Problem there is the entire district is below 80. Well below

Gonna be honest... eventually the southern district will run out of people

Thats because alot of the  district is being dragged down by extremely low numbers in particular areas. The problem is Stanley in particular and Winkler somewhat will not get vaccinated , EVER. No matter what. This isn't a temporary shutdown. There is no way it is right to shutdown Portage or even Morden ( which is surrounded by Stanley ) permanently when they are not the problem. It would be about the same as shutting down Winnipeg because Winkler isn't vaxed. They are separate Cities that happen to be in the same district. I'm pretty sure no one from Portage is traveling to Winkler. Hit the problem areas within the district might work. But whatever is done it can't be geared to  asking/ forcing/convincing/ getting those idiots to get vaxed. It's not going to happen.

    It's damn frustrating

  2. On shutting down Southern Health

It would make way more sense to shutdown the problem areas. You shut down Stanley RM and Winkler. And any other RM that is really lagging. It's no harder than shutting down a complete health district. You could do if by vaccination rate. Any City or RM below a particular rate. There are entire RMs/towns/ Cities with good vaccination rates that have little to no contact with Winkler/ Stanley. If you have 1 poorly vaxed reserve in the North it shouldn't be right to shut down the entire Northern health district. Or to shut down Winnipeg health if say the North end had poor rates.

best floyd album is piper at the gates of dawn.  or saucer full of secrets.  probly before your time. young sprout.

    it was downhill after syd.

Remember Ummagammum ?  With the longest song title ever - "Several species of small furry animals gathered togeather in a cave and grooving with a Pict "

Losing Syd ( from the band ) definatly impacted the band and it's music and was an inspiration for multiple songs.

    Re: fringes of parties....

I heard a really interesting bit from Naheed Nenshi on CTV the other day, and he was talking about the PPC being a fringe party not only for the far right, but also the far left. Basically, things are like a circle, and the far edges of the left and right will eventually meet. What that meant for the PPC, was weird anti-vax hippies on the left who believe in "alternative medicine" and are completely against traditional science.....those people on the far left, eventually met up with the crazy far-right conspiracy theory types over their mutual hatred of the middle.

This is true. A  "real " libertarian should be pro women's choice ( and rights ), pro LGBQT rights, and support many other  issues that progressives support. Unfortunately  most Libertarians support only the individual rights that they are effected by and the rest don't count. So in reality most self proclaimed Libertarians are just far right. I use to tell my son in-laws if you walk far enough left you might meet the right. Doesn't always work out though

Winnipeg wins this round, despite Winkler's valiant effort. MOP is Monstrosity Burger for going full wackjob. Congratulations on a terrible name and terrible polices!

There was an interview with the head of the restaurant association on CJOB. He fully supports the hammer being dropped on Monstosity Burger.  He said all restaurants are working hard to follow the rules and earn the trust of both the public and the government/ health officials and places like that set them back and work against what they are doing. It was good to hear his support.

People are people no matter what era.   There are always going to be those that question and not believe.   While disappointing, this really isn't anything new.  It is unfortunately human nature.

I  not so sure. I don't remember 1 kid who didn't get the polio vaccine and boosters or any discussion about it. Mind you it was a very small school and a small community so I'm sure there were some somewhere. But I don't think it would have been a there close to what we see today.

Edit : lol I know I switched epidemics

it'd be really interesting to see what Canada would look like if we had a 2 party system like the States.... Progressives vs Conservatives.

Please no. Canada's willingness to create and support new parties plays an important part in our political makeup. The NDP born of a disgruntled, suffering  farmers party has made massive contributions to our social systems including Universal healthcare. Even today the PPC may have bled off votes from the Consevatives but it also bled off a bunch of further right supporters, ideals and candidates. The threat of NDP support forces  the Liberals to adopt policies from the left.  Two parties ? No thank you.

Watched Fahrenheit  11/9 last night as I felt up to diving into that for some reason. Going in I thought it would be a slam on Trump, but I came away with a much better understanding of the role the Dems played in creating the cesspool.  From the dirty politics behind the scenes, "compromising", screwing Sanders for Clinton, unaccepting of AOC and her like, creating apathy among voters, and being just as betrothed to big $$$, if not more.

Have a listen to Chris Hedges ( or read ) as a suggestion on that subject.

it is also shocking that there seems to be little will to do anything to Trump. so far, next to nothing.

    very hard to understand that.

even if he can slip and slide and cheat his way out of consequences, at least make a full blast attempt to bring him to justice.

American system ......seems to be thoroughly corrupted. all they have is bernie, aoc, a few others, fighting decades of it.

As much as Democratic leaders and  half  of Americans hate Trump what they really fear and panic over is Bernie Sanders. When he was making a real push to lead the Democrats big money came in to squash that. And that's on the Democratic Party. They set the stage for Trump. Lifetimes of fear mongering of socialist ideas (that the rest if the world has adopted as standard practice and human decency ) have brainwashed Americans. Alot of it is not accidental.

