Question is, does Gray want to establish a storied football career he can be proud of or does he want to toil in obscurity chasing a rabbit he might never catch and retire anonymously like Bilikudi and Mulamba did?

That’s a great question. Better chance of accolades in the CFL (all star, awards) than if you’re a fringe NFL’er. But, maybe it’s a money question too. An agent may crunch the numbers and if you can make the 53 man roster in the NFL for say 4 years, at the minimum salary, you probably net more $ than an 8 year CFL starter. That said, I really think he should come back soon. Don’t think he’s NFL material, but would be great here

Some of this reminds me of when we kept giving Grigsby carries and had two upgrades over him in Cotton and Volny.  Mike O'Shea's long history of playing favorites.

Lol! Thanks for the reminder of those guys. Just threw up in my mouth a bit.

I would love to know that it is injury- then we would have reason to expect that he will get better.

All teams are secretive about injuries, but the Bombers are the KGB. We’ll never know. Plus I think Nichols is smart enough to know if he was out for an extended time he may be out for good because of our collective man-crush, Strevelation!!!

Moe had one bad game out of our 10...he's hardly a concern whatsoever, and hasn't lost a step..was a total defensive scheme collapse all around...If anything the use and play of Loffler is hurting this team more than anything...he seems so slow...and stiff....big hits be dammned (way things are going league wise anyway a big hit will probably get flagged)

I think he needs to be replaced for a game or two and put in the more athletic Conteh or Morgan and let them play a traditional safety role, because as it is now, he is offer minimum help to the DB's coverage wise and in open space with a receiver running after the catch he almost looks comical and lost out there...not to mention looking like he is plodding through deep wet sand

Good for Moe for owning his poor play. That’s veteran leadership. And I agree, in the grand scheme of Bomber woes, he’s not the problem. Better than Nichols passive aggressive shots at his receivers. Have to agree with Stegall on that one – they’re not complaining publicly about the one-hoppers and overthrows that they’re getting from Nichols.

Loffler has been an enigma. What happened to him? Wonky knees finally giving out? Because as a safety you need to either cover, hit or be a ball hawk – he’s doing none. He’s Cauchy Muamba level now.  Somebody hop in a time machine and get me Paul Bennett.

How about something along the lines of "It's a team game INCLUDING THE COACHES and we weren't good enough". You don't hang your players while accepting none of the blame yourself. Make him look like a phoney prick now after all those times he said he takes the blame himself.

O’Shea rarely calls out players. And I have heard him refer to coaches having to be better. Two games like we just had warrant something more than “it’s a team game ...” Hall should be gone next season, but, so will a bunch of players if this keeps up.

O'Shea throws the team under the bus. Says the team didn't make enough plays and didn't battle. Says he is disappointed with their effort. Wow!

Surprising coming from him. But what is he supposed to say - “good effort fellas, have an orange slice”. What do you want a coach to say to the fans after that **** show?

What can you do if your O cant stay on the field though. Our D is not super humans that they dont get tired.

Agree the offense has to do more but come on. 500 yards last week and this week! They’re soft in coverage, Bighill has been replaced by a mellower clone of himself, and the D-line gets virtually no pressure. Let’s be real - we’re not good on either side of the ball. Consequences ....

I do not see anyone calling for Nichols to be permanently benched in favour of Streveler, but rather that we want to see that if the game is not going well for Nichols, Streveler will be put in to give the team and fans hope. As a fan, it is very frustrating to see Nichols coming out again and again when clearly he is struggling. Streveler ought to have had a lot more reps and time to adapt to the CFL, so ought to be more effective now. Nichols does not seem to be getting better, and Saturday will tell us a lot.

I'd like to see that too. But, I don't think it will happen. Football coaches in general are very reluctant to pull their starting QB when they're struggling. They aren't like hockey coaches pulling their goalie who's struggling, even if they are the established starter (like Peter Laviolette yanking Rinne whenever he sucked). I'd like to see that approach, but, I also get why you wouldn't do it as a HC in football. Unless you're really unclear on who your starter is, like in Toronto where Franklin never really was the set-in-stone starter. That said, Streveler has the bigger upside than Nichols. I think the coaches and management see that too. Just a matter of how and when you start considering that. I think a 9 - 9 season, and a first round knockout, might create a "competition" for QB next camp.

And what if Streveler doesn't take that next step? Then what? Let's not make a change until streveler has shown he is clearly better, which ha hasn't yet.

Fair point. But how does he take the next step on the bench? I like Nichols, but he is who he is. And at some point soon management has to decide whether it’s worth paying $400K plus per year for the sixth best starting QB in the league, or roll the dice on $200K or so for Streveler, who might end up being better.

