2019 CFL Season: Around the League

Pre season action 1PM PT

BC at Edmonton

3 Areas To Watch

Number 2 Pivot: Who Steps Up?

BC - Ricky Lloyd and first-year Leos Austin Apodaca and Cole Sears will handle the quarterback reps in hopes of getting a leg up on sticking behind Reilly on the depth chart.

Edmonton- Danny O’Brian, Logan Kilgore, Briscoe.

- One big observation in the first week of camp is the depth at receiver. Standouts at the position have included Joey Augustin, Marquis Bundy and Mexican additions Fernando Richarte and Gerardo Alvarez. All CFL clubs are required to keep one global player on their roster beyond training camp.

- Defensive Line: Calling On Another Bookend

With Odell Willis having another strong showing in camp, the big question remains who will line up as the other bookend.

- Linebacker Adam Konar gets to battle some of his own teammates after he was cut loose and quickly picked up by the Lions on day one of camp. He’ll start at MLB

Interesting. Calgary has 4 QB's on the list, including Jake Browning who will likely be cut by the Vikings. ABLFQB's - always be looking for quarterbacks! Montreal has no QB's on their list.

I don't know (or really care much) about NCAA......anybody know if any of these guys are any good?

Mekale McKay has been there a long time. I believe Baumming said this is his 3rd time being reveled.

Just a reminder that this isn't the complete list, just a ten player sample.

I know a few names only. The interesting thing to me is teams placing players on there who actually might come to the CFL versus ones who never will. I think some team had Kyler Murray on their list last year. Not sure why. First overall pick in the NFL draft will never set foot in Canada. Smart teams put players on who actually may end up here. Like Jake Browning. Highly sought after UDFA in the NFL, but may not stick on a roster.

Can someone explain how the neg list works? Do you just tell the CFL you want this guy on your list before anyone else?

Naylor did a story on it last year.

Yes, you just put the guy on before he's signed or on someone else's list. This is one of those bizarro things that's uniquely CFL.

4 WR and 3 QBs... I like it.

Apparently Joe Flacco's brother and Evender Holyfield's son are both on CFL neg lists....

You never know... 3rd overall Trent Richardson ended up in Canada eventually. He wasn't any good but still, he showed up!

I think you want a balance of guys who might show up soon along with some "home run" shots.

That's fair. Balancing makes sense. Maybe target a few highly touted dudes who like the marijuana a bit too much for the NFL 😄

Never say never.

66 Chevelle will be happy that Kelly Bryant a MIzzou qb is on our list.

Yeah we sure have done rather well in the past couple of years:

From this year's list, Barriere is the guy who most interests me. Eastern Washington is a breeding ground for CFL quarterbacks:

Quote

Erik Meyer, the first in Eastern Washington?s string of All-American quarterbacks since 2005, nearly swallowed his whistle the first time he saw Eric Barriere operate.
...
?I wasn?t expecting Barriere to play the way he is this early,? Meyer said. ?He has a little bit of Vernon Adams? game, but with his own thing going on.?

Adams, another Los Angeles product, lauded Barriere.

?He?ll be better than me,? Adams said on Twitter. ?He?s definitely already faster.?
...
Matt Nichols, a veteran CFL quarterback, was EWU?s quarterback the next four seasons (2006-09), setting a Big Sky Conference career passing record (12,616 yards).

He was an All-American and the Big Sky Conference?s Offensive MVP.

Replacing Nichols was SMU transfer Bo Levi Mitchell (2010-11), who led EWU a to a FCS national championship his first year in Cheney before winning the Walter Payton Award in 2011.

Mitchell, a two-time CFL MVP who has led the Calgary Stampeders to two Grey Cup titles, has the attention of NFL teams. He recently worked out for a few, including the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts.

A year after Mitchell exhausted college eligibility, the electric dual-threat Adams starred at EWU the next three seasons, becoming an All-American and Walter Payton Award finalist. He transferred to Oregon his senior year, where he helped the Ducks reach the Alamo Bowl.

I wouldn't give the Bombers credit for Grant since he was on Hamilton's neg list not ours.  They do get credit for snagging him when the Ticats cut him in camp though.

Fans and media: "So just who's on these neg lists anyway".

CFL: "It's a secret.

Fans and media: "Why"

CFL :"Because, anyway here's  a list"

Fans and media: "Why not do that all the time, hey, that last trade you made included a neg list player, who was it?"

CFL: "Cant tell you, it's a secret"

don't even get me started on the CFL's negotiation list...   talk about a rant...

McKay went 19th overall in this year's NFL Draft... he's fast!

Bryant is a 5th year, senior transfer from Clemson playing for Missouri this year (GO TIGERS!)... he was displaced on Clemson's starting roster last year after game 4 by Lawrence, but he's good...

Bently could be interesting though and possibly a CFL candidate down the road... he's decent and has played well at South Carolina, ranked just outside of the top 30 in the NCAA for all D1 QBs, 7th in the SEC...

They have none on the list they provided. It's bigger then just 10 players.

true, the list of 10 by each team was a concession by the league to appease the fans that was inquiring why it existed,  why it wasn't available to fans, and who was on it... needless to say, the list each team provides each year for public consumption probably contains little information of substance... most of the names being released are probably those on their list that have the lowest probability of  actually playing in the CFL...

not that I'm a conspiracy theorist normally, this situation does beg the question, if you have nothing to hide why are you hiding it? teams share their personal list every day with the league who then makes everyone's list available to every team... the list can contain 45 players and can be changed as frequently as a team would like with no limits imposed... so, they have no problem sharing this information among themselves, but seem to have an issue with sharing this information with fans and the public at large...
