2019-20 CFL Offseason

For some teams, the CFL Offseason is here. Rather than lose all the coaching movement discussions to the Regular season thread, I thought we could start putting it here.

Those teams currently lost in the wilderness:

Ottawa

Toronto

BC

Montreal

Calgary

Edmonton

Saskatchewan

Hamilton

The champs are here.. the champs are here... Winnipeg*

is it racist to call racists racist? Minorities can be racist too. Fact is that Shivers had an agenda. There's a reason that Danny Barrett was the coach he hired. Guy flat out said he was hiring the best black coach out there.

Truth was, that is what he did & admitted so.

I guess I should get banned for what I said or would you prefer I resign?

Floyd has no clue. That was probably before his time or he'd have known that.

Good to see you in mid season form already. Are you going to get all upset when he claps back at you too?

There goes Mike on another asshat drive by that he's so famous for here. A mod who has always been on a huge power trip who just loves to flex his muscles to people he doesn't like when he has nothing to contribute. Who rarely if ever contributes to this site anymore. Well done, Mikey.

I think your phone is too Canadian. It only recognize Tims and not Toms. 😁

Yay for small sample sizes!

Yes Collaros and Nichols do things differently, and maybe Collaros is the overall better quarterback... but the numbers offensively still played out the same for every quarterback we used. Not super impressive passing stats, a crap load of rushing yards. The way this team was set up was the same for every qb. Don't make mistakes and capitalize on the chances you get. That's what Nichols was doing this year. It is quite frankly unfair to put the midseason crap on Nichols. There was a fundamental change in the way this team played after those games they gave away with the passive ****. Defensively they tightened up a hell of a lot and offensively they stayed more aggressive too.

Let's consider that Bailey and Lawler really came on as the season progressed and I don't think Nichols ever got the chance to have Bailey in the lineup. That makes a difference too.

To try and downplay Matt Nichols is just  silly give all the factors surrounding this team.

In a previous post I made a large post which showed his regression and how after his first injury with us he hasn't played well at all.    Same O Coordinator and for the most part same players.  Pre first injury Nichols had a tonne of 300 yard games .... post injury he's had only a few 250 yard games and a whole lot more with less.  Same coach same players....

We had Lawler and Bailey in the line up earlier/midway in the season... they were only visible once Streveler and Collaros started playing.   It's because those qbs were not scared to throw the ball more then 5 yards down field.

The numbers were similar but the opposition that Nichols faced was vastly inferior to the others.

It's sad that Collaros in only 4 games has way more highlight reel plays then Nichols did in 8 games.....   it's because Nichols literally did nothing aside from dump it off to a fresh Harris who was facing crap teams.

Regardless of the stats or opinions... look at how shitty his throws were when he did play... how many times did the receiver have to dive or go off balance to make the catch despite being wide open.   The balls were rarely on target.

I mean, the guy had an over 71% completion percentage. Some people just make stupid things up.

What Collaros did in those 4 games was pure magic. But they were extraordinary circumstances, where you can almost pin it down to divine intervention as to how everything worked out with the storylines, luck and the bought-in motivated performance of every single player on the team. To think he would play that way all of next season is a bit wishful, IMO. He would have bad games, and is susceptible to injury.

Say what you want about Nichols, but he’s given us 4 straight winning seasons since he has arrived. And he did win a difficult semi-final in Regina last year. He deserves a go at it on his terms, to try and win the whole damn thing with himself at the helm. With Buck as (potentially) our OC, and a bit of a chip on his shoulder watching another QB win the cup on his team, Nichols could be a whole different monster next year. I would not write him off just yet.

So much this. The fact that in the 3 playoff games Collaros didn't throw a single pick is nothing short of luck, each of those games there was definitely some passes that should've been snagged by the D, but weren't. Even in the Grey Cup game, Adeleke had a glorious opportunity and did undercut the ball - he just didn't catch it. If he just picks that off, could've been a completely different game (at the time, it was 8-6 Winnipeg, they ended up hitting a field goal on the drive).

As for Nichols - my heart says give him another chance, but a bum knee and now a massive shoulder injury... might be time to hang'em up.

There would be no Nichols/Collaros debate or compassion if Collaros had the opportunity to beat up on low hanging fruit like Toronto and Ottawa.

We played Calgary four times this year and our O had its worst game (by far) when Nichols started.

If management gives Nichols the job next year I will cheer for the team the same as before.

There was a great chart posted in another thread showing how far from the LOS most of Nichols’ completions were and while I don’t want to overstate the exact number, something like 70% of his completions were within 5 yards of the LOS. The visual was staggering. Not all numbers are created equal.

How does 7-2 work into the equation?

As an extremely poor measure of a QB’s effectiveness and I would hope you know that. Do you consider the Bombers’ 3-0 record in the playoffs in non-Nichols’ starts compared to 1-3 with him to be significant? It goes both ways.

**** that.

You make plays or you don't.

F***ing rights.

Would things be different if Vaj's throw didn't hit the upright? You betcha.

Them's the breaks and that's the way it goes. The best team won the championship. Period.

This is the chart I was referring to and illustrates everything that those skeptical of Nichols’ “greatness” talk about.

So, QB efficiency can't be used. Wins can't be used. What obscure measure shall we use?
