Canadian Politics

I didn't think we had a thread for this.

Is Trudeau this out of touch or does he just not care?

"On Feb. 12, 2022 former prime minister Stephen Harper gave an address to the Universal Peace Federation World Summit 2022 taking place in Seoul, South Korea. The UPF is the political arm of the Unification Church, founded by Sun Myung Moon and now headed by his wife Hak Ja Han Moon.

For Harper, this was familiar turf. A regular at such events, two years earlier he had received a medal from the UPF.

in August Harper made another pilgrimage to a high-profile event sponsored by the Unification Church. This time the setting was the Universal Peace Federation Summit and Leadership Conference in Seoul. At such events, high-profile speakers reportedly are paid “very generously.”

Harper and other attendees were entertained by “Little Angels,” a charming girls’ choir in traditional Korean dress. Televangelist Paula White-Cain, Donald Trump’s touted spiritual advisor, gave a prayer for peace and thanked “Mother Moon.” (Hak Ja Han Moon presents herself as humanity’s “True Mother” who shares her husband’s dream of a global theocracy that will bring peace to all corners of the planet.) Harper, who was seated next to the U.S. delegates in the front row, joined the other participants in laying individual flowers in memory of the murdered Shinzo Abe."

This creep runs the Conservative ( in name only) party in  Canada.

Pierre Poilievre has earned a new admirer — conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Jones, who regularly promotes conspiracy theories and hateful rhetoric through his website InfoWars, took time during a recent broadcast to heap praise on Canada’s newly elected Conservative leader.

During an interview with John Birch Society Program Director Robert Owens, Jones identified Poilievre as one of the leaders of a “rising” global far-right movement that is challenging the “New World Order.”

According to Jones, those far-right leaders include Canada’s new Conservative leader as well as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Italian President Georgia Meloni.

“As negative as things are, we got Bolsonaro, we got Georgia Meloni in Italy, we got the new Canadian leader who’s set to beat Trudeau — who is totally anti-New World Order,” Jones said on his September 30 broadcast.

“You look all over the world, we are rising right now.”

The interview between Jones and the representative of the John Birch Society is titled “Understanding the evil genius behind the Great Reset,” which InfoWars describes as the “globalist master plan.”

Jones explains to viewers that the John Birch Society, a conspiratorial far-right  organization that was influential in US politics in the 1960s and boosted Barry Goldwater’s failed 1964 presidential bid, actually “predicted” the “Great Reset.”

Poilievre has repeatedly used rhetoric alluding to conspiratorial ideas popular among the online far-right related to the “World Economic Forum” and the “Great Reset.”

Poilievre’s office did not respond to requests for comment from PressProgress about Jones’ expressions of support or comparisons between Poilievre and far-right leaders like Bolsonaro and Meloni.

She's clearly just too dumb to bother reading up on Bill C-31.

Bill C-31, the Cost of Living Relief Act, No. 2 (Targeted Support for Households), would enact two important measures: the Canada Dental Benefit and a one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit.

  • The Canada Dental Benefit would be provided to children under 12 who do not have access to dental insurance, starting this year. Direct payments totalling up to $1,300 per child over the next two years (up to $650 per year) would be provided for dental care services. This is the first stage of the government’s plan to deliver dental coverage for families with adjusted net income under $90,000, and will allow children under 12 to receive the dental care they need while the government works to develop a comprehensive national dental care program.
  • The one-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit would deliver a $500 payment to 1.8 million renters who are struggling with the cost of housing. This more than doubles the government’s Budget 2022 commitment, reaching twice as many Canadians as initially promised. The federal benefit will be available to applicants with an adjusted net income below $35,000 for families, or below $20,000 for individuals, who pay at least 30 per cent of their adjusted net income on rent.

Disgusting that cons in this country are full on just using buzz words that mean nothing like woke rather than presenting legitimate criticisms of things and proposing a better way to do things.

I know it's been trending this way for a long long time but I am just so tired of this kind of politics. Why can't all these assholes getting paid well off our tax money actually work together for the betterment of everyone as a whole?

Winnipeg electing Glen Murray mayor would be a huge mistake, he is not accountable, not transparent and is living on name recognition. He would leave Winnipeg in a heartbeat again if a better opportunity comes along.

I'm not ready to say, Anyone but Murray, because there are some scary individuals on the ballot but there are a couple that are much better candidates.

I'm pretty far removed from it all (aside from what I can gather on Twitter) but a few people on my FB have been pushing for that Rick Shone (??) but last I saw in polling numbers, he's an after-thought...

Anyone but Murray at this point is Gilly or Loney.

Me too. Gilly seems like he has a bit of baggage. Around here Loney is trending.

Don't have a vote but Loney or Shone both seem like good options, Winnipeg needs to start looking forward and do things and stop with the lip service.

Using woke as an insult is a way to say education is bad. When it is used by Conservatives pejoratively, you can usually substitute smart/educated in the sentence without any change.

Pierre Poilievre’s official YouTube videos included a hidden tag appealing to misogynistic online movements that Canada’s intelligence agencies view as a danger.70c8fc80

A Global News analysis of 50 of Poilievre’s most recent YouTube videos showed that they included a tag — hidden from viewers, but not from the videos’ publisher — used by a misogynistic online movement. The tag helps promote Poilievre’s videos among those circles, and signals to YouTube what users might be interested in the Conservative leader’s messaging.

The tag, #mgtow, is an acronym for “Men Going Their Own Way” — a mostly-online movement comprised of anti-feminists who attempt to cut women completely out of their lives. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the movement overlaps with more aggressive forms of “male supremacy.”

It’s difficult to quantify the size of the movement, and its overlap with other forms of misogyny both online and in the real world. But online spaces connected to the “manosphere” have proliferated in recent years.

Global News verified the tag was used on the videos using publicly-available software and checked it against the video’s source code.

Within hours of Global News sending a detailed list of questions to Poilievre’s office, the tag disappeared.

Poilievre’s office said the Conservative leader was unaware the embedded tags existed “and therefore was unaware they were used for uploads on his YouTube channel over the last” four and a half years.

“The embedded tags were immediately removed once his office became aware of them. Obviously, Mr. Poilievre condemns misogyny and all forms of online hate,” wrote Sam Lilly, a spokesperson for Poilievre, in a statement to Global.

Poilievre’s office could not say who originally included the tag in the Conservative leaders’ videos in 2018, or why.

Before being scrubbed, the #mgtow tags were used in every one of 50 videos reviewed by Global News — including a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, Stephen Harper’s endorsement during the recent Conservative leadership contest, and videos featuring allies like Sen. Denise Batters and former leader Andrew Scheer.

Thats A Shame GIFs | Tenor

Really eerie and sad that Poilievre and his team are using the exact same playbook as the GOP-Trumpers. They throw out coded inflammatory or sympathetic messages, let the lunatic-racist-misogynistic  adherents bask in the glow of having their warped views validated and then back off half-heartedly once the bile has been spewed out, Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too?

Aside from misleading our block about our street renewal, I can't think of any of this baggage.  That being said, I can not vote for anyone Conservative-adjacent.

He's pretty moderate, but why vote moderate when I can vote progressive?  I think he'd make a decent provincial PC leader, but I still wouldn't vote for him.

That last sentence of yours is key.

This. He seems like a decent guy who unfortunately still believes that the answer to traffic congestion is roads, roads, and more roads. I see him as the 'more of the same old mediocrity' candidate.

Now that Loney seems to have enough momentum that I can switch my vote from Murray to him without much fear of Gillingham winning, that's what I'm going to do.
