols has now hit the end of the road.

Seems like it. I feel for him because seems like the surgery to his throwing arm did not solve the problem. And pre-surgery he had an average arm, average accuracy, so any deterioration really shows. Gotta say thanks to Matty N for his years as a Bomber. But, management made the right choice with Collaros. Looks like an MOP candidate so far.

I think with Grant its either a high ankle sprain or broken ankle the way he limped off the field.

If either is the case he won't be back soon. We need a better option than Nelson. As someone pointed out, we're bad in all areas of special teams this year. Better kickers might be tough to find, but a returner? There's probably a better one on the roster.

Duke Williams or Lirim Hajrullahu if you could only choose one?

Duke. Assuming he hasn't regressed in the NFL, or is hurt, he'd be our best WR by a long shot. He was an elite CFL WR. Something the Bombers haven't had since ... ?

But, if our kicking doesn't improve soon, it's going to cost us a win or two. So, can we say both?
