I agree with Mr.P and others. Though, TBH - right now who we sign doesn't bother me as we are set in the QB position. Willy is god (well ok, that's a little too far I know but I'm so stoked about him, I've been waiting years (like most of you) for a bondafide #1 guy). Brohm and especially Marve seem like good solid backups (especially Marve). So, unlike last year when we had no one, why not take chances on these guys. You might find a real gem but if you don't, I'm confident this coaching / management staff won't think twice about releasing someone in a month rather than spin their wheels on them for a few years like they've been doing.
BTW - I haven't watched the videos - they mean nothing to me. I have to see a QB manage a game, see him at his average, before I judge him. Any QB can look like Payton Manning in a hi-light video.

Renaud was doing directional punting which affects his average. Coaches don't want the booming 60  yard punts anymore as the returners being so fast can outrun the coverage. So, a guy with a 38.9 yd avg is probably favored more than a guy with a 44.5 yd avg. Burke Dales could boom his punts but he was not a great directional punter. Punters like Rob Maver & Josh Bartel are very good directional punters. They are pretty proficient at dropping their punts into a spot on the field or punting out  of bounds. I think you have to look at the net avg yds on a punt & not total avg yds to get a good idea how Renaud is doing.

Oh I hear ya there (and btw - I've never taken any of your posts as crapping on the bombers - just the opposite actually. Me I started crapping on them in March when Mack released two QB's outright and brought in two more that were not better than them. I lost it then, then lost it some more when TO's 2nd, 3rd, and fodder came into our barn and smoked us 24 to 3. But I really lost all of it the following week when our so called leader announced we were going to Hamilton and were going to get our butts kicked. Only thing that shocked me, well, two things, 1st that one team (Montreal) managed to, not once, but twice, play worse than us to give us two wins, and 2nd, the only 'pleasant shock', was actually playing well and beating a team (Sask to boot) in the Banjo Bowl. I would have bet we'd of been the first CFL team ever to go 0 - 18, and I still say it was a miracle we didn't.

This year is like watching the bombers of old. I love this team again. Even if we lose I'll still love them, cause I wanna be entertained and I want to see effort. If we get that, and then lose because the team on the otherside just flat out out played us, I'd be satisfied. Disappointed sure, but at least I'd be able to hold my head up and say I'm a bomber fan. Last year was disgusting and I never want to see a year like that again.

A team playing its first game worries me, because I expect them to come out as fired up as they'll be all year.

That said, I love how prepared and disciplined O'Shea's Bombers were last week.  I don't think O'Shea is the type that tolerates complacency, and expect a really high compete level out of Winnipeg.  Think it'll be higher scoring because I don't think Ottawa's going to be able to play great defence with their poor NI situation.

It was typical CFL football for me. It's what I say all the time about it - I still love the game though. Don't forget, the NFL has what, a 2 month training camp. They bring in the wanna be's about two weeks before the regulars and work them out hard - then decide who's good enough to go to the main camp, they they have another two weeks of camp I think before their first pre-season game, then they play four (five if you're in the hall of fame game) so by game one the team is pretty much in mid-season form. But, when your league makes BILLIONS of dollars, you can do that.

I'd like to see the CFL in a middle ground. I've always wanted THREE preseason games, with one extra week of TC - that extra game should be held in a non-traditional market. For instance, next year the Eskimos will be playing a pre-season game in a newly built stadium in Fort McMurray. To me, this is a great idea, and should be explored for everyone
WPG could play in Brandon, Sask could play one in Saskatoon B.C one in the interior, etc. Switch it out every year in terms of what side of the country it's played in, then maybe for week one of the season we'd see some decent football

Winnipeg and Saskatchewan were the two best teams, Edmonton and Calgary were ok, B.C. wasn't bad, the rest stunk.

I agree there were some sloppy games this past weekend. But don't all teams get the same amount of time to prepare? Why did some teams look prepared and others not so much? Says more about the coaching staffs than the league in general.

Brandon, you know they sold over 30k tickets for the game. You know a lot of people come from out of town to attend the game. Can't exactly get to the game if the hwy you're travelling on is closed. Though I'm sure what you're saying in tongue in cheek. At least, I hope it is.

KptKrunch reacted to Mr. Perfect in Running Tally - Collaros vs. Willy
The thing about Willy is that even with lots of time provided by our line, the ball in most cases was out pretty quick. Collaros on the other hand seemed (can't say for sure since you aren't him of course) to fail at making his pre snap reads when Sask was sending pressure. Ontop of that he held on to the ball way too long which magnified the problems. Had he gotten the ball out quickly like Willy, that at least would have made the problems seem not as bad.

All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the game against the Riders ends up being his worst of the season. While I'm not a Collaros fan he is better than what he showed today. The rain didn't help things (Durant's numbers were far from great as well). Collaros can make plays and he will perform better than he showed today, but in my opinion, Willy is and always has been the better quarterback.

The mechanics you could turn into a novel on Collaros. There are a lot of flaws there. In a way his mechanics remind me of Byron Leftwich. For those that recall Leftwich had a solid career at Marshall and his mechanical flaws were in large part over looked because he had a solid line in front of him at the school. Leftwich had a long wind up delivery that took much longer in terms of releasing the ball and getting it to its target than the average QB. Leftwich played behind poor offensive lines in the pros and DB's always jumped his passes because they are obviously much more skilled in the NFL.