Depending how the season plays out, Nichols will be in a battle in training camp. A tough decision will be coming

Definitely. And let’s remember that this regime has been there before. Not too long ago Winnipeg was “Willypeg”. They’re loyal, but not stupid (maybe about WR’s ...) I trust they see what we do - Nichols is good, not elite; and Streveler could be something special. My only fear is Streveler gets an NFL look in the next year or two.

You toss him into a game or two...and make him work hinself off the roster and cut bait...or he makes it impossible to remove him...thats how....Lankford should have been the last resort in this equation...and even then I would probably split reps with Simonese and Peterman in that spot and dressed Flanders in the import roster spot as a non DI or dressed another import for free use on defense

I like your idea of Simonise and Petermann in rather than Lankford. NI versus import aside, they're just better options at this point. And definitely Flanders in place of Lankford I fully endorse.

Torn acl players have returned and done well afterwards, although the odds are against them.  Collaros, Lulay.  Kory Sheets played pretty well for Riders.

Definitely. And I hope for his sake he does come back. I'm not defending the current management's ability to find receivers. So far they suck at it. But, let's not imply that somehow the Bombers missed out on signing an AJ Green in his prime level talent just because they chose not to bring in Kenny Shaw. I'm sure they looked into it.

sometimes though practice is not a true indicator of what a guy will do in a game...happens all the time.

Also...I wouldn't hold my breath on Walters making it work on a Zylstra as he didn't on Rogers..or Walker...and doesn't have the guts to sign a guy like that..and cut a Dressler

Agree. But, how else do you evaluate a player with limited or no CFL experience? College game film? Manziel has some great college game film. You have to go by how well they perform in practice against your DB's, how well they know the playbook, connection with QB's. And, how they're buying into your system and their role in it. That matters. I know people loved good old TJ Thorpe, but at the end of the day if he was that talented, and had a positive attitude, he'd  be playing somewhere.

Lol....yup...as much as Jones has shown he sucks as a g.m he does one thing right..constantly brings in guys to try and upgrade what he has..tho some of the guys he kicks tires on are head scratchers.

But..they lose a receiver..they bring one in..but we stay pat and recycle a 3rd yr guy with no upside..and really...somewhat useless for the role he is filling in our offence

Many of the guys Jones brings in are major head scratchers. And I'd reserve judgement on the wisdom of signing a post ACL tear Kenny Shaw.

  13. In all pro sports today it’s a really fine line between authoritarian a-hole coach and players coach. You really can’t succeed being too far one way or the other. I think the best balance is an organization where the players feel that the coach has their back (doesn’t call them out publically), but management makes decisions based on constantly upgrading talent, salary cap, admits mistakes, and is ruthless about it. I think we’re getting closer to that (like trading Bowman for a box of tape; waiving super bust Faith).

Our import WR’s is and has been our weakest position talent wise for a long time. I don’t like Lankford, but, don’t you think if they had a clearly better option they’d be in there? I think if Corey Washington were absolutely crushing it in practice he’d be in there. As O'Shea always says, if he gave them the best chance to win ... And if Zylstra gets cut and the money would work, Walters would replace someone on the roster for him in a heartbeat.

  14. Legitimate points and concerns. But, we’re still averaging 32 points a game with mediocre QB play. And 5 - 4 is not terrible considering we had a raw rookie start the season for us at QB. I think we are who we thought we would be - average, playoff team, but not a cup contender. Question is, will that be good enough to save some jobs next season?

I could not agree more that Nichols should absolutely keep his yap shut about the booing for the reasons others have already cited. I also agree that the fans were booing, at least in part, MOS' decision to re-insert Nichols (more than Nichols himself, per se). But let's not kid ourselves here. The fans were also booing because Streveler had provided just a little spark in a game in which - outside of his two successful deep shots - Matty had struggled mightily. Us fans were genuinely excited to see Streveler bringing a little something different.

A then coach kills that spark...

Plus it just defies about a 100 cumulative years of football coaching acumen to put your starter back in the game after he has just been dinged up when you are down 24 points.

I mean, holy %$#^, talk about stupid.

And stubborn. And ridiculous on so many fronts. If Matt's sore at anyone, he should be sore at his coach for putting Matt and Bomber fans alike in a terrible position. I mean, of course he freakin' wants to go back in the game and finish up with his troops (which is what he said on the post game show) but it's the head coach's &^%ing job to take that decision away from his player because the coach is supposed to see a bigger picture. Nichols went on to say he'd also want to finish up the game if we were up by 24 as well. Well, d'uh he would! But that wouldn't make that the right call in that situation either.

To sum up: the game is over, Nichols is dinged, Streveler is moving the ball, the fans are feeling a spark....WTF? I mean, just unbelievable decision-making from our head coach.

Exactly. Bad decision by the coach on so many levels putting him back in.