The only path to power for the CPC is to compete for and win the centrist vote. Same holds true for the Liberals. Too far left or right of the political spectrum wins you nothing. The CPC needs to do a deep dive into the GTA and try change them from red to blue. The Liberals need to move to the centre as well. Nik Nanos did a nice report about this on youtube. He said his polling shows that in order to win a majority in Canada the fight is not for the progressive vote, it is for the centrist vote.

Agreed. The only way to power for the CPC  is to compete for the center, especially on social matters. I believe we are in for a pretty rough ride fiscally .  There is going to be a draw at some point to a more fiscally responsible government. The CPC can probably cash in  on that  but only if they can appeal or at least appear to be centralist on more social matters. I'm not saying a CPC government will be, or would have been more  fiscally responsible .I'm just saying they are seen as that especially in harder economic times.

Why legal experts are so disturbed by a Trump lawyer's 6-point plan to overturn the 2020 election

A new CNN report on Monday revealed a memo from a lawyer working with former President Donald Trump that detailed a plan to overturn his loss to Joe Biden on Jan. 6. The report reveals findings from the new book, "Peril," by reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.

It included a copy of the memo from conservative law professor John Eastman, showing a six-point plan to leverage then-Vice President Mike Pence's role as the president of the Senate to control Congress's vote counting and throw out the votes of seven states.

This would leave Trump in the lead with 232 Electoral College votes over Biden's 228. Then, according to Eastman, Democrats would let out "howls." (The whole memo shows open contempt for Democrats.) But if they object, he argued, Pence could declare the election inconclusive, at which point it would move into the House. And because Republicans control a majority of the House delegations, they could select Trump to carry out a second term.

"The main thing here is that Pence should do this without asking for permission – either from a vote of the joint session [of Congress] or from the Court," the memo said. "The fact is that the Constitution assigns this power to the Vice President as the ultimate arbiter. We should take all of our actions with that in mind."

Pence, of course, ultimately disagreed with these arguments and refused Trump's pleas to carry out the plan. And despite the insurrection carried out by Trump's followers on the Capitol that day, Pence fulfilled his role as expected, and Congress counted all the Electoral Votes as they were actually awarded, affirming Biden as the winner.

But even though the plan failed, the document remains a disturbing record of the time. It's impossible to know what would have happened if Pence had tried to go along with the plan — there might've been outrage and chaos in the streets, just as there were outbursts of celebration when Biden was declared the winner in November 2020. But if the vice president could just throw out the votes of states he didn't like, it would indisputably be the end of democracy in the United States.

Many legal experts found the document chilling, deeply disturbing, and absurd.

"This 'plan' is laughable, but we shouldn't laugh," said conservative lawyer David French. "If carried out, it would have led to the country's greatest political crisis since April 1861. And Eastman was no mere internet crank. He was a law professor and close to POTUS in the final days."

Steve Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas, agreed: "This memo is horrifying. As is the fact that it was written by a (former) law professor. As is the reporting that Pence agonized over the matter. As is so much else about how close we came to a coup (fine — an autogolpe) on 1/6. As is how little we're doing to respond to it."

Asha Rangappa, who teaches at Yale Law School, called the memo a "sinister plan" that would let "Trump to unconstitutionally grab and hold on to power." She added: "Note, by the way, that he's pretty confident the R's would go along with it until the end."

It's really shocking that Mike Pence of all people may have saved the USA's democracy ........even if it is temporary......And even if it isn't a real democracy..........sh#t , never mind.

This raises a question... if the kids are all masked and regularly washing their hands (which I understand is the expectation), how is anything being spread?

The best thing I heard from an infectious disease expert was  " there is no safe, only safer " All the protocols, masks, distancing,  vaccines will reduce transmission, lower the overload on hospitals and reduce the severity of the disease if you get it. They can't eliminate it %100.

  16.  " that if someone chooses to trust their immune system over the vaccine, then they are still welcome."

    So by that logic

" I just broke both my legs but I choose to trust my body's natural abilty to heal without a cast "

" I've got a painful cavity .I don't need a dentist because I trust my body will heal it "

" I've got a bad case of VD but my body's immune system will cure it and everyone else that I infect "

The stupidity of these people is still shocking . Way to go Manitoba government, health officials and enforcement officials for hitting these heartless bastards in the only way they feel it . Their pockets.

  17. Thoughts :

    - Neither Trudeau, O'Toole,  or Singh were able to make any real headway in convincing Canadians they should lead the country.

    - The Liberals again win the most seats but lose the popular vote

    - The PPC were pretty much a non factor except in one riding in Atlantic  Canada where they may have changed the out come. It's still disturbing that not far off 1 million people voted for them. Bernier is left peeking in  the windows of the house which is a good thing.

    - 8700 people chose to support the PPC , placing them 2nd in Portage Lisgar, ( my riding ) which is embarassing.

    - Trudeau says he now has a clear mandate............um, okay. He never was good with numbers

    - A pointless election, called during the 4th wave, that no one wanted. Basicly the electorate has said " F### off , leave it alone and get back to work " to all the parties.
