Bombers release Chris Matthews

kind of surprising, but not really..... news just broke on TSN radio VIA Jeff Hamilton.

He hasn't really seemed engaged this year.  Maybe being under-utilized.  But if he was becoming a problem in the room, whining about not getting the ball, I'm fine with this move!

Get someone in there who actually wants to play!  I'm sure the salary saving isn't going to hurt us either!

I have to say I respect that aspect of O'Shea and Walters. Healthy scratches a guy who gets stabbed and/or stabs. Doesn't throw him under the bus to the media. "Supports" him. But, he and Walters pull

On my drive in to the hospital this morning I listened to Bob Irving say he had heard rumblings about Mathews over the last 2-3 weeks...... it made me laugh at that tweet that somebody posted where Irving adamantly stated he works for CJOB and not for the Bombers.  I thought if you work for CJOB then why didn't you report the rumblings about Mathews ?  Lol.

I highly doubt that this cut was mainly because of his production.   I said it before it wouldn't' surprise me if he was cut after the *incident* and of course a lot of people thought that was impossible.   My guess is that they gave him a 2nd chance ,   his attitude or off field problems over shadowed his limited production on offense.

I'm guessing this was a move to keep the locker room cancer free.

What I hope is that they either sign an NFL cut ,  or they restructure Jeffersons deal  and extend him using the money saved on Matthews!

How do you excuse Lawler though - if this is about production, he really only had one good game against Ottawa

Lawler isnt making 250 k

No way would I have continued rostering Lawler over Matthews. Lawler has been invisible for weeks.

Lawler has made about 2 impact plays all year

I would expect a significant part of Matthews 250k was paid as a signing bonus... plus we're not in SMS trouble with all the injuries...

Maybe there's someone else coming - but probably behind the scenes issues, I'd say

I wouldn't be surprised if he signs with Calgary again...and lights it up against us again.

His one impact play against us.

Yeah, ok

Hes not making big money tho.

Matthews = big money and made 1 or 2 plays and lots of drops.

Sounds like it wasn't. Jeff Hamilton seems to think its because as a Vet hes due his full salary after the 1st. Pretty apparent its lack of production for 2 much money.

If ppl are looking at production vs salary... Im surprised He lasted this long.

In a way, it sort of sucks to lose Matthews right now amid all the drama and injuries, but at the same, if management was feeling that they couldn't justify the dollars they were paying him, it's nice to see that they'll do what they believe needs to be done.

All that matters to me is Tburg supports this move. :D

Peace @Tburg. :)

Bet he was closer to 250 k than we all think.

he wasn't.

That's absurd money. He wasn't even at 200k.

Like when he said there was nothing wrong with Khari's arm when he could not throw a pass to a receiver 10 yards away.

Technically it was his shoulder....

Well, as others have said, the way our offense is structured NO offensive player is going to be a big production player in this offense (except Andrew Harris). Rightly or wrongly, it is what it is.

Except Darvin Adams is a big production player on this offence...

Adams is needed on this team. But even before his injury he wasn't in the top 10 in receiving in the league.

EXACTLY...I think he woulda topped out at 180k

makes plays though...christ he is tied for 5th still in receiving TD's...Think tied for second last yr..

Regardless, production vs Salary vs off field distractions vs Vets guaranteed salary = he gone.

I think part of his release is off field distractions.. I think part of it is money vs production.. I wouldn't be surprised if there were personality clashes.. Matthews just seemed disinterested to me. Was he doing all the little things? Who knows.

He catches everything that is thrown to him - he's been our only 1000 yard receiver for two years now

If we leave out the Edmonton game where he got nicked...

He's 260+ yards in 5 games...  on pace for 900+ without injuries
