Bombers Under Investigation for 50-50 Fiasco

Recommended Posts

The Liquor and Gaming Authority of Manitoba has launched an investigation of the #Bombers regarding the 50-50 at Grey Cup. #BreakingNews

**** the winning number was announced at the game but the wrong number was displayed on their website. The winner actually threw his ticket away before retrieving it from the trash as a keepsake. He then looked again when the Bonbers announced there had been no claim yet.

They are awfully lucky it worked out. Imagine Id his poor guy has torn up his ticket. Apparently he even called the Bombers to confirm and they told him the website was correct.

And what would have happened if the website number was actually a sold ticket and someone tried to claim it?

Ethically, yes.  But if he didn't claim it and the mishap didn't get noticed it probably would have worked out better in the long-run.

"An error was made because the Winnipeg Football Club did not inform the public that the incorrect number was posted overnight on the website," Blue Bombers spokeswoman Kim Babij-Gesel said in an emailed statement. "Our processes will be reviewed with training for staff to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Hope this isn't another case of the Bombers organization cheaping out and paying their website lackie minimum wage or something.

They'd be better off posting a picture of the winning number rather than typing it out.  I'm meaning on the screens in the stadium and on the website.

PS On a side note, why wouldn't the guy have gone to check the ticket after seeing the right number on the screen at the game?

It's obviously an honest mistake and the fact that so many people are losing their minds is absurd. Let's all move on now.

Im not sure who is losing their minds.  But it certainly warrants an investigation by the lottery people.  It doesnt have to be a witch hunt but its their job to protect the integrity of lotteries.  They would be derelict in their duties if they did not look into this.

I imagine its as simple as someone typing the wrong number into the website and that mistake being repeated because they were using the website as their source.  The easy fix is to post a photo of the winning ticket rather than have someone copy it down.  Easy peasy.

But if the winner had thrown his ticket out and then they corrected their mistake...what then?  He probably sues them.  If someone came forward with the ticket that matches the incorrect number and claimed the prize and then the real winner came forward...what them?  Basically as far as mistakes go, the Bombers lucked out here.

It's worthy of being looked into.

I don’t think it’s that obvious Noeller.

1. This kind of thing should never ever happen. Ever.

2. The Bombers have been part of a 50/50 scandal in the past. I think someone went to jail for it.

3. Earlier this year there was another 50/50 draw that was not claimed. The winnings went to the next games 50/50 and because of the pot being so much bigger, 50/50 sales were way up. In light of recent events, that 50/50 draw has to be in question now too.

Edit: As Voodochylde and Bigblue204 have pointed out, this 50/50 draw was carried over because the winner was determined to be ineligible. That makes this point somewhat irrelevant.

4. After Mr.Ritchot checks the web site and phones in to verify and is told his is not the correct number, the Bombers realize their mistake and change it on the web site, but they fail to inform anyone of their mistake. They knew someone phoned in with the correct numbers and still failed to inform anyone when they realized their mistake? Making the mistake in the first place is incompetent, but not informing anyone that a mistake was made is corrupt.

5. The Bombers front office has a well earned image problem.  This kind thing exacerbates that negative image.

In my opinion this is a very serious incident and it needs to be dealt with in a serious manner. The Bombers have been so bad for so long when it comes to their front office that I can no longer make excuses for them or give them the benefit of the doubt.

Great post Dascow.  Thats very true about them not immediately informing the public of their error.  Its entirely possible that the winner, who had checked his ticket against the website and with the Bombers directly, would have assumed he was not the winner and never checked the website again..and thus would never have seen the number change.

Seems pretty clear the Bombers caught their mistake but hoped no one would notice.  And is it true the only reason we know this happened is because local media asked the winner what took him so long?  The Bombers only commented after the fact and after lotteries announced they were looking into it.  Perhaps they should have thrown in some lifetime season tickets to keep Mr Richot quiet...

Thats also a great point about the former unclaimed prize.  Imagine if it came out the same mistake was made...
