Looking Ahead: Toronto Vs Winnipeg

Ok the loss to Calgary at home sucked, but shouldn't be all that shocking. The way we played however was but games done, were still 1-1 and now we face the Argos, who I picked to be #1 in the east in the prognostication thread(s) in the offseason.

So what's it going to take to beat them?

We are going to need to shut down SJ Green first and foremost. I thought the last few games we've done a reasonably well job shutting down the opposing team's top threats;

example: Marquay McDaniel: 46 yards 0 TDs,  DaVaris Daniels: 39 yards 0 TDs

Duron Carter: 69 yard 0 TD, Naaman Roosevelt:  59 yards 1 TD

The problem we've been seeing is opposing teams 3rd or 4th options lighting us up like Nic Demski, Caleb Holley, Kamar Jorden. that needs to stop.

If we were to move Roc Carmichael to LB in the wake of potentially losing Wild for any amount of significant time,  who would fill that role at HB? I'm not totally opposed to the thought of bringing back Frederick at this point, it can't get any worse then playing roc back there,  can it?

I think for morale reasons the bombers need a bounce back game here.  Even if we lose it's not the end of the world. Our season last year was looking like sweet ass until about week 6 when we destroyed the ticats, so plenty of time. But we need to show last game was just a bad outing for the team, and not the norm.

  • CFL GAME NOTES ….The 2017 season has been remarkable in that each team has started their #1 QB in EVERY game. -To date only John White (EDM: 104 yards on June 24th) has a 100-yard game.

  • It roughly translates to 'I can't believe we haven't won a grey cup since 1990.'

  • He needs at least 15 to 20 touches per game! Let's get it going.

Richie Hall and Sam Hurl versus Mark Trestman and Ricky Ray.

DL needs a big big game... Toronto is a pass happy team, if Ray has time, he'll be 400+ yards.

2 games in a row Okp went down. He did come back and play against sask but he got up awful slow vs the stamps. I think he might miss this game

God help us if Ray gets time and Carmichael and Hurl are still starting.

Sort of excited to see Knox at WIL. Wish we were using anybody else at HB and Roc was benched.

Ottawa did the same thing we did...essentially gave the game away.

17 points, off a fumble, an interception and a quick kick that was poorly executed.  So, the Argos scored a FG and a great long pass play to SJ Green on their own. We can stop their Offence.

It's their defence we should be concerned with. Our Offence better be ready for their attack because they have some very good players who will give our O-Line fits.

If we play a full game, we'll get the W.

How often do we hear about our DE's? Oh yeah! We did hear about Westerman's too many roughing the passer penalties. Their QB's roll out into bald prairie, eat a few bites of their snack and throw a completed pass. More often than not they have rolled out the right side and there has not been anyone coming at them. Our containment has been just terrible. Four sacks!

....been that way even in the X season.   Really like what Nevis is doing and Johnson brings some push.....but the DE have been somewhat less than advertised....to be fair, two games in.

Knox and Jeffcoat is really exciting. Not so much about Carmichael.....

Should see no drop-off really with Jeffcoat, as Opo I don't think has got his CFL groove back.

Knox too I like in that spot..let's see if he will step up...Will miss Wild's leadership tho

Im really hoping Knox makes so many plays that when Wild is back they have to keep Knox in the line up and sit Hurl. Wasn't pleased with his play against CGY. Seemed to get mixed up on pass plays often.

I am going to make a bold prediction: Carmichael is so vulnerable and Ray is so deadly a passer that, if Carmichael starts and plays the game, we will lose. Hurl is still a liability but he can be compensated for a lot easier than an inept d-back.

Captain Obvious speaks: This afternoon, O'Shea said that Wild will be out "for a while". The hill got a bit steeper.

The scary part of losing Wild is losing his role in pass coverage.  He often plays a deep half as a safety (cover 2) and they do a lot of shifting of positions between Wild, Leggett and Loffler.  I don't believe Knox is quite as experienced with coverages, he's more a straight up LB.  Expect to see him blitzing a lot.

Here is some food for thought. Who will outcoach who MOS or Trestman. Let me make a prediction that I hope doesn't come true. While it is a given Trestman will outcoach MOS, I believe we have more talent. With that said watch Ray throw a couple of short passes aka LaPolice style but just long enough to bring in the DBs then dump it over their heads to a streaking receiver NOT aka La Police. I fear for this game but think we may squeak out a win if we keep the defense off the field for a reasonable amount of time. If we cannot move the ball we will lose then again I guess that is a forgone conclusion isn't it. Sorry

I worry about this too, especially against a pass happy team like the argos. I wonder if another db on the field instead of Knox would be a better option?

the answer is simple. We need more and higher class strip clubs in the city. It has paid off for the Als for many of years, and we have been missing the boat.

True, Toronto didn't just lose 28-15 last week.  Oh wait yes they did.  But they are consistent...?  All hail Trestman and Popp and their consistent 2-1 team.  Truly remarkable consistency.

I didn't take his example to mean that we(the Boatmen) are by any means a consistent team (yet).

I took it to mean that the coaching job of switching a godawful team (us, 2nd 2/3rds last season) to a competent one that can compete (us, so far) is simpler than taking a team that looks different every week and addressing the different issues that pop up.

Common element between first 1/3 of last season and first three games of this season is Ricky Ray.

With Johnson, Wild and Okpalaugo(Likely) out this week,  I have the feeling we're going to need to go toe to toe with the argos offensively to win this one.  something like that 43-40 game a few weeks back. I sure hope Lapo takes off the kids gloves and calls a infinitely better game on thursday than fridays

I expect Trestman is going to gameplan at our LBers ... rookie at one spot, slow foot at another and overloaded at the third .... might see a lot of counters and wide receiver sweeps and reverses on the running side while picking apart our zone defense as only Ray can .... we better hope we can get some consistent pressure on him ... so far our blitz has been more like a blintz, very flat with no bite

I disagree Carmichael is very exciting but not in a good way. More in an OMG exciting way.

"OMG he lined up offside!" kind of excitement.

I cringe when players get beat on passing plays, whether through assignment or poor tackling, but I absolutely abhor simple plays like lining up offside in obvious situations. This is just beyond ignorant, and it really cost us. It is the simplest thing to set 1 yard off the line and check others who are in the same situation.

KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHERS IN CHECK!   It's not that hard. This should have been drilled in to every player's heads early and often all TC and preseason.

I do not want to see another D-Line offside again this year or else, I'll really be mad ? Really, I will..