The same thing to a degree plagues Collaros. His wind up and delivery takes a long time so that, coupled with hanging onto the ball too long and playing behind a much weaker O-Line than in Toronto, his play will continue to result in more sacks. The Rider DB's were also very good at jumping passes tonight. He gets happy feet against the blitz and really needs a coach that will help him remain focused on his fundamentals and settle down the happy feet under pressure.

What a putrid game that was from every aspect.
Horrible conditions, tons of penalties, no way to determine if Sask. has any kind of team, as we have nothing to base it on.
Can Hamilton really be that bad?
Where's that vaunted Nat. def line and strong LB crew?
Lucky for them it's early and they'll get better. They will get better…right?

I mean I'd hurl insults at them but that wouldn't be fair, because they have no way of blocking them.

*Collaros gets a pass for now, as he had no help, but I do see the advantage of having Willy.

Or out of pure hubris, the mistakes aren't admitted and instead we play inferior players instead of those who deserve to be on the field.  No GM is perfect. I'm not ecstatic about the mistake but I am happy they are moving on quickly. Let those who have never made an error in judgment cast the first stone.

I find too many people here dump on January. You guys forget that the Oline needs to work as a UNIT - and with all the players coming and going the last few years here, with January being the only 'stable' lineman, he's an easy target to pick on. The guy is a multi time all star. Trust me - he's good. He had a solid game yesterday and you can bet that will only continue. Looks like we got a great pair of bookends with January and Knapp, and Neufeld in there with Greaves and Morley the centre, looks to me like our Oline is pretty solid - as solid as it's ever been in the past 10 years i would say. January never was the problem here, just the whipping boy.

To those who want objectivity, here are some defensive stats by rank in the league from two seasons:
    Season 1:
1st in fewest 1st downs allowed
    1st in total yards against
    3rd in rushing yards against
    1st in passing yards against
1st in yards allowed per pass
    1st in fewest passes against
    1st in interceptions
    3rd in points allowed
    1st in sacks

    Season 2:
    6th in yards allowed
    6th in rushing yards allowed
8th in yards allowed per pass
6th in yards passing allowed (with fewest pass attempts against)
    8th in interceptions
    7th in points allowed
    8th in passing tds allowed
(and to show that I'm not just cherry picking all of the worst stats, 1st in yards allowed per rush, 4th in % completed passing, 3rd in passing 1st downs allowed)

As I'm sure you can tell where this is going, Season 1 is Bombers 2011 season, Season 2 is Bombers 2012 season. Both with Burke as D-coordinator and pretty much the same starting defence! So, either all of the players got worse, Burke lost it as a coordinator, or most likely, both. He can't complain about the players there. But he sure complained about the offence and how he didn't know much about offence as a head coach, but never addressed why the defence all of a sudden took a huge downturn, even though that's his supposed area of expertise. Add in the fact that his defences and team (when HC) have been completely undisciplined, then, yes, we can say that he is not necessarily a good d coordinator anymore. Do I expect the Argos to play like that the whole season? No. Do I expect them to be good? Based on the last couple of years of Burke's D, no.

As for continuing to "pick" on him, well, since last year was one of the worst Bombers seasons in history, and since I had way more fun last night than I had during ANY game last year (I went to every home game last year), and since he opened his mouth again this week and didn't take any responsibility for the atrocity that was last year, then as fans, we have every right to complain about him and that he is one of the, if not the worst coaches in our team's history.

Rant over (even though I know this was directed at only a couple of people)

And just comparing what I've seen on the sidelines from Burke last year and O'shea last night... it's really night and day
While Burke was just staring on the field with the blank face... O'shea is constantly communicating with his assistants... pumping up his guys... and giving tap on their backs... that's a head coach you wanna play for...

I felt kinda bad for him (not really). Problem here though wasn't the 'scheme', but the execution (not player execution). He's got  a lot of new players there and no one expected much (especially Burke). But......... TONE TONE TONE. Remember last year, on Our Bombers - I freaked first on the two loser QB's we brought in, then I freaked on our exhibition games. I mean, first game we went over half field what, three times? Getting ONE field goal - against backups and training camp fodder. Then the following week, before the game the exulted (eh unknown poster) Tim Burke boasts to the media how in the Hamilton game we'll be whipped. 52 to 0 in an exhibition match is a joke. Nice tone to set sir!

So lets fast forward to this year - what was/has/is Mike O'Shea saying? Any concerns? NO . Who's starting? THEY'RE ALL STARTERS. What's keeping you up at night? NOTHING
    Tim Burke
"Our defense is a work in progress?"

Tell me - who would you go to the wall for? Who inspires confidence in you? So yes, a lot of new players. Bombers have a lot of new players. The coach (and coordinators) are paid to 'lead' them. Burke leads his players to the bus, and puts them under it. And that's what we saw tonight - a defense who didn't believe in themselves because their coach doesn't. You need to remember people, the guys you see on the field - they have been playing ball all their lives. These aren't guys off the street. They need organisation and leadership first and foremost. If they don't have that - they don't stand a chance no matter how talented they are.

On the flip side, we saw a confident group of Bomber players who even when something bad happened (like the Willy INT) they bounced right back.

So Tim Burke, you got exactly what you deserved tonight, just like you got exactly what you deserved last year.
